the rose is: makes me love my iPad Mini 6 even more.

but the thorn: leaving performance on the table for the sake of product differentiation, rather than differentiating with compelling price points. I could be more forgiving of such a corner cut if this replaced the old iPad at $329. but even with inflation, at a new $449 tier it’s a bit of a shame.

sure many users wouldn’t notice the difference, just like many people wouldn’t care how well the back of a cabinet is finished. Apple is supposed to be the company that takes pride in finishing even the back, because it’s the right thing to do.

Are they compromising though? At all? I can't see it.

They have added more convenient USBC port. They have vastly updated the shell to be more inline with modern iPad design, no bezels, new colours etc. They have revamped and moved the camera to a better position. Touch ID built into the side/top button. They have even made a special keyboard attachment for it.

It's not compromised save a couple of extremely minor things, a slow data transfer rate - which is really not the target buyers main concern (and hasn't been downgraded from the previous model either), and they have made it so its compatible with pencil 1, and again - the target buyer is just as likely a first time buyer as they are a base model upgrader. The upgrader doesn't need a new pencil. The first time buyer gets a cheaper pencil option.

Talk about blowing everything out of proportion. And you're supposed to be logical.
Still using a non-laminated, non antireflective display, still using Apple Pencil 1 that requires a dongle to function, even if you are upgrading iPads and already have an Apple Pencil, you still have to make an additional purchase for the dongle. It has a previous generation processor and they moved the smart connector to make it incompatible with the Smart Keyboard so they could sell you a new model specifically for the 10th generation iPad, wouldn't want you to be able to get a cheaper one second hand. AND the slow data transfer speeds all at a higher price point. They cut corners to bring that more modern design and still raised the price. They couldn't even add dual-band WiFi to the thing.

Not necessarily. Despite having a 1.7Gbps theoretical backhaul, the most I get is about 500Mbps between Wi-Fi nodes. Orbi or perhaps the wifi5 standard seems to cap the transfer rate, although I believe it allows 3 devices to transfer at 500Mbps each simultaneously.

I find it very annoying, it’s not what I paid for.

Anyway, I wouldn’t like to depend on Wi-Fi sync.
I agree, I was just explaining how slow USB 2.0 is, not how fast Wifi is. And 500Mbps is still faster than the theoretical maximum of USB 2.0. :)

This is why the number of SKUs matter: more SKUs, more confusing "differentiation." Arguably the most expensive gets everything. Then it is a crapshoot of trade-offs below that. The only places where this confusion does not exist is for the most expensive and the cheapest: the choice then becomes one of get everything or get the minimum.
holding the charging port hostage is the most apple move out there. This is as bad as gimping the base model MacBook air/pro with the SSD that is slower than the base model they were replacing. Nothing more than greed on apple's part. I get screen, battery, and to an extent the camera, but there is 0 excuse (and you cannot convince me otherwise) that the charging port needs to be slower.

Product segmentation exists even if you don’t want to be convinced.

But hey, at least aside from one iPad we all know Lightning maxes out at garbage USB 2.0 speeds. Yipee… 🙄
The 1st gen iPP 12.9 inch from 2015 got lighting port with 16 pins (instead of 8). That made it 5Gbps. With that change they also introduced the SD Card Reader 'USB 3.0 5Gbps' which made a lot of photographers happy.
https://photojoseph.com/tips/2015/1...g-sd-card-camera-reader-usb-3-speeds-ipad-pro

The 9.7 inch from 2016 had 8-pin Lighting, which made it 480Mbps. The 10.5 inch model in 2017 got the 16-pin lighting, so that was 5Gbps.

Apple probably figures that most people using this iPad don’t need the speed.

Hopefully the iPhone 15 at least comes with true USB-C speeds and the Pros support thunderbolt.

USB type C is a connector specification and has no inherent "speed"

You may certainly hope for USB3 level speeds to arrive along with a USB type C connector, but there's no particularly reason Apple couldn't do USB2 if they felt they had reason to do so.

Good point and that's what I meant - was just too lazy to type that out 😀. Though even now USB3 is old and they've moved onto 4 or whatever confusing version number. The USB spec the the USB-C connector have been confusing as you can get since USB3 originally came out.

At least have USB 3.0, that would be fine. This is not a major selling point, but still embarrassing for the price increase in the 10th gen. Cheap desktop PCs I assembled in 2013 had USB 3.0. USB headers and controllers are cheap enough.
