Uh, no?

Having owned every black puck Apple TV, a Nexus Player, and two Nvidia Shields, unless you're slinging games from your GeForce-equipped PC, the Apple TV is the best box there is. As for the built-in menus on TVs, they're turds. Slow, don't deliver 4K (and I'd wager HDR is out of the question as well), and they just have bad GUIs.

His point is the world has moved beyond boxes and these apps are built into the TV. Like he said, if apple wants to push into the market they’re going to have to do platform agnostic with their content. I’d use them if I had an app on my LG, or on my non smart TVs that have a Roku (the legit best box btw). Unless you are an apple devotee why would anyone lock themselves into their content platform?

Sounds like an app update is in the works/delayed.

I don't think so, they already have two other series that work the same way, Minecraft and Puss in Boots, I haven't tried those on my AppleTV, but they should all work the same since they're all interactive stories.

Is the Apple TV not supported because it doesn't have the latest version of the Netflix app running on it ?

Does anyone know if the Roku is supported ?

That sounds shady af. Genuinely creepy like some kind of research project. Sometimes I wonder if the new Face ID iPhones scan and read your face while you’re watching something and records your reaction to be used as a form of data for research or some kind of development program.
To what end? I don’t know.

But I also kinda like the idea. It’s like they thought of a reason to get people to use a device in conjunction with the HomePod for their home theatre experience.

But, the only time I would wanna watch something particularly such as this episode or show would be at home on the home tv but I’m old fashioned that way.
Maybe the target audience mainly watches on devices now. Per viewer demographic.

Eh sounds fun. I’m game.

Does airplay from iOS to Apple TV work?

edit: it does not. Shows the opening then goes to a spinning wheel.
And if you start the stream on iOS, and try to mirror later you get no visuals (at least when I tried).

yeah doesnt work. No way to get this on a TV from iOS/Mac that I can see.
Surely an HDMI cable (with the necessary dongles, if need be) would be sufficient?

Not surprised. Apple TV is dead unless they integrate it into A TV set soon. Google have this sector nailed and it’s the only thing android I have in my house.

The vast majority of people don’t “upgrade” their TVs every few years. Apple probably doesn’t want to be stuck maintaining its software for very old televisions.

Google - as well as most television manufacturers - doesn’t seem to have a problem choosing to drop support for devices after two or three years.

This sounds like an episode of...Black Mirror. lol

I just tested it with my Roku and it works. No problem for me, I have both Apple TV and Roku, though I have been using the Apple TV more since the remote also turns the tv on and off and lets me adjust the volume. Roku doesn't do that (besides, I lost the remote to it and have to use the app on my phone). I'm good either way. Wish Netflix would update their Apple TV app thought....

Every streaming app I want to use is available on the platform. What exactly is Apple locking people into if you own mostly Apple devices it’s the best choice for tv consumption

Originally Brought an Apple TV for Netflix, then when I upgraded to a 4K tv, Id have to buy another, newer, Apple TV. Why would I do that when the TV comes bundled with 4K Netflix through google?

It’s dead as a hardware box.

Yeah, it's better to have an underpowered and horribly designed "box" integrated with your $1,000+ television that will be obsolete in a few years vs. an advanced, well-designed external box that can be upgraded separately from your TV for ~$100.

The Roku UI is complete trash. Like it's really, really, inarguably bad. The hardware is pretty poor as well. The only thing arguably "best" about Roku is that they have the most services.

Meh, looks crappy anyway. “OMG WHAT if video games were real guize?? What if in you die in the game, you DIE IN REAL LIFE OMAIGAA!!”
Hmm, I guess that they’ve never heard of a movie called ‘Tron’....
Or maybe they have....

Android smart TV’s are total turds with horrible GUI’s, slow GUI’s, and a bovine excrement UX. Let’s not even get started on their insanely invasive data harvesting for ad targeting, non-existent security, and piss-poor support. My work just bought a top-of-the-line Sony Bravia 4K 80” smart TV for the conference room, and it’s the WORST POS I have EVER used! Insanely slow and laggy UI, doesn’t remember custom colour settings whenever you switch HDMI ports, and has frozen twice!

At least LG TV’s use Web OS, which is much nicer than that turd Android, but even those I still don’t trust. If I am ever forced to get a Smart TV because my current non-Smart TV bites the dust, I am NEVER connecting it to the network, and using my Apple TV 4K with it, and NOTHING else.

The world has “moved on” because they’ve been brainwashed by marketing hyperspeak to make people think Smart TV’s are the end-all and be-all of everything they may need, without realizing just how invasive these devices are, harvesting vast amounts of your data and sending that off to third-parties, often without your knowledge and consent, and as with some major OEM’s of these turds, if you do not consent to the data harvesting, the TV will simply refuse to function.

I’ve stopped MANY people from getting one of these monstrosities, or at the very least convinced them NOT to connect it to any home network and use it offline, as it’s safer and less invasive to use them like this, in conjunction with an Apple TV.

This to me seems like an intentional design and artistic decision considering ‘black mirror’ refers to the reflective surface of a phone screen. So it would only make sense to make it available predominantly on mobile.

No, ‘Black mirror' refers to a television, as clearly stated by Brooker.

It’s funny how many come over and ask if I have a “smart tv”. Or when they are shopping for a tv and want a smart tv. I wouldn’t ever give up my appletv’s. I love the interface and I have sideloaded some apps. I can’t live without airplay either.
Seems like most normal people are ok with the crappy tv’s apps because they kinda work People don’t seem to care how things look or work I guess.
