Broadway would only be "incremental" for people who bought Haswell. There are many who own MBPs from 2011 and even 2012 for whom Broadwell would be a significant upgrade because of the hardware changes (faster SSD, advanced Wi-fi, longer battery life, Force-touch trackpad, etc.)

And lets not forget, October's re-design (if true) would be the FIRST version of a brand-new model. Anyone with long familiarity with Apple products knows the perils of purchasing such. The first MBP (I bought one) fairly sucked: overheating issues, old and slow DVD drive, underpowered Core Duo processor). The first Retina MBP (I bought one) had image retention issues and underpowered HD4000 graphics. The same goes for the first iPad, iPhone, iPod touch -- the second versions of each were dramatically improved.

The smart move would be to buy the Broadwell MBP (on Wednesday?), then you can sell for a good price when Apple releases Skylake MBP version 2 (probably in June 2016).

Plus, you fall into the loop where "why buy Skylake, next year's processors will be a HUGE improvement!"

Unless it's like a week before a major Apple keynote, you should just buy as you need.

... Do you think the upgraded Alpine Ridge Thunderbolt set will come with every Skylake Cpu?

No. The Skylake version of Core M may not get the bump increase of PCIe v3.0 to all of its PCIe lanes. In affordable tablets and 2-in-1's primarily targeted at the latest blazing speed Thunderbolt isn't a "top 3" issue. The 12 PCIe v2 lanes are more than sufficient bandwidth for that class and likely lower power also.

For the Skylake offerings targeted at the MBP ( U and H ) and the iMac probably yes for MBP, Mini, and iMac, but those would be the 2016 model updates; not this years. A maybe for the Macbook and its Core M. Depends in part upon how much the TB v3 connector is an exact merge with the USB Type C connector.

I'm still running a pre-unibody MacBook Pro from 2008 - It's been cooked once in the last 12 months to keep it going, so I'm definitely excited about the possibility of Wednesday.

Whilst I'm not the biggest fan of Force Touch, that hasn't stopped me almost buying the the updated 13" Macbook Pro every day for the last few weeks. But in reality I'd like to keep the 15" screen I've become accustomed to, not to mention the inclusion of a discrete GPU.

I know anything released will be a huge upgrade for me.. But for purposes of discussion I'd love to see a 900 series nVidia chipset.

I see a lot of people going on about Skylake and a radical re-design, but in reality they have to bring the 15" up to the standards of the 13" before they start re-designing products.

Also don't forget the distinct possibility that the next revision loses major ports, possibly including the SD card slot, which I use as an expansion slot with a 128gb JetDrive sitting in it.

I always try to purchase the very last revision of a model. And this upcoming one would seem to be it...

Oh man. If that 27" comes out this week I'm buying. Was waiting for Skylake, but my 2009 iMac is just too much of a pain.

What October redesign rumor?

Development and photography...

The former involves running VM, servers and editors which can be memory hungry, not to mention running simultaneously Firefox, Chrome and Safari, each with dozens of tabs open.
The later involves processing RAW files, HDR files and stitching panoramas - and the last two can eat a lot of RAM.

I'm actually surprised at how well OSX handles RAM (since my desktop computer is a homemade tower, I just pushed the RAM to 24 GB since it's so cheap and Windows is happy). Most of the time, my Macbook runs fine. But I use up all 8GB and RAM pressure is usually in yellow - if I start a VM or two, things start to slow down...

The VMs are a different matter, but what photo editing software are you using that's eating up that much RAM?

So why isn't Apple waiting to update until this fall? I can't see them updating in May and then again in the fall. Unless they're working on a redesigned machine for Skylake and they will announce that in the fall?

I doubt it. That seems way too close back to back. I wouldn't expect another release until March 2016, if they release an update in May this year. They normally go 9-18 months between updates.

Have Apple responded to this? Does this affect all current MBP-r models?

No and when I brought in my RMBP in because of this issue, I was only covered because I had AppleCare. The genius told me had I not had it, it would NOT have been covered (around a $780 bill)

Wow, and I thought I was suffering. You sure get a lot of use out of your machine.

Possible, but unlikely. It would be likely if the MacBook Pros from 2008 had shipped without built in optical drives. They didn't until 4 years later.

Let's not forget Apple aren't idiots. They know pro/prosumer users need more than consumers. So while some might get away with lack of ports on the retina MacBook, those changes don't make sense on the MacBook Pro.

The retina MacBook Pros, while taking some inspiration from the Air, still gained features like HDMI ports. They gained features where it made sense - like having an SSD or thinner design.

Who knows, it might make more sense in 2019 to have only one port, even on a pro machine. The Retina MacBook might enforce that change now accessory makers have a reason to support USB-C. Or ports will become what only "pros" need. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. The Retina MacBook hasn't even replaced the MacBook Air yet!

Pros will look at the price and buy the cheapest computer that gets the job done comfortably... For instance, if as a pro you only use word processing, you will buy a Macbook Air.

Didn't get a quote notification, odd.

Yeah, I agree with you. But my point still stands: products like Mac mini are aimed at people on a budget.

They probably save money this way. Broadwell now and then Skylake later when the production costs fall.

Hmm this is a spanner in the works!

I have a mid 2012 Retina Macbook Pro. I am looking to upgrade to the next top of the line Retina Macbook Pro..

Do I get the one that might be released on Wednesday or do I wait until October? Is October even likely or would they just release a new one June 2016...not sure I want to wait until then!

Have they released new updates in October before? I thought Macbook Pro's were always at WWDC...

If you have the Mid 2012 rMBP stick to it until at least Skylake. Those are still plenty fast unless you work the processor hard all the time.

Also running on a 2011. Did you go straight SSD? I want to go pure SSD if I bother to go through the work of opening the iMac, but I'm unsure if putting an SSD in the main drive bay would be compatible with the heat sensor so the Fans won't spin at max.

I got this kit from OWC. It lets you put the SSD under the optical drive and keep all original drives. I formatted everything and use the SSD for booting OS X and apps.

Works like a charm and the performance improvement is substantial. I'm pretty experienced in working inside computers, but this was my first time inside a Mac. Took me about 45 minutes. It takes most people about 60-90 minutes following the video OWC provides.

This makes perfect sense. Broadwell is a ho-hum update but it gets them to this fall with a Skylake upgrade.

-P

Yeah, mine was almost maxed out when I ordered it, went for the faster i7, 16GB etc. But the battery is certainly not what it once was, and the 650 is a bit behind the curve but I still love mine. When we get to the Skylake refresh I'll probably strongly consider it.

I got the lower end model back then. I wish I went for more storage but otherwise I'm still happy with it. Yeah, the battery, I almost have 1000 cycles by now and it lasts 3h at most with light use, pretty bad. I'm gonna get it replaced in the near future and then keep on using it for a couple more years :)

Just having a jab at the Macs that are being churned out lately haven't been significantly faster than their predecessor by any means, in some cases just a handful of Geekbench points - and that new Macbook we've seen with one port - yep, slower than the model it replaced.

That new Macbook with one port didn't replace anything.

The VMs are a different matter, but what photo editing software are you using that's eating up that much RAM?

Nikon Capture NX, Photomatix Pro and Autopano. With some Photoshop. The more RAM you have, the faster Autopano will be since it will be able to avoid running on disk. For the rest, it's usable with 8GB, but you have to remember to close things before launching them and you tend to have several photo softwares running (like Photomatix and Photoshop).
It's a contrast with my desktop computer where I do not even bother closing Chrome and its 30 tabs or Photoshop before launching a game...

But it's only a matter of comfort. It's the VM that are really killing RAM.

I hope the new 15" is redesigned. Else I will skip that release.

I used to look forward for redesigned models. But lately, seeing what Apple is doing with their recent machines, the word "redesign" makes me more nervous than excited.

It might be just a GPU bump?
It would be nice to see maxwell nvidia gpus.
I think that's gtx 965m and up.

Skylake will be a great choice especially if you like igpu only machines.

Next year with nvidia and AMD moving from 28nm to 16nm we will have noticeable improvements in gpu power.

I'd like to see hard drives replaced with just ssd in the iMacs.

Interesting! I look forward to what the iMac-update will bring. Standard fusion-drive and SSD as no-cost option possibly? Maybe even Retina across all 27"-models? (too soon I believe).

Had I payed full price for my late 2013 iMac 27" back in april, I would have been annoyed by now!
...Luckily, I payed less for my iMac than even a 11" MBA costs from the Apple Store here in Sweden, so I should probably be able to use it for a year or two and still get my money back.

Not really interested in the 15" laptops. Been there done that (15" MBP) and it's not for me anymore. But great for those of you who have been waiting! :D

I'm not sure what happens with prices when new MBPs are released.

Based on previous releases, if the current high end model costs $2,500, will the updated high end model also cost $2,500?
