By the way, a friend at an AT&T store said that if you go above 5GB a month (no matter how), you'll get a stern warning, and then if done again, a huge bill or cut off. What happened to unlimited data use?????
It's not unlimited, it is "unlimited" which means that you can go a little bit past 5GB once in a while but if you use several GBs over in a month or consistently go over, they might cut you off or bill you.

Cellular data is on a finite shared network going through the same towers as the voice calls even if they are on different network layers. If everyone started using like crazy, the whole network could crash including the voice calls layer.

Also, I'd like to point out that even though I have a 6GB plan, I have only used about 70MB so far after having my iPhone 3G since July 11th.

Testing it now but it does seem to be working I'm posting on my Macbook Air right now tethered to my iPhone 3G. If AT&T let's this go then I can finally ditch my laptop connect card when I travel.
*
I've already done that...cancelled my Verizon today...the tethering works like a charm:D

Depends what laptop you are using. If you were using a macbook the battery is not powerful enough to power the notebook and your iphone at the same time, unless the notebook is plugged to the wall outlet. If you are using a macbook pro you should not have any problems since the batteries are more powerful.

I'd rather plug it to a wall if I'm going to be connected for awhile

Amazing, all the twits here, who immediately jump to defend Apple, no matter how it tries to screw us!

Either a lot of brainless posters, or minimum wage PR agency twits, hired by Apple/AT&T to make sure the sheep don't get too restless.

Phew! I think I'll wait on the new g3 iPhone.

And how, exactly, is Apple trying to screw you at the moment?

AT&T is the one prohibiting tethering on their data plan. You think Apple gives a crap? They're bound to their agreements just like anyone else, though. If AT&T says no, it's gone for the US store.

I bought it earlier today after just resyncing with itunes netshare is no longer there or in itunes as one of my apps looks like apple took it from me i dont know what is going on i had it working fine for me earlier tonight

I synced earlier today without any issues. Still there. I live in New Orleans so when the next big storm comes this proggy will be great to have.

As they should. AT&T is not providing a $30/mo. wireless data plan for tethering. If you choose to tether, esp. if you choose to tether and be a bandwidth hog, you could get nailed with a large bill or cut off.

I don't want my Safari to crawl because a bunch of nitwits with Netshare are downloading DVDs onto their laptops and bringing the network to its knees.

Maybe AT&T should upgrade their networks if they can't handle people using them...

I have to agree - I've had an ATT laptop connect aircard for 6 months, it also has the 5GB limit. I use it A LOT, 7 days a week, for general web surfing, email, etc. I've never had any problems with the 5gb limit. Not even sure if I hit that, but if I have, I've heard nothing from ATT about it.

Just as long as you're not doing something foolish like downloading off bittorrent all day long, etc. - you should be fine, don't worry about it.
Bit unfortunately some users think it is their God-given right and destiny to do such things, which is the reasons why AT&T has these limitations in the contact to begin with.

It saddens me how many on these forums demand to have tethering (which is specifically prohibited in the contract they signed) and then call AT&T / Apple "theives", "scum", or whatever if they actually try to enforce the contract.

I do fully agree with what you're saying.

However, I think the contentious point for me is how Apple/whichever carrier sells the iPhone contract as an 'Unlimited' data plan. Sure they have caveats in the small print, but isn't this vagrant case of false advertising?

If the limit is 5GB, cut the crap - we're all computer literate - sell it as 5GB. With that clear from the outset, who cares how people use their allotted bandwidth?

Because if I'm looking to sign a new contract and I see Verizon with an unlimited data plan and AT&T with a 5GB data plan, guess which one I'm going for? Think of AT&T as a buffet owner--if a customer kept coming in for lunch everyday and cleaning you out for $5.99, you'd eventually ask the customer not to come back. From what I understand, AT&T works the same way by just letting you out of your contract. If you're going to be a heavy user, you're just not worth it to them.

I couldn't care less about tethering. It's SOCK5...barely useful at best. What's really irking me is that the app is just yanked out of the app store, end of story. What's next? Maybe AT&T/Apple doesn't like how much data your email app uses, so they yank it? Maybe you pissed off some 2nd level dev at Apple so your app doesn't get approved? Seems like AT&T/Apple can pretty much do whatever they want for any reason...or no reason at all...and who's going to do anything about it? Anything at all. If they yanked my app, I don't even know who I'd ask about it. Meanwhile, every two-bit fanass would be telling the rest of the world it was all my fault because Jesus runs Apple and Jesus never does anything wrong. When you look up the word "bullsh*t" in the dictionary, this is one of the definitions.

It may not be Apple's fault, but I fully agree that this kind of censorship and control is bad news for those that want the iPhone to be all it can be. Then again Apple might want this reaction so that they can go to the providers and say look the public are demanding tethering we have to give it to them.

yeah, well, welcome to apple.

i'm not saying it's right, but that's the way it is. total control with zero accountability.

Has it occurred to you that most of AT&T's phones can tether, the iPhone is specially disadvantaged, and your network will slow down equally if your neighbour is using a Tilt or Blackberry Bold to download DVD's?

Its always especially amusing when iPhone users imagine they are the first of everything, when they are the last. I see these kind of bizarre excuses all the time.

Yeh, it would also be naive to expect that AT&T wouldn't manage traffic within their 3G network, throttling P2P protocols/bittorrent to ensure there is sufficient bandwidth for legitimate service. As you've already said, what strikes me as being especially bizarre is that the iPhone is specifically disadvantaged. I guess they've identified the iPhone as a handset more popular with non-business users who are more likely to be using it for high-bandwidth, low latency connections but it's still strange that they can just say flat-out, no tethering when every other device doesn't have this restriction.
