So from the brilliant 'Here's to the crazy ones' ad campaign, we've gone to giving freebies to vapid youtubers who can't even string a meaningful sentence together, for some cheap guerrilla-tactic market exposure.

Indeed, times they are a changin', but my oh my, have the targets shifted and the standards fallen.
This story is in all probability the saddest one I've read on MacRumors since the passing of Steve.

disclaimer: Yes I watched all 3 videos in full. Yes I am referring mostly to contestant #3.

The first woman is pleasant to listen to. The latter two are annoying as hell, stereotypical YouTubers in the negative sense.

The main difference between the MacBook Air 2018 and the MacBook 2017 is basically Thunderbolt and an extra port, and the bigger screen.

ie. The MacBook Air 2018 is the 13" MacBook.
Yeah, that's really what it is. The MacBook Air has replaced the old MacBook, and the new MacBook has replaced the old MacBook Air. Really makes way more sense that way.

Why would anyone pay that much for such a ****** laptop?
Bc its cool and a status symbol in college maaaan.

I dont see myself downgrading from the pros....ever but I’m sure this is a great machine for the younger ones and basic people who do basic task

You hit the nail on the head.

Geekbench people! It may not be "perfect" but it gives us some sort of standardized benchmark that we can compare it against. If you are going to call yourself a reviewer of Computers and do an un-box video do it right! Benchmark it!

Wow, congrats to techmeout! I remember when she only had less than 50,000 subscribers a couple of years ago. Now, she's near 200,000! Let me resubscribe!

TechMeOut knows her stuff. She earned a sub from me when she reviewed the XS Max

Yea, that one was alright, but the other two videos on this news article... wow

Good opinion. Let's see if the company loses profit.

Geekbench doesn’t mean that much.

It does when it's run on computers you're familiar with, and a new device.
[doublepost=1541085874][/doublepost]Don't care about unboxings (one of the dumbest phenomenons of the 21st century) I want to see Geekbench/Cinebench scores.

Geekbench 4 is one of the best cross platform simple benchmarks in existence right now that can be run by anyone without expensive or custom software, etc. Plus it's good to compare chips across similar platforms and technologies. IOW, it would be a decent ballpark test to compare the performance of the i5-8210Y in the MacBook Air to the m3, i5, and i7 in the MacBooks.

The other test I would like to see is Cinebench, but run repeatedly over 10 runs. We already have that data for the MacBooks.

https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...tained-cpu-load-10-runs-of-cinebench.2073415/

Running Cinebench repeatedly would also cause the fan to ramp up if it actually exists. (I'm still not convinced the MBA 2018 has a fan.)

Is that done with the CPU or OpenGL test in that?

It actually does, and this could simply be the worst about it: we can get a machine not powerful enough, but noisy enough - the worst from 2 worlds.
[doublepost=1541087813][/doublepost]I have a MacBook Air (actually bought 2 over the last years)and never heard the fan...

I so hoped for new MacBooks (with 13"+) and new iMacs. Apple is a spoonful of sugar with some bad medicine tucked in there.

The Air is like... a nice toy... but I can't get excited over it because it seems such an oddity in the MacBook line. I doesn't enthuse via design (I like the MacBook better) and it doesn't innovate, but it sure disappoints in specs. So... it's so-so.

Unboxing a so-so is a no-go.

I bought my young lady, who's 13 now, a macbook last year for Christmas. I now won't have to worry about her saying daddy, this computer is too slow and won't do what i want it to do AT LEAST until she's 18 and beyond. We'll ensure we keep it healthy and protected. I've had my Mid 2014 MBP Retina i5 since it's introduction and it's going as strong as ever. Since there's cloud and external hard drives out there, i'm using only like 60Gigs of storage of the 256SSD.

Before getting that 1st MacBook, i had my windows computer. Within a few years, it all but totally failed and had all kinds of viruses on it. Yes I could have protected it more but it certainly was more susceptible to outside attacks than the closed ios environment Apple offers.

So though the cost is more at the start of the road, I'm finding that I'm gaining exponentially in the long-haul. This is my experience. I wish I would have known then what I see now because I'd get my 13y/o young lady this new MB..it's very nice and likely to last for years to come.

CPU: Y serie: WHY?!!
So this is a performance wise a downgrade for all previous macbook air users..

Jesus Christ.... Could the girl in the last vid be any more annoying? Like OMG like Literally Like sooooo crazy omg, like really, like for real you guys..... Who the heck subs to like torture?

Have you ever opened 20+ tabs at a time in a browser, run photo, video or audio editing software or played games on your MacBook Air? Not disparaging your comment, just wondering if the recent MacBook Airs were capable of running mostly silent under some intensive tasks.

I do hope the new MacBook Air is able to run silent like the 12" MacBook and that the fan is only audible during highly intensive tasks to sustain performance. Considering the MacBook has a 5W CPU and this MacBook Air has a 7W CPU it should be able to run fanless. I wonder if Thunderbolt 3 is the main reason for the need for extra thermal cooling.
