I would not be surprised if these are the exact same screens updated with a firmware update cause the nits improvement are only available because of the powerful M3.

This isn't a hardware feature, there are a bunch apps that can increase the SDR brightness. I use BetterDisplay to do 160%.
Another app is Vivid. Doubles the SDR brightness from 500 nits max to 100 nits max. One off 10€ price.

There's also MonitorControl (free and open source) which doesn't increase brightness past max, but can give you finer control, including finer minimum brightness (the keyboard shortcuts (F1/F2) can bring brightness down to 6%, then 0%, but shift-option-F1 can bring it down to 1% with this app). It also lets you control external monitor brightness and volume.

I can't handle higher nits like up to 1600. I've seen HDR at full brightness it's way too bright. My personal perference but most would disagree.
Your pupils dilate and shrink according to ambient light. Ever woken up in a dark room and been blinded by someone turning the lights on? Or walked outside into bright sunlight. Yep, 1600 nits will be blinding in that dark room, or possibly indoors, but outdoors on a bright sunny day, maybe it's just right.

The point is, having the ability to increase brightness according to ambient light, is where this is useful. It's not about running it at max brightness in a dark room.

I wonder if you guys actually use your displays at peak brightness...
All the time. Some of us don't have your youthful eyesight anymore, kid.

I have Vivid installed. Doubles the max brightness of SDR content from 500 nits to 100 nits. Brilliant for us 300+ yr old grandpas with our MBP's mounted in our walking frames.

pre-recorded advertisements prevent the audience from booing (and throwing rotten apples to) the speaker for releasing more expensive 8gb products.

steve jobs, or anybody else, would have hung his face in shame if they had shown this in person.
I agree, except for the part about Steve Jobs. He was never shy about rip off prices. He was also still around when they started soldering in RAM, so that you couldn't self upgrade with 3rd party RAM without the scary insane Apple Tax.

$7,000 Canadian for the 16" , 1TB model, just unbelievable its $2,000 more than last generation. I don't think I'll be a mac user for that much longer. Its unfortunate without competition this is what happens.
It’s actually $4650 CAD for the 16” 1TB model. $150 more than its predecessor in the lineup and over $200 less than the US price given the exchange rate. No idea where you are getting these insane numbers and imagined gripes from.

I've been using BetteryDisplay and thought there was something funny going on. When I close the app the screen became dim. Now dim here is 600nits which of course isn't dim at all, but compared to 1600nits (or whatever it is with that app) it is dim.

I'm not sure about that level of brightness but I sure do like it. But it just goes to show you how relative this sort of thing is. Its strange.
