Its always especially amusing when iPhone users imagine they are the first of everything, when they are the last. I see these kind of bizarre excuses all the time.

About the 5G limit...

Please correct me if my math is wrong, but for those worrying about the 5G limit, my quick calculation is:

5G = approx 5 Billion bytes x 8 bits per byte = 40 Billion bits

Assuming a average download speed of 500 kbs:
num of seconds of usage = 40 x 10^9 / 5 x 10^5 = 80,000 secs
80,000 secs = 1,333 minutes = 22.22 hours

If my math is correct you would have 22.22 hours of constant 500k conectivity to use, which is about 1hr per day per standard work week.

Did i get this right?

Thanks,
H

What I find odd is that the iPhone is specifically being gimped not to use the entire 3G capabilities for speed.

In the exact same spot I do a download test with the iPhone and with Netshare.

My computer gets more than double the speed that the phone on iPhonespeedtest.com.

Wassup with that?

Because if I'm looking to sign a new contract and I see Verizon with an unlimited data plan and AT&T with a 5GB data plan, guess which one I'm going for? Think of AT&T as a buffet owner--if a customer kept coming in for lunch everyday and cleaning you out for $5.99, you'd eventually ask the customer not to come back. From what I understand, AT&T works the same way by just letting you out of your contract. If you're going to be a heavy user, you're just not worth it to them.

That is a great analogy. Verizon can get away with offering an unlimited plan because:
1. Their user base is smaller
2. Since they use CDMA, they don't have to cater to roaming customers from other countries.
3. Most of their phones are so crippled with crappy browser or WAP only and crappy email so it is almost impossible for someone to use the data heavily.
4. They most likely get kickbacks from TV stations for carrying their "TV" service which offset the heavy data use and hardly anyone uses that feature after the initial honeymoon period.
5. Their costs are lower since their coverage area is smaller.

1. By around 10% only.

2. roaming customers do not use a lot of data, due to the huge cost of roaming.

3. the browser is irrelevant, as data using by browsing will never get close to 5 GB.

4. And AT&T does not?

5. EVDO coverage far outstrips AT&T 3G HSDPA coverage.

The fact is that Verizon has much more 3G EVDO phones (the Centro is 3G on Verizon, but edge on Sprint, same for Blackberry Curve) and much wider coverage.

No network offers real unlimited data, but that does not explain this fiasco.

I sure hope Apple re-posts the app. And in response to a post about battery draining quicker than a 12 oz. beer at a frat party (my analogy), future versions of this app will hopefully integrate speed throttling so you can just use a smaller amount of bandwidth and maybe not eat up the battery by using two radios simultaneously so much.

Hi hater! no one here says its the first. thats an opinionated comment thats only valid in your own mind.

Maybe the phone can't process as fast as a computer?? My Windows Mobile is the same way.

The phone's not gimped, computers are just muuuuch faster than phones.

try resetting safari

This is aggrivating.. I can't get mine to work!! I've followed the instruction to a T! Has anybody else been having problems?

I couldn't get it to work until I reset all the safari settings other than "close all web pages/windows. Hope this helps.

Apple has the right to pull of the application, however is there a way for Null River to release this outside the Apple store? Can it be purchased directly from Null River?

Depends what laptop you are using. If you were using a macbook the battery is not powerful enough to power the notebook and your iphone at the same time, unless the notebook is plugged to the wall outlet. If you are using a macbook pro you should not have any problems since the batteries are more powerful.

I have a Macbook Pro and I also have the charging problem. I think that if a battery can power a MacBook, it should have more than enough power to power an iPhone. I think the real issue is the power specifications of the USB port itself.

If Apple does not put Netshare back on the store then all of you really just wasted $10 because I'm almost sure when Apple does firmware updates that most of the apps will have to be updated as well to continue the use of it. Now that Apple knows that there are users with this app on their phone then the 2.1 update will have something written in it to bock the app from working. And last, this is a phone, not a network card. I don't see why the iPhone isn't enough for some people. It basically let's you check ur email, surf the web, you tube etc. Why do u need to tether the phone to ur laptop? I just don't get it. This is just sad.

???
How do you know Apple will block an app that they initially released to the public? If anything they'll release an apology letter (assuming it's pulled for good) and reissue all purchasers a refund (at least)

The iPhone is not a laptop replacement. The iPhone 3G plans all include the ability to tether (part of the AT&T data plan), just because it's pulled doesn't mean it's against any agreements Apple and AT&T had. I don't get people like you who feel like they need to babysit everyone else.

The iPhone isn't enough for some people, sometimes people need to do business on their laptops, things the iPhone can't do. Upload an excel spread sheet or Word document to your employer while you're stuck in the airport in a snow storm?

How is tethering sad?

to macsterling

My reason to tether is that I need to use a kind of USB smart card reader connected to a PC on the go, for a few minutes a few times a week. I plan to buy a netbook (eeepc style) for this usage.
Now I pay for DSL at home, I pay for DSL at my small office, and I have an iPhone plan. I simply don't want to buy another separate mobile data plan for such usage.
I certainly don't want to push the meaning of "unlimited" of my iphone plan to replace my home DSL plan.

I guess everyone interested in tethering has a good reason for it.

maybe cos the screen isn't big enough ? And why is it "sad" :(

excuse me sad? why not use something to the fullest capabilities, how is that sad? when it comes to tech, u push it to the extreme, try to get everything out of it (as long as it doesn't hurt anyone), it's sad that you think the way you do:cool:

Questionable answer

Call them back and get that on recording. You may need it to fight the charges "IF" they end up doing anything.

All I can say is don't exceed the 5GB a month "unlimited" plan. My buddy at AT&T said that while you are technically correct, in that, you can't be charged, if you far exceed the limit and get a warning and still do so, it's heavy charges or bye-bye time. I've never jail broke my first iPhone, or my new one, but if AT&T continues to treat us like prisoners, maybe it will be the catalyst to do so!
