Uggg. probably a lost sale from me. Esp if the new imacs "pros" do not show up till sept. I love this keyboard so much but at over 2K$ for the new ipad pro i would get, + a new keyboard. will have to pass. can't justify it with owning a similar one right now.
The only issue Apple is talking about is when closing the keyboard, and even then it might not lay perfectly flat. I bet you can use your existing keyboard with the new 13" Pro, until you sell it.

According to Apple themselves, it will work: "iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd, 4th, or 5th generation)" (Soruce: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MJQL3LL/A/magic-keyboard-for-ipad-pro-129‑inch-5th-generation-us-english)
The NEW one WILL work with the NEW iPad Pro 12.9 AND the older 2020 and 2018 models, but the OLD Magic Keyboard does NOT work with the 2021 iPad, which is why everyone who already has one and is considering upgrading to the new iPad Pro is upset that they'll have to ALSO buy a new Magic Keyboard.

The ENTIRE point of the Magic Keyboard is to be able to take it with you anywhere, and being able to close the keyboard with the device still in it is an essential function that is now broken for that model and new iPad Pros.

I have literally packed my iPad 2018 up to sell to a reseller this weekend. I really hope this isn’t true because I love the magic keyboard but it is ridiculously expensive and being forced to replace it is nonsense - the new one works with the old iPad so what the hell? £349 down the drain after such a short time? Yes I can sell it but being a keyboard it’ll have wear and tear so I doubt you could sell for much

Unless you think the keyboard stopped working on the 2020 iPad, its not eWaste. Just sell it and someone with a 2020 will use it.

I bet it works with the new one, but it may not close perfectly.

Good lord...it isn't waste. Just sell it along with your iPad and the new owner will have both to use.

Apple defenders UNITE. You're holding it wrong, eh?

Not LITERAL e-waste put it in the landfill, but essentially yes. Planned obsolesce at the consumers expense; you will get nowhere near the price of a new one selling a used one. Which could have easily been avoided to use an $300+ accessory for more than 1 year; ONE THIRD the cost of the iPad itself.

Oh plus the $100 iPad price increase itself let's not negate.

But you are free to bend over though for thou mighty Cook and Co. yearly.

No. This literally is consumerism run amok. Which I have no issue with (unless you run a farcical environmentalism campaign along side it)

Someone understands irony....

This title needs to be changed to say its not "officially" compatible according to Apple. They likely tweaked the design a bit, plus added the white model, but unless they moved the magnets around the old MK will still work.

People have screen protectors and skins and all sorts of stuff on their iPads right now that add up to way more than 0.5mm, and the case closes just fine.
The problem is it isn't going to close, so you are probably going to be smashing the display a bit with an awkward wedge shape.

This is pretty disappointing, but I also want to buy the white keyboard so I guess it doesn't affect me...

Any word on the opposite? Using a 2018/2020 iPad Pro with the 2021 white keyboard? I imagine it will "work" but have an air gap.

If Apple moved the smart connector and magnets then I'd agree with you. I bet the old keyboard works fine until you close it, and even then the issue is that it probably doesn't lay perfectly flat. Considering Apple went out of their way making the new iPadAir compatible with the 11" iPadPro keyboards, they didn't have to make it the same exact size, I think if Apple could have kept the same thickness they would have.

After buying an iPad Air and MK In January, I now believe Apple should probably sell iPad Pros with a MK as one unit. With M1 the Pros essentially are just iPadOS laptops, so they might as well treat them as such. Even though my finances are a bit tight right now (especially after I order my M1 Mac Mini), I may consider a 12.9 iPad Pro as a laptop replacement if they release Xcode and Logic Pro for iPadOS at WWDC, and I am essentially including the cost of the keyboard in the final price of the purchase.

This is wrong. Apple has designed their iPad Pro "folio" style accessories to fit multiple generations of iPad, but they break the MOST expensive iPad accessory they sell after only ONE generation? The Right Thing to Do™ is to offer GOOD trade-ins on Magic Keyboard for those who are purchasing a new iPad Pro, so they can get the one that fits the model.

If I get an iPad Pro 2021 (I'm seriously doubting it now), I'm going to get a Smart Folio and then use an external wireless keyboard. Not tidy, but at least it'll last more than a generation.

Come on, Apple! You are better than this!

Well, unless Apple is forcing you to upgrade to the new iPad Pro, then there is no "right thing to do" regarding your Magic Keyboard. You can always trade in or sell your current iPad Pro for cash and sell your current Magic Keyboard. Apple doesn't owe you anything unless you have some sort of written guarantee that came with your Magic Keyboard that guaranteed future compatibility.

The new iPad is thicker and heavier, so it makes sense that the old keyboard might kinda work but they improved it for the new gen pro. That's probably why the new keyboard is backwards compatible but the old one is not forwards compatible.

I think most people upgrading will sell or trade in their old device and not just throw it away - so I don't see this is an e-waste issue or anything but normal product lifecycle.

Half a millimetre should be well within tolerance and not creating crushed screens or wedged keyboards. Anyone use a skin on their iPad and a glass protector? I bet that comes pretty close to 0.5mm. And it closes like a clamshell and is fairly loose when closed (just checking and you can wiggle it a bit)

I don’t see why it wouldn’t work? I’m hoping it’s a misunderstanding.

Boy, if that is truly the case they really screwed the pooch with this one. Makes me think that the regular NON magic keyboard ALSO won’t work? I guess I really only use my MKB at home and office so it might not be a total deal breaker, but what made the new ipad thicker? Is it the micro LED tech or battery larger to support the micro led screen?

Oh, Apple

You don't change.

This can't be accurate. If so... WTF?

In a case like this Apple should offer free exchanges to the new KB revision for those who purchase the new iPad. It isn't like they renamed the keyboard either so good luck finding one that is the "new revision" in the wild. So I expect there will be many people upset who buy the keyboard even after getting their 2021 IPP only to find out it doesn't work...

They left off fully enclosing the IPP in the keyboard and I was sure this was done to make it last more than one generation. I guess not.
