New 15" rMP now available on Apple Store in UK. And a cheaper riMac

Same for me in US. Still Haswell.

Yep, so now there is a new lower end 27" iMac Retina 5K for $1,999. That takes the place of the former higher end non-retina iMac that was the same price. The $2,299 (after $200 price cut) model is still the same one as before, just with a new lower price.

The verge has just confirmed it!

A month after updating the 13-inch MacBook Pro with its new Force Touch trackpad tech, Apple has today revamped two of its bigger siblings, releasing new versions of its 15-inch MacBook Pro and 27-inch iMac. As with the 13-inch model, the new 15-inch MacBook Pro now boasts a Force Touch trackpad, while the new 27-inch iMac is losing its hybrid hard drive setup but selling for a lower price, $1,999.

The $200 savings is nice, but disappointing to see no update to the hardware on the Retina. Not that I even expected an update until October, but this rumor had gotten me semi-excited haha

If Apple were going to update only the Force Touch trackpad, then they would have done it at the same time they released the 13" Broadwell MBP with the Force Touch trackpad. This release of the 15" MBP will be based on Broadwell.

Apple has just released a new 15 inch MacBook Pro with the same Haswell processors and the Force Touch trackpad. I hate to say told you so, but I did. I would have liked to believe you but I guess I'll be waiting for the next refresh.

There is no reason to feel this way. Undoubtedly, in the past Intel GPUs were garbage, and only applicable to cheap laptops, since they couldn't even play HD movies without lag. These days however, Intel has made leaps and bounds of progress with their GPUs. Their highest end GPUs are sort of hybrid GPUs that mostly share RAM with the CPU, but also have a small amount of dedicated RAM. The performance of the Iris Pro has shown to be quite good.

We now have the 5th gen in the 13 inch model, and will be getting it in the 15 inch soon. The performance should be quite good.

Thanks for those stats, but now, please compare it to an ATI or nVidia GPU... Intel is so far behind. Plus, not having dedicated RAM really hurts performance.
Also, for such an expensive computer, the least Apple could do is add a decent GPU, not a crappy and cheap Intel Iris Processor that sucks your RAM to do its job.

You did, and you were WRONG. According to Apple support, they're Broadwell.
See my screenshot from post #265.

100% incorrect. This is Haswell. Broadwell would have brought slightly higher clock speeds and 1866MHz LPDDR3 memory.
If you try to customise the specs, the order page even refers to it as fourth gen which is Haswell...

'Enjoy incredible performance from the fourth-generation quad-core Intel Core i7 processor.'

Your Apple support person is misinformed!

My wife and I are contemplating a 27-inch Retina iMac. For those that own the 27-inch non-retina, are you happy with it? I am trying to determine if the premium is worth it (especially, if these rumors are true).

I have a Late 2012 27" iMac (3.2 i5, 680MX GPU) and I love it.

It is near silent, even under load, runs very cool and has plenty of CPU and GPU grunt for whatever I throw at it (gaming in bootcamp mainly).

Even under heavy gaming the temperatures are nice and low - around 70 C with stock clocks (It has plenty of overclock headroom, but I don't bother since it is more than powerful enough for me as is).

The screen is excellent, and if you sit at an average distance away from it (around 33") then it's physically indistinguishable from a retina screen unless you have razor eyesight (that's simply physics). If you are closer to it then you will be able to tell the difference, but even then, it's an outstanding screen.

By all accounts the major downside of going for the retina iMac is that it runs hot due to the GPU they stuffed in there. The 680MX I am running is cool and quiet, as is the 780M in the current non-retina (they're basically the same card). The AMD card in the retina runs hot and causes throttling issues if you push it hard.

If you never intend to work it hard then the retina screen may be worth the premium to you.

I believe the 680MX is equal to the GTX 775M and the 780M is a small increase over that (~15-20%).

Try asking them the actual model number of the CPU instead of asking if they know the nickname of a processor series is?!
There's nothing stopping others from calling. Unless otherwise informed, I'm now waiting for next year's model.
