most other companies wouldn't even consider this. Just goes to show how great of a company apple is. I just hope this doesn't hurt it as company especially in this damn economy. Wouldn't want to hear that apple needs a bail in coming months lol!

That's why paying more for Apple's product, not only for the item quailty, but also for the great customer service :D

It happened the same on me too. I bought my Alu Macbook 13" at the beginning of this Feb. There are no Apple store in my area, so I have to purchase my order from the local reseller.

After the 8th day, the 13" macbook start acting up, it freeze up randomly, become really unstable, so I call up the local reseller, turned out they told me that it's outside of the 7 days return period(and they keep focus on arguing the return period, didn't bother trying to help my issue.), and point me to contact Apple care...... What the.....! I mean, It's a brand new macbook and I have to take it for service only used for a week?!

So anyway, I called Apple hotline, showed them whats the problem and told them the whole story, and they transfer my case to the customer relationship dept., The CR agent was very helpful. He call up the local reseller, ask them give me a replacement, but the reseller refused. So, then the CR agent let me do the exchange from them directly, also allow me to upgrade to Macbook Pro without any restocking fee, i still had to pay the difference in cost. But, it made me really happy and satisfied. :D

Apple was so nice to allow me to keep both Macbook and the Macbook Pro for a couple days to transfer my data. And have their people come my office to deliver and pickup the macbook & macbook pro in two different date.

I'm thrilled for the whole process, how they handle the case, so much care about their cumstomer. :D

I got my new 2.66 Macbook pro, yesterday and am now just backing up my macbook before I start to set up my new machine.

OP, and Shoppy,

Would you guys mind letting us/me know whether you 2.66 MBPs are running the P9600 or the T9550 processor?

Thanks in advance!

They agreed to swap out my 2.8 15" MBP for a 2.93 today!

I know that's fairly normal, but in this case it was a developer discount machine which specifically says no returns or exchanges. And it was a custom config (2.8Ghz) on top of that, which is also supposed to be no returns.

So I'm really happy with them making the exception. That extra 4% speed will make my work go so much faster. :)

lol you wont even know the extra speed is there. but you will feel better about yourself whenever you look at "about this mac"

Sure, um is there a way to find out which processor it is? Like, somewhere I can look on the computer or...?

Hi - yes there is a program called CPU-Z for Windows. If you have bootcamp/parallels/vmware you can install it and check the processor.

I am not sure if there is a similar program for OS X so if someone else wants to chime in.

Thanks for the assistance.

Great to hear that CSR helped you out. Some 3rd party resellers are like that which is why I refuse to deal with them. It's either online or at an ARS. An example where 3rd party really screws up was one time a customer purchased the white MacBook with AppleCare. The headphone jack was not working correctly so she called in and explained to me her problem. At the time, she was ineligible for support and I let her know that but she said she purchased AppleCare. I asked her what her AppleCare enrollment number was and she didn't know what I was talking about as she didn't get the AC box (reseller forgot to give it to her). She calls back the reseller with me on the phone and told the customer, "ENROLLMENT NUMBER IS NOT NEEDED TO ENROLL APPLECARE, MANY CUSTOMERS IN THE PAST HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND WERE ABLE TO ENROLL". I started to argue with the reseller for a few min. before hanging up. Ultimately, I was able to provide an exception with CSR reviewing the reseller and the situation.

At the end CSR is ALWAYS your best friend!:D

Apple are simply amazing, I have walked away from the store with a new 2.66 macbook pro after taking my macbook into the genius bar to get fixed. To explain I purchased a macbook back in early Jan, and the HDD failed, due to work I have been abroad till Tuesday when I arrived back in the country.

I booked a genius appointment to get the problem sorted. The genius enquired as to why I had waited so long to get the problem rectified. I explained that due to work, I had been abroad and was unable to do so. I had intended to bring the machine in, but had flown out on the evening with the machine and had simply used the machine via my external HDD having my main OS image on it.

So he offered me a replacement rather then a repair, saying that if I had been in the Uk that would have there course of action. I was speechless and simply said are you serious. To which the friendly genius said "yes".

I said actually I wanted to change it to a macbook pro will that be a problem, genius said nope and so I paid the difference and walked out with a 2.66.

I returned the other 2.66 that I brought yesterday and am now sat here in the morning setting up my machine. The wife is happy, as I was intending to sell my macbook once repaired and keep the 2.66. So now I have a 2.66 and have no made no loss on selling the macbook.

Apologies for the long version, I just wanted to say apple are great when you have a problem.

Oh, I know I won't notice any real difference. But it would bother the heck out of me that I missed a "free" update by 2 days.

Plus you never know, the new version may finally be good with more than 6GB ram. I'd be curious to find out.

Well, interestingly enough, I can't really tell much of a difference (far as performance, speed etc) between the 2.66 and the 2.53 I had previous. I do notice this one gets abit warmer under the bottom although.

So on the Macbook Pro's with the 2.53 Processor one can't install and see 6GB of RAM:confused:

The max is 4 then?

They are now discounting the Macbook Pro 15" models with the 2.53 cpu in them now in HK at 18,200 HKD.

No, you can do 6. I'm just wondering if the newest ones will do more than 6. In other words, 8.

Just seems odd that the new 2.66 and 2.93 iMacs can do 8GB (and they basically use the same processors, and same integrated video with shared RAM). And then I can't imagine Apple would bother having any real hardware or firmware differences between a current 2.93Ghz iMac, a current 2.93Ghz MBP 15, and a 2.93Ghz MBP 17.

I might order two 4GB modules and give it a shot. I can always use one in another machine if the experiment doesn't work.

(Unless someone has already tried this with the latest 2.66 or 2.93 MBP 15s)

You think there is that much difference between the 2? I was thinking of buying the Macbook Pro today with the 2.53 Processor in it? Seems like everything else is the same other then the Processor. Isn't the video the same?? Since I was going to throw in a new SSD I didn't think it would make that much of a difference in performance after.

I doubt you would notice any difference at all between a 2.53 and a 2.66. If you are getting some sort of discount on the 2.53, go for it.

In my case, the 2.93 is exactly the same price as I paid for the 2.8, so for no extra money I'm happy that Apple is doing the swap for me.

Thanks for the heads up OP. I just got my replacement 2.53 MBP, which I got last week when my 3 year old MBP died, exchanged for a 2.66 with no hassles at all.

BTW, always handy to have a case number, the manager was reluctant at first but then I pulled out the almighty case number :D

I bought my 2.53 about 3 weeks ago with an edu discount at my college. I might be able to get them to switch it out since it's still under the 30 days. BUT, I'm not sure it's worth the hassle just to get 0.13 speed increase. First off, I'd have to get them to agree to the replacement... then I'd probably have to pay the difference in price. Then, there is the remote possibility that I'd get a problem machine. My current MBP is perfect and I'm not sure I want to risk getting an inferior product that has a pixel out or some other anomaly that my current machine doesn't have. Seems I'd have to do a lot of work and assume a bit of risk just to get a machine that only runs 0.13 faster. Especially if it's not noticeable.

Does anyone know for sure if there are other differences besides the speed bump? If it was a better processor or was able to accept 8gb of ram... then it might be worth getting a swap.

How do you get a case number???

Explain to them the situation, most of the time they will give u a case number just for calling, if not ask them if they can make a case and add the notes stating that you bought a 2.53 and want to upgrade to a 2.66.

When I called he simply told me that he would give me a case number without me asking, and told me to hand it to the manager at the apple store.

So I bought my 2.54 MBP in October 2008... You think I can still qualify for a 2.66?

Wow! Thats a great story! I wish I could do that, but mine is no longer in the 30 days slot. I might have to bring it in anyway because of the screen flicker when I am running on the 9400 card :(
