Geekbench doesn’t mean that much.

Surely, it does say more than showing off a color sticker on camera. Geekbench might not give the whole picture but it is a clear indication of the raw power of the cpu, so it's useful if you are interested about specific tasks.

And none of these "smaller youtubers" are able to actually review the machine. Instead they mostly show the box contents, the stickers and how good the machine looks on camera. Oh, they also show parts of the apple's keynote to fill the video time, that everyone and his cat around the entire world, has already seen.
Do you have any idea what an unboxing video means? If it was unboxing and review or something to that, sure, but just unboxing means what they did. You can argue that perhaps they weren't good unboxing videos, that's debatable, but complaining for not including things that unboxing videos do not have to include is just a bit meh.

It should have a Touchscreen, a decent keyboard and an affordable 512 Gb SSD by now. Phil’s ass can’t innovate again.
Or the whole Mac industry became stagnant after 2015
Apple has stated again and again they have no reason to include a touchscreen. They are right to do so. They have two different OSes and two different product lines. Touchscreen on laptops (or desktops) is just stupid and annoying. Both from the design (OS) part and from having a dirty screen all the time.

For its last several product releases, Apple has been providing early review units to smaller YouTubers, a strategy that provides Apple with more positive impressions from smaller youtubers eager to keep getting free stuff from Apple

"OMG. It's like totes amazeballs."

I'm a rusted on Mac owner, but sometimes the stuff that Apple does with its 40%+ profit margin makes me want to buy their products less.

The government wouldn’t send you a message about an zombie attack. That would make people only panic more... duh

It is not Apple that determines what I want - or restricts dirty screens to iPads.
So I don't care what they repeat (or say to cover their stagnancy)
In case you didn't notice: the market is asking for converts and doesn't restrict itself to what the Apple box of self-centrism offers
If Apple doesn't supply, that's their problem. Not the customer's.

Earlier today:
"Hello, this is my daughter - we’re here to upgrade her MacBook Air !
Well, you’re just in time. Our new iPad Pro’s came in this week - they’re gorgeous...!
But I am looking for a computer, not a tablet.
OK, but we’re in the Post-PC era now. Every task done with a computer, can now be done better with an iPad.
That’s fine for you. But we’re looking for a successor of this 11” MacBook Air that is 6 years and aging.
OK. No problem, that screen size has become 10.5” on this great iPad.
What are you saying ? Don’t tell me screens only got smaller in 6 years ? Almost the same time to get my daughter from the bench and stop her addictive behavior with iPaddy stuff. No, she doesn't need a pencil, because she already has 45. Now she is graduating and needs to assemble complex reports. So we need a computer and it must be really portable !
OK. Then maybe you should take the new MacBook, as it is the most portab…
No, no, no ! We want a MacBook Air - the lightest and most compact notebook
Well - ehhh… In that case we have this new 13” enclosure, the new Retina screen and 2 ultrafast TB ports…
Whut ? - with 1 for charging only ?
Man, please stop adverting the MacBook. If we needed a big thing, we’d have a MacBook Pro.
Sure, but I could show you an unboxing movie where…
Please, get a life. Or better, just forget it. I will look for myself. And next door, there's 25 Windows and Chromebook alternatives. We could buy 2 or 3 of those."

I don't understand why you would buy either this or the standard MacBook over a MacBook Pro, as they are all around the same price and look virtually the same. The MacBook Pro will be an even more obvious choice when they update it, but I wouldn't be surprised if they put the price up at the same time.

Apple are in desperate need of an affordable Mac to bring more people to the platform.

They need to revise their lineup, they now have multiple laptops competing at the same price point with relatively minor differences. If the MBA had been $1099 it would have made more sense. As it is there's no reason to buy a Macbook unless you really want a 12". The MBA seems to be a direct competitor to the base MBP 13" which has a faster CPU and a higher quality retina display. Given that you can find discounted MBP's online it makes the justification for the MBA harder. Better battery life, lighter I guess? They should drop the price of the Macbook below that of the MBA and either discontinue the base MBP or give it the 8th gen quad core.

Apple are heading up market so they're really not into affordable devices now. The 'affordable' iPhone Xr is priced at flagship premium prices. I'd be surprised if we saw a new generation laptop from Apple in the sub $1000 market again.

First video was good to watch & she's really engaging.

The girl in the second video needs to read her camera manual & learn how to set the white balance.

Third video, damn she's so annoying - I couldn't get past 6 seconds without turning it off! - however something tells me that I, as a fat middle aged bloke is probably not her target demographic.

In 2018 totally boring and overpriced laptop which should have been released years ago. As well author has no idea what small bezels mean

This is probably the most pointless MacBook ever released for two reasons. Firstly, the Y-series CPU inside is a comical joke. Yes, yes, yes, it will be more than adequate for Facebook & most web usage, but not for the price, which is the second and most major complaint I have with the 2018 MacBook Air. I watched the keynote and I thought the new MBA was impressive, especially as it had a modern Retina display. But for premium pricing I don't expect a gutless CPU to be inside. It should have been a 15W Core U-Series CPU.

Can I complain about the pricing again? The UK pricing is way beyond absurd. It's actually disgusting, especially for what is now a glorified Netbook. I don't understand what Apple is trying to do here. The MBA was a no-brainer of a purchase and was very popular with home users & students alike due to it's affordability. All Apple is doing here is giving you less for a lot more £$£$'s.

Apple has been systematically ruining the Mac line for a few years now, either by neglecting product lines or releasing gimped products when they do (E.G. 2013 Mac Pro - 'thermal corner', 2014 mini - downgrade in processing power, 2016+ MacBook Pro - ticking time bomb keyboard, 2018 MacBook Air - Y-series CPU). There's more subtle examples (gimped gpu in 2018 Mac mini, soldered non-upgradable storage, etc).

Long story short, as Tim Cook made it clear a few years back, they think iOS is our future, and even though it seems public pressure has kept them from killing the Mac line altogether, they seem intent on doing just that by releasing compromised products.

Vapid and meaningless first hands on from inexperienced gushers. Apple should be giving these units to leaders in impartiality who can communicate what is new about these airs. I'm none the wiser to why anyone would get an air over a macbook or a macbook pro?

yet they get millions of views.
Pitbull gets millions of views but that doesn't mean anything. And anyway these people were chosen because they are smaller channels. Instead most people here are judging them based on the terrible job they did on this product and how poorly they communicated any information. They are typical fluff tubers, with endless repetition and meaningless opinions about stickers just to pad out the time to 10 mins.

Who says that unboxing means that they don't even have to open the machine and offer a fast first impression ? Many YT videos called "unboxing" get to at least show how the machine runs in a very basic level, otherwise it's just a dumb process that offers nothing. We all know how to open a box. But I guess monetisation is all they care about.

Giving early access to Macs to these YouTube unboxers is a great strategy by Apple. They may not necessarily be people I'd follow but like it or not, these are the new influencers. Apple recognizes this.

Anything that gets young people using the Mac is a good thing in my book. Otherwise the platform will gradually die off.

Understand that these 'influencers' help to sell more Macs, but it's just sad that they are the ones who get the devices earlier and get to keep it for free (correct me if I'm wrong) while Apple discontinued the developer hardware purchase program.
They also killed the 1,500 ADC membership price. Which do you think is truly better for the paying developer. An occasional deep discount on hardware, or saving 1,400/yr in ADC fees?

No Mac needs a touch screen when macOS is not in any way optimised for touch.

If you want touch, then there's the iPad Pro which is the future of the Apple Computer.
