I upgrade every new iteration anyways. I just sell the previous model for a nice chunk to put towards it. So I’ll be upgrading my 2019 and getting new keyboard as well.

So is it just that it won't close? I use my keyboard as a stand and keyboard on my desk and pull the iPad off that when I take it places. That set up still works, right?
Apple may have disabled it in software, we can’t know until it ships.

Boy, if that is truly the case they really screwed the pooch with this one. Makes me think that the regular NON magic keyboard ALSO won’t work? I guess I really only use my MKB at home and office so it might not be a total deal breaker, but what made the new ipad thicker? Is it the micro LED tech or battery larger to support the micro led screen?
Considering the 11" didn't change in thickness, the new Mini LED XDR screen caused the issue.

How much do you usually get back? Do you lose a lot on taxes? Where do you find buyers?

Half a millimetre should be well within tolerance and not creating crushed screens or wedged keyboards. Anyone use a skin on their iPad and a glass protector? I bet that comes pretty close to 0.5mm. And it closes like a clamshell and is fairly loose when closed (just checking and you can wiggle it a bit)

I don’t see why it wouldn’t work? I’m hoping it’s a misunderstanding.
As I posted previously: I tried it out with 5 sheets of paper (roughly 0.5 mm) en my magic keyboard closed without problems. Curious if this will be confirmed by some real world experience.

This is wrong. Apple has designed their iPad Pro "folio" style accessories to fit multiple generations of iPad, but they break the MOST expensive iPad accessory they sell after only ONE generation? The Right Thing to Do™ is to offer GOOD trade-ins on Magic Keyboard for those who are purchasing a new iPad Pro, so they can get the one that fits the model.

If I get an iPad Pro 2021 (I'm seriously doubting it now), I'm going to get a Smart Folio and then use an external wireless keyboard. Not tidy, but at least it'll last more than a generation.

Come on, Apple! You are better than this!
Exactly what I ended up opting for, unless your planning on not upgrading your iPad for 4-5 years no matter what, I personally think the magic keyboard is a con trick and part of apples plan to screw money out of its customers...

In 18 months we all know yet another keyboard will come out with function keys and a tablet mode, which will only be compatible with the new generation iPad Pro...

Personally a smart folio and Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad combo has so many pro points...

-Cheaper
-Better materials
-Function keys
-Larger Trackpad
-Last several generations of iPad regardless

Only downside is that it’s not an all in one solution, but if I want a keyboard permanently attached to my iPad I might aswell save some $$$ and get myself a MacBook Air

In all fairness, most people (outside of this forum) that have an ipad and a MK will not buy this product.

Second, it adds a ton of complexity to the user experience (don't want to be the Apple retail specialist trying to explain to the average customer that a specific model of keyboard that they purchased on sale in another store and that looks the exact same as the new one doesn't work with the new iPad model if it's the big model, but works if it's the small one)

If they went to the trouble of updating the keyboard, it must have been necessary (e.g. the pressure on the keys might damage the screen).

This is great, now I can get a cheap MK when I buy a used 2020 iPP.

FWIW, this has been my setup for years. Currently, use an 2020 iPP in a ZuguCase with an old AA-battery magic Keyboard in my bag just in case in need a physical keyboard. I personally prefer the separation of functions (protective case is not also a keyboard.)

So adding $350 to the upgrade price... I doubt I’ll upgrade, as I have the 2020 version, and I’m not an artist or photo/video editor, but I think I’ll stick something 0.5mm thick to the back of my current iPad, and see if the Magic Keyboard closes ok. I already have a skin on the back of it, and that works fine.

Also, I find the loud click of the Magic Keyboard maddening, and I run into problems when I enable “Tap to click”, so there’s no way I’d spend another $350 on an almost-identical Magic Keyboard to the one I have. If they’d only make Magic Keyboard 2, with a touch pad like the MacBooks.

It definitely seems that the “old” Magic Keyboard for 12.9” has been phased out.

On the Apple Store app just now, your only options are the MK for 3rd Generation iPad Pro 11” OR 5th Generation iPad Pro 12.9” (see screenshots).

So, yes, it seems the 2020 Magic Keyboard for 12.9” is gone/discontinued?

As people have said though, on the current MK you can fit a screen protector or a protective cover (like Coverbuddy or Pitaka MagEZ cases) on the iPad Pro and the MK still closes? Weird that they are making a whole new MK.

I am guessing based on this info that it may still work but be a less ideal experience. I am going to buy one and test it. I actually used the 2020 iPad with my previous keyboard until this one shipped and it was kind of like this, the camera didn’t fit but it still worked.

But we're environmentally friendly. Meanwhile creates e-waste with a 1 year old $300+ product that can't be re-used.

If this was a cheap well under $100 basic form-fitting case, ok sucks but ok. The dimensions are slightly different. But this thing was already WAY overpriced.

And they could have left a bit extra space (talking 1-2mm) in the thickness when closing up. There was nothing preventing that like a traditional case that wraps around.

This is intentional obsolescence. Regardless what Apple fanboy sites want to say claiming "There’s no conspiracy to make you buy a new keyboard." Rigghhhhtttt
There's a lot of reasons to be frustrated with the news, but you're making up nonsense. Are you planning to throw away that iPad Pro currently sitting in the case? No. So if it doesn't go into the trash, why will the case? It won't. If you got a new iPad, there wouldn't be any reason for the old Magic Keyboard not to stay with it, rather than throw it away out of spite. Pass it on as a hand-me-down. Make someone in your family happy.

I have literally packed my iPad 2018 up to sell to a reseller this weekend. I really hope this isn’t true because I love the magic keyboard but it is ridiculously expensive and being forced to replace it is nonsense - the new one works with the old iPad so what the hell? £349 down the drain after such a short time? Yes I can sell it but being a keyboard it’ll have wear and tear so I doubt you could sell for much
That’s the problem. What does someone purchasing second hand feel the Magic Keyboard is worth? I’m wiling to bet most people want to save initial upfront cost and will offer to buy the iPad Pro separately. I doubt most will be able to get more than $100-$150 extra for it.

The problem is it isn't going to close, so you are probably going to be smashing the display a bit with an awkward wedge shape.

This is pretty disappointing, but I also want to buy the white keyboard so I guess it doesn't affect me...

Any word on the opposite? Using a 2018/2020 iPad Pro with the 2021 white keyboard? I imagine it will "work" but have an air gap.
But it does close, like iPads today close with skins/screen protectors on. Take like 5 or so sheets of paper and shove it in there, its 100% fine. This is a consumer grade hinge, theres probably more than 0.5mm of difference between different peoples MK just due to production tolerance.

And the MK is not going to "smash" the display. The hinge is stiff, but it's not going to be putting any level of pressure that could do any sort of damage to glass and aluminum.

I think this is more likely that they made a new tweaked model and just didn't go back and update the spec page of a product they no longer sell. Seriously folks, this is much ado about nothing, the old MK will work fine.
