I'm jealous, I wish my OCZ worked, it would've saved me some money. Did you replace your 1 or 2tb with the SSD or add it on as a second. Or replace the factory SSD?

added it as a second to avoid temp probe/fan issues... however its being used as the primary

My computer was not originally SSD however, so it was a pain putting it in that spot as I had to connect the sata/power on the other side of the logic board

I thought i would by the iMac instead of my 2011 MBP with Thunderbolt Display but after reading this that iMac has the crappy disk i will have my MBP left.

I use a Vertex 3 Disk 240 GB in my MBP, never had one problem with it!
I get out 494 Read and 499 Write after using it 3 months.

This maybe is the fact that iMac gets only 11.500 in Benchmark with Quad I7 3,4 and my MBP with Vertex get 10.900 for a 2,2 Quad I7

I belive MBP is the "best" Mac now :) and with the Thunderbolt Display you have the most beautiful screen out there, i really hate the extra 4:3 design for iMac with the Alu of the bottom its really not close to the beauty of the Cinema Display.
Yes i had iMac for several years :)

iMac is still far better for the money you spend which is why I decided on it instate of MBP. Sure if you need something that is portable MBP is the best option but certainly not as a desktop replacement.

Why not? you have the best in 2 Worlds.
The Speed and you can carrey it with you all the power everywhere you go ;)

The iMac with SSD its not so much faster so speed is not the problem with the MBP, and you get 2 Displays instead of one.. The only thing is this config is more expansive but i think thats the only drawback.

And one more thing a iMac is not a Desktop they have the same Graphic and Processors like a Laptop, to get a Real not laptop processor you need to go with Mac Pro (next Gen) and Graphic is also a mobile version in iMac.

For price and you only need a Desktop iMac is Great, for flexibility and money no problem MBP and Thunderbolt Display is to go :)

Yes I paid 3100 for the iMac. $250 for Kingston apple spec ram. And $600 for the 510. I figured if I'm spending the money might as well do it right. I don't want a hacked up iMac even if I could've saved myself $400. It would be like buying a Ferrari and putting wal mart tires on it. I feel I got my money's worth now. I can boot up without the spinny animation even showing up now. programs including iTunes open instantly. So the time I save over 2 year in waiting I'll make up my $400[/QUote

Too much money to spend for more speed especially since 6 months from now a better CPU with a faster cheaper SSD will most likely be available.
By the way, are you really that impressed with saving 10 second here and there????

What concern is it of yours how someone else (who you don't know) spends their money? And what right do you have to condemn him (or her) for spending their money on such things? Are their needs the same as yours? Do they do identical things on their computer that you do on yours? Do they need the same power, the same memory, the same SSD as you? Are you spying on them?

Free will. Find a dictionary and look up what it means. Then look up the word "blinkered", followed by the phrase "narrow minded".

Equally, why does it matter if there's going to be a new iMac model out in a bit? Does that automatically make the existing range completely hopeless?

Another way, almost as good, quite a bit less....

I too lusted after a Quad i7/SSD after seeing the awesome videos of boot times, app launch, etc.

I fully support anyone spending their money however they want (I have my own toys :) ) but the price of these systems was high for me.

I wanted to end up with a quad i7, SSD and HD so I could run the system on the SSD and still have 1 or 2 TB HD for stuff.

I looked at the BTO imac prices, yikes!
I looked at buying a stock imac and adding the SSD. But if your starting imac did not have an apple SSD, this is not for the faint of heart (it can be done but do your research first).

In the end I took a different approach, and bought last year's model on ebay. So I have the quad 2.93 i7/256 SSD/2TB HD/8GB RAM, paid $2,035 on ebay for a machine that is 8 months old and still under warranty.

Compared to today's model, I don't have Sandy Bridge, I have 2.93 vs 3.4GHz, and I don't have Thunderbolt.

On the other hand, I saved about $1,000.

Worth considering IMHO. If you have the money and this is what you want, by all means get the new one. Just wanted to point out there are other options to consider.

PS I LOVE the SSD! Far and away the fastest computer of any kind I have ever used. Forget benchmarks, the user experience is night and day compared to a system on a traditional HD.

Cheers!

Refurbs can also be a decent way to go. I bought a Mid-2011 3.4GHz i7 with an Apple SSD. The specs said 4GB RAM and 1GB VRAM, but the unit arrived with 8GB RAM and 2GB VRAM so I paid $2500 for a system that would have run me $3000 if I BTO'd it.

By the way, are you really that impressed with saving 10 second here and there????

People in my industry pay tens of thousands to save 10 seconds here and there. So yes.

My SSDs paid for themselves in mere days just considering the increase in projects completed per time period.

Hello,

I have a BTO 27-inch iMac (2011) with SSD and I'm interested in knowing whether I can upgrade the SSD in the future without using further cables. Could someone answer these questions:

1. Is the SSD under the optical drive?
2. Is the SSD cable a standard one that I can use with newer SSDs?
3. Need anything more apart from Torx screwdrivers?

Thanks a lot!
Spinnn

How much faster would a OCZ VERTEX 3 MAX IOPS SATA III be then the toshiba 256 ssd i have in here now. Is it that much faster ??? worth the upgrade or will there be minimal difference.

Does anyone know?

Much faster (almost 2x) but... in everyday situation, it could be hard to tell (except for boot times). You should install a new SSD if you really need super-speed or you do intensive hard disk use (HD video editing, etc). That's what I've been hearing about this matter.

What about for load times of web pages and stuff like that. Also what about load times for gaming ??

I bought a Corsair Force 3 60GB SSD, a SATA power splitter and a small SATA data cable (my iMac did not include an SSD)

Best decision ever for this machine :)

what are the read/write speeds on these Vortex 3 drives? Where can i get more information about install a new SSD to upgrade from the old. How do i get the OSX and stuff on the New SSD if i have Lion ?

the last page(posts 151 and up) is the most important one. for you.

this is easy this does not void warranties .

Few questions.

1) If an authorized repair service does this for you, does it void your Applecare?
2) How much can you typically get for the SSD that came with the iMac if you sell it?
