You people are either wussies or don't know how to type. I've never had that problem, on any laptop, in any position I'm in.

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro and I'm loving it! It's zippy and renders video fast enough, I'm almost very happy.

I gotta hold back from "very happy" due to the sharp edges near the trackpad (all around really). When I rest the side of my palm on the edge of the machine to let my fingers dance around the very nice multi touch trackpad, after a few minutes my hand hurts. My palm is pressing on a sharp metal edge. I can appreciate the beauty of the device, and it's very functional, but what can be done about this sharp edge thing?

I wish I had read this article before buying:
Popular Mechanics
I probably would have still bought the laptop, but I'd be less surprised. It's a hassle! Any ideas on how to correct this?

I'm currently using a paper towel to pad my palm. There's gotta be a better solution (hopefully one that doesn't require a metal file!) I searched the site for solutions and didn't find anything, if you know of another thread give us links and you'll make my day!!

I know that this was an issue with 2010 and earlier (?) MBP's but I don't know how it's the case with the 2011. My 2011 15" MBP has smooth edges and I rest my wrists on the edges all day with no discomfort at all. I can press my palms into it with no discomfort. I definitely remember the 2010 models were very sharp but it appears they have smoothed the 2011 models at a micro level to where you cant tell visually but definitely feel it.

MBP now ships with less sharp edges (i know the latest pre thunderbolt does)

why yours have razor edges?

I'm so glad I never got the 2011 MBP (bought the previous one).

Apple, the dude ibook30 has a point. Personally I have no such problem but I can understand how it takes a tiny fraction to make the difference between unnoticable and sharp edge.

Can you 'sandpaper' it down just a little?

I had the same problem - came from a Sony Vaio that had completely rounded edges, very comfortable for how I used it (if ugly). When I got the MBP it was the first thing I noticed - the edges are sharp, and I had to readjust. No big deal, but I can certainly see it being a real concern for some people.

It's a design flaw. No consumer product should have edges that sharp.

Some say you shouldn't type with your hands or forearms resting on the computer ... that's absolute ********* ... these notebooks get used everywhere and often not an optimal height or typing position therefore at times you're going to come in contact with the edge.

It costs nothing to round the edges ... form over function to the point of stupidity in this case.

Please write Apple about it, as I and thousands of others have. It's the only way there's any hope of the flaw not being repeated in future designs.

I find it hard to believe that some people would rather file away the metal of their very expensive laptop than adjust their arm positioning/typing habits.

I suppose some people don't mind 'modifying' their possessions if they honestly think it's an improvement.

When I'm playing Warcraft I rest my wrists against the side of the machine and it does leave an impression. What I usually do is take my screen cloth and drape it over the side. I don't mind after that.

The solution is easy. Ditch your tender hands by doing manual labor. Chopping wood is recommended.

Yeah I'm surprised they left such a sharp edge. Especially the two "points" on either side of the cutout where you grip to open the lid. I've got a couple nice scratches on my wrist and under the forearm from accidentally dragging over them.

Odd.

Both 2011 17" MBPs I've had were both of fair construction - no sharp edges anywhere.

That doesn't mean there may have been a problem with a batch of constructed MBPs (anything's possible), but if nothing else, a case to cover the MBP with (Speck makes a nice 17" plastic enclosure to protect the aluminum surface...)

I'm glad I got mine. While there've been some reports of problems*, the 2011 model runs cooler than my 2009 model when under heavy load. (Even at extreme load, the 2011 runs a tad cooler...)

* that's typical of most makes/models, and that a handful of hapless customers end up having to endure... even under the best of times.

I had this same problem the first week I got my MacBook Pro.. I realised it was because my hands weren't on the palm rests properly, because I was trying not to dirty the computer..

you get used to it. I complained about it, but it's not a problem anymore. I don't think I do anything differently.

There is nothing wrong with the edges on the MBP, you just need to learn to type correctly. Don't rest your hands/wrists on the edge.

Do you use the machine at a desk? Having something that has the machine sit at an incline (like a laptop cooler) will help a lot.

Read up on the topic. It has nothing to do when typing.

For the others...I went back in to the Apple store to check out the MBPs on display. The edge on all but a couple is noticeably less sharp than mine at home. There seems to be a small variance in production.

I suppose this makes some sense. My MacBook Pro, which arrived yesterday, doesn't have particularly sharp edges. They certainly don't cause me any pain if I rest on them.

We have a 2010 and a 2011 model.

The 2010 model is very sharp, in fact i think the case was made by Ginsu.
The 2011 model isn't quite as bad, still would be nice if they take the sharp edge off.

However if i am ever stuck on a deserted island at least Ill have a way to open coconuts.

It's not a problem typing but it is when you are using the track pad for an extended amount of time it is very comfortable.

My hand hurts when using My MacBook (Aluminium)

Hi

I am using a Macbook and since buying the alluminium one my hand hurts. The pain is so bad sometimes that is aches for hours after I have used it. I also use the end of my thumb nail on the track pad, which has gone white at the area it hurts at. When I touch the laptop my arm gets a strange feeling in it. Like a numb sensation, which goes midway between my wrist and elbow. The pain is almost Arthritic and keeps me awake. It only happens in the hand I use on the track pad and not the hand I use when typing.

I often study while laying in bed and my laptop rests on my stomach, I have noticed the same pain in my stomach and thigh when using the laptop to read at night. It seems that wherever the laptop makes contact with my skin, I tend to get this pain. I use a cooler to rest my laptop on, so I don't have it against my skin completely, just the edge of the trackpad side touches my skin.

I would never have bought an Alluminium Laptop had I known this would happend as I spend a great deal of time on my laptop as I am a student and do loads of research.

Are there others with the same problem.
