yeah be interesting what 14 inch MacBook Pro brings...I love my M1 air so I will stick with this for a while. Will fill a need when I need a keyboard.

I won’t be buying another MK thats for sure
Nice! I helped my dad order a 16GB/512GB M1 Air and he’s blown away. I’ll probably do a 256GB/16GB Air myself. Which spec did you do? I just think given my 2018 iPad Pro is still phenomenal, my base 2017 MacBook Pro is the one to upgrade.

Keyboard Cases from any number of manufacturers are almost always year / model specific. Not just an Apple thing.

Will the old ones work with the new iPads though ?

Except the other manufacturers don’t make a ton of noise about how they’re removing stuff people need to tackle eWaste. Surface Pro keyboards support multiple generations.

Will someone put please 5 and 10 sheets of printer paper (5 is around the thickness increase so it would be cool to see what happens with 1mm change) to see if there is an issue with closing the MK. Glass screen protectors are .26 mm.

Apple defenders UNITE. You're holding it wrong, eh?

Not LITERAL e-waste put it in the landfill, but essentially yes. Planned obsolesce at the consumers expense; you will get nowhere near the price of a new one selling a used one. Which could have easily been avoided to use an $300+ accessory for more than 1 year; ONE THIRD the cost of the iPad itself.

Oh plus the $100 iPad price increase itself let's not negate.

But you are free to bend over though for thou mighty Cook and Co. yearly.

Someone understands irony....
A 2020 iPad Pro still works perfectly, why do you need to upgrade after just one year?! By the time your current iPad Pro is old enough to be retired, I’m sure your current keyboard would be as well.

This has already been done by me and others here, and 5 sheets of 28lb paper fits perfectly and causes no issues.

Weight distribution and how stable it is? If so I probably wouldn’t car with how I use it

we should get impressions the day before orders open and I wonder how freely they’re able to review them - surely someone will test the current keyboard?

Wow. Talk about poor planning. Shouldn't this next-gen iPad have been in the works before they released the 1st-gen Magic Keyboard. They ought to do something to lessen the pain of this for anyone looking to upgrade. But I'm sure they won't.

Half a millimetre should be well within tolerance and not creating crushed screens or wedged keyboards. Anyone use a skin on their iPad and a glass protector? I bet that comes pretty close to 0.5mm. And it closes like a clamshell and is fairly loose when closed (just checking and you can wiggle it a bit)

I don’t see why it wouldn’t work? I’m hoping it’s a misunderstanding.
I used several sheets of varying thickness to see what would happen with my Pro and MKB. It was only when I got to 2mm thickness that a small gap occurred which could cause it to open unexpectedly. At .5mm up to 2 there was no gap and no issue whatsoever in closing it. So until someone actually has one in hand this is still all speculation. The additional weight - 52 grams - doesn’t seem to be enough to cause any problems.

The Verge, AppleInsider, etc. are all referencing a French article that claims to have seen a document issued to Apple Stores. No one, not the Verge or anyone else has had any official comment from Apple confirming this. Meanwhile several have had chat conversations with Apple Support claiming it will be compatible. Right now no one will know anything until next week, if one of the review sites actually gets their hands on the new iPad.

But strange that the Apple support did not confirm this story. Do verge and this French page have the latest Pro and MK?

Yup. But they could have easily have planned to keep the size the same and simply hit constraints in the final stages of implementing the miniLED screens.

It doesn’t appear that anyone has one, or they are being prohibited by Apple from making any statements.

I have literally packed my iPad 2018 up to sell to a reseller this weekend. I really hope this isn’t true because I love the magic keyboard but it is ridiculously expensive and being forced to replace it is nonsense - the new one works with the old iPad so what the hell? £349 down the drain after such a short time? Yes I can sell it but being a keyboard it’ll have wear and tear so I doubt you could sell for much
The problem is you assumed future generations of new tech would be compatible when Apple never led you to believe such in the first place.

"The news, first reported by French site iGeneration and confirmed via sources familiar with the matter to The Verge", so they are not just quoting the french site.

Apple is a pretty big company and pretty secretive as well, so I can see how some support staff would not have briefed yet about such a detail. I unfortunately will side with the verge and french blog on this one.

Why do you force yourself to the wrong belief that an iPad Pro MUST be upgraded at a faster pace than its keyboard accessory?!

Not exactly:
The news, first reported by French site iGeneration and confirmed via sources familiar with the matter to The Verge, means that if you’re looking to upgrade from a 2018 or 2020 12.9-inch iPad Pro to the refreshed model (with its Mini LED display, faster M1 processor, and upgraded camera), you’ll also have to shell out an extra $349 for a new Magic Keyboard case, even if you already bought the prior version.

This is what The Verge is saying. This is really disappointing if true.

Yeah, they’re usually model specific, but none of the others cost $349. I think if it were $149 this would be a much smaller thread.

I’ll just sell old one with both kbs I got for it. What a concept. But thinking of gifting it.

Keep your current 2020 / 2018 iPad Pro’s with magic keyboard. Save your nearly 2 grand (with tax and $400 for the new MKB) money for those beautiful new 14” MBP’s coming later this year. They will be far more drool worthy than this update anyways. If this is absolutely true, my desire to sell my 2018 12.9” iPad Pro just went out the window. Big iPad OS changes are the only thing that could sway this purchase now.

I will wait and see. I have just tried closing my iPad Pro with 1/2mm of papers to try to mimic the extra thickness and it seems to work. Apple has probably left a bit of slack to allow for screen protectors, etc. Maybe the 2021 MK is slightly larger still to continue with that slack, but it will not mean the 2020 version will not work. I suggest we wait until someone reliable has tried before complaining about what may turn out to be a non-issue
