of course, it all depends on how much manufacturing the 5 gigs would cost.

sure there are people who think 30 or 40 gigs of songs is overkill. the battery won't even last to listen to all of those songs.

true...but for me a 40gb ipod would mean no more 200 scratched cd's scattered all around my car...https://forums.macrumors.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

I'd go for a new slim-line 20GB iPod.

Come on people, the battery won't even last to play through 30GB or 40GB. However, for data it's great.

Well, I sure hope the new iPods come tommorow, because I'm gettin tired of reading the same old news in all these iPod threads. I've been reading them for over a month while waiting and not much has changed. (1) Every thread has a fight over the stupid Firewire 800, (2) there is always the one person that thinks he is the first person to notice that the 5GB is on hold on apples site, (3) and you cant forget the people that think a 40GB iPod would be way to big and the long list of people who think otherwise and tell us how many songs they have. This probally seems like an ass reply, but I guess it is just because I'm about to explode if these things don't get bumped tommorow. So I'm just lettin of some steam.

THE IPODS WILL COME OUT TOMMOROW!
JUST BELIEVE!

Excellent post! So accurately observed.

If life were a gig and we were the crowd, now would be the time for someone to start the crowd clapping and stamping in time (with an inevitable cacophony of sped-up out of time applause) in a bored but excited plea to Apple to GET ON WITH IT! Come on now... "iPod!" *clap, clap clap*, etc.

Not that we should rush these things. Night all.

I must admit

I agree, I'm tired of hearing from these "imaginative" people, sure of MPEG-4, color-screens, and Bluetooth file-sharing.

But wait, aren't the iMacs (supposedly) scheduled to come out tomorrow??? ;)

Hard drive capacity has very little to do with weight. The newer drives have a higher data density, so they'll weigh about the same as the older drives.

Yeah, but when you start adding music to your iPod it starts getting really heavy really fast. I mean, 40GB of music is heavy!

A FW800 device can connect (via an adapter) to a FW400 device. The two devices will talk at 400, of course. All new PowerBooks include the FW800-400 adapter (to make the FW800 plug a FW400 plug), and I'd suspect Apple would throw the same adapter into a FW800-equipped iPod's box too.

This is true whether Device A is an iPod or a Mac or a video camera, and the same with Device B (there's no fixed orientation to FW as with USB).

I don’t know if this has been talked about lately, but what ever happened to those links posted to the apple site with those engraved Tony hawk, Madonna, no doubt and beck ipods ?

what about an analog audio in?

That's the only reason I don't have an ipod yet... It would make it a great tool for musicians and audio enthusiasts. And Apple is supposed to be encouraging creativity (imovie... idvd... iphoto...), so c'mon :)

even better: what about a line input and a mic input, like most of the MDs have...

5 gigger going

Have just come across the post below in the *cough* thinksecret *cough* forum.

Have just been told that Apple Distributors in OZ have been told to take the 5Gb iPod off their product lists and stop advertising the model.:D

Posted this on AI...just though I'd keep ya in the loop too.

I've just tried to log into the Apple Store to check my order for a 20 gig iPod and this is what I get:-

Did not receive any response from application. It is possible that the application does not exist, or that the requested url is incorrect.

Am I turning into a conspiracy theorist like the rest of you? or is it just something and nothing?

Why do I have to wait all day for an announcement it's Tuesday already here so just tell me now Apple.

Doesn't that just piss you off. Some people are never happy:mad:

Damn...

The Apple store is back up, no new iPods. Only new iMacs were released (curious, no FW800).

And I had my MasterCard all out and ready to go.

Now what?

Really? You're still holidng out hope?

I hope your right but I'm afraid I can't be as optimistic.

Apple releasing new products three weeks in a row and all of this just a month after MacWorld? Have they ever done this before?

The only hope I hold is perhaps they're revamping their entire product line with price drops and some enhances with hopes of pulling more of the Switchers market. Think Secret reports that Apple had a difficult time this holiday season with people walking in with ads from Dell and Gateway showing them the low prices and trying to compare the two systems.

I hope your right, I'm just not sure how much more of this I can take.

Big is not better. Big is predictable. Apple can bring out a bigger capacity iPod but the experience would not be much different than what the current generation iPods provide.

MP4 offers many improvements over its predecessor, namely improved quality and efficiency. If Apple updates the iPod's firmware with MP4 functionality it will mean users will have space for more media than they do now.

As for the video, sometime during mid-2003 Intel will be selling a portable video player. Marketing-wise, if you were Apple would you want to follow in Intel's steps or would you sit it out and see how they do with it first?

Anyway, Apple is always pushing FireWire and QuickTime. vPod or whatever would be a convenient way to combine the two and take on Windows Media Player and USB. Innovation.

When I originally made my order back in December for my 15"Pb and Ipod through the employee store, everything kept getting delayed and delayed. Then when the 17" came out, they gave me the option to upgrade or they would ship the 15" right away.
I opted for the upgrade.. Now, my Ipod is doing the same thing, It was supposed to ship the 31st (when Ilife was sceduled to com out), then it was mysteriously delayed again..

I'm looking to get an ipod and 40gb would be perfect, i currently have 32.7 gb of mp3s and growing, i would hat to have to choose which ones i wanted to listen to or not, this way its so much easier, jsut sync em all!
