Me too, I'm fine with it. Plus, they still had a dedicated graphics card in the lower end model, not the case anymore today.

Yeah, mine was almost maxed out when I ordered it, went for the faster i7, 16GB etc. But the battery is certainly not what it once was, and the 650 is a bit behind the curve but I still love mine. When we get to the Skylake refresh I'll probably strongly consider it.

I'm guessing they're going to treat this as a minor spec bump, release it early so they don't have to talk it up on stage, which will give them leeway to announce a 'proper' update when the skyline stuff is ready.

Looks like a Broadwell bump with the timing. Guess they could demo a revised Mac Pro at WWDC?

I'm surprised that Apple would update their models before the summer buying season for education. Normally they run specials in September to clear out inventory after the end of the summer purchasing season and then release new models in the Fall.

Probably a longer drawdown period that usual. Given the 13" updates were a while ago. I don't see this effecting Student Promotions. :apple:

Pros and Prosumers will look into specs, and want faster computers.

Pros will look at the price and buy the cheapest computer that gets the job done comfortably... For instance, if as a pro you only use word processing, you will buy a Macbook Air.

Yes, I made the mistake of buying the first rMBP with only 8GB of RAM... The RAM is what is really killing me right now, along with the issues of the first rMBP (pretty bad screen ghosting - I have to go see a genius about replacing my screen - and stutter in the GUI).
But I really don't care that much about the CPU or GPU, it doesn't really make that much of a difference in most use cases (unless you're doing 3D work or gaming).

Good timing ... ordered a refurbished fully-loaded 15" from Apple over the weekend for $2719. If an update announcement comes it would be within my 14 day return period, so I can weigh saving over $520 vs. new goodies that may be worth paying full cost.

Aah you got me - I thought it had taken the place of another product but it hasn't.

That said, my point about speed is still valid. The "new" 2015 MB is slower than the 2011 Air.

Macs just aren't getting much faster. I wonder when iPhone's will start overtaking desktops...

Define "slower" because its got a faster SSD and faster USB and faster memory...

There are more to computers than just the CPU you know? The Macbook is slimmer than the Air, it features Intel's smaller mobile processor. Your complaint seems to be more than Intel's processors and CPU's in general are not getting more powerful quickly enough for you, thats not really an Apple or Mac issue if anything its an Intel/psychics one.

But wouldn't consumers just wait for Skylake? Unless it's not guaranteed to be available this fall?

It isn't guaranteed no - and there's no guarantee Apple would launch a Macbook with it the second it comes out either.

Because the new Broadwell laptops are making the current Haswell based MBP look bad in the press.

Who's currently shipping laptops with the Broadwell chips that would be destined for the 15" rMBP? If they were available wouldn't Apple have announced a refresh along with the 13" at the March event?

I can definitely sympathize with the image retention issue, but what are you doing that requires more than 8 GB RAM?

They haven't been announced yet. Apple typically is the first to use new mobile procs, but another rumor is that Intel would cancel broadwell-H, which could mean this version will be a minor spec bump, hence also no press release.

If there is update incoming, there is no cancellation on Broadwell - H.

Also I found the models:

i7 - 5700HQ, i7 - 5750HQ, i7 - 5850HQ, i7 - 5950HQ.

The only real question now is: will Apple go with AMD or Nvidia route?

Does Apple usually update laptops every 5 months.

No, but "October" is an arbitrary month someone in this thread has thrown out there at a GUESS when Skylake MIGHT be released in suitable processor form for a Macbook Pro. It might be delayed, it probably wont be out then and even when it is released there's no guaranteed Apple will just shove it into a Macbook Pro instantly.

If I were to hazard a guess, it wont be ready until December and then Apple would release it in February at a keynote event in a new designed body, which would be a 9 month wait for refresh. You can get a lot of work done on the new model in 9 months and then if you really want to, sell it and buy the redesign for a minor upgrade price.

But wouldn't consumers just wait for Skylake? Unless it's not guaranteed to be available this fall?

Well, Oct is still a quite a ways away. As others have posted this could be just a "feel good" moment with Skylake in the fall. Or, this could be it with Skylake next April. One never knows with Apple and the MBP. It's always been late to the party. While it's the best IMO, it's simple is too large to fit in Tim's new "Gadget Creations" priority list. :apple:

Can't wait to see the Macbook Pro benchmarks and performance.

Hopefully it competes with the top iMac specs.

What?

They're not replacing i5s and i7s with Core Ms.

I bet the 21.5" iMacs get a redesign later in the year with a super-flat design (if they are remodeled at all) and M chips inside. They will become like tabletop MacBooks, possibly with a small price reduction, but no special improvements beyond that.

And why not? They have an "iMac Pro" and then mid-level iMacs. The low-end iMacs will get the slow down like everything else.

Regarding the 15" rMBP - don't forget this isn't just a chance for Apple to upgrade the processor, it's also a chance to deploy the Force Touchpad, as per the recent 13" upgrade.

I'll probably be waiting until later in the year, so will be watching rumours of any further processor upgrades carefully...

Well I did just buy an Retina iMac 2 weeks ago, so this confirms it

I do find it interesting that only the 15" and 27" are getting "upgraded". What about the 13" and 21.5"? Getting phased out in favor of simplifying the product lines? 11", 12", 13", 15" notebooks.... I could see this. But the entry-level iMac at 22" is probably perfect for a lot of people.

Here is a nasty thought. Besides the Mac Pro, these upgrades only affect RAM-upgradable models. Maybe they no longer will have user-replaceable RAM.

Retina iMac won't get updated.

I think this will be the last 15" MacBook Pro in this form factor. Just like the last disc drive mbp was ivy bridge in 2012. The next MacBook with skylake will be 15" but not be a pro. And it will lose a lot of ports and make you feel okay you bought a pro in May.

Intel SkyLake?
I haven't even seen rumors of Skylake-H (the variant suitable for the 15" MacBook Pro) being released in 2015. I don't see any realistic possibility of a 15" Skylake MacBook Pro being released before February 2016, at the earliest.

It could be the 8K iMac that was rumored a while back ...
No, it's too soon for an 8K iMac. Maybe this time next year. Maybe.

the non-retina imac hasn't been updated in a LONG time. i am holding back a purchase of about 30 of them on that alone

damb

darn, and I just picked up a 27" imac refurb for my MIL this weekend..well it'll be going back if there is something more substantial than a processor upgrade.

Or, the refurb I picked up might get cheaper, does apple usually price match a price drop within say 14 days or something?

I think that's wise. We might be about to see the entire iMac line get Retina displays.

My wife and I are contemplating a 27-inch Retina iMac. For those that own the 27-inch non-retina, are you happy with it? I am trying to determine if the premium is worth it (especially, if these rumors are true).
