can it play the games that apple has on the itunes store ? that'd be smart.
Who cares about africa, it's a lost cause anyway, and the best help they can get is no help. They blame the western world anyway for all the crap that they are in ! In spite of billions and billions of dollars of aid over decades after decades, Africa, generally (it's a big continent!), regresses. Sad but true.
Anyhow, it's a nobel, albeit useless, move by Apple. It looks cute. It's all marketing.

Those donations aren't going to Africa. They're going to help provide drugs that help prolong the life of people with AIDS. I can guarantee Africa would be in better shape if there weren't such a huge percent of the population with AIDS. Think of all the orphans growing up with AIDS, whose parents have died of AIDS. I'm the least politically correct person I know, and I would never say such a callous thing. If you don't want Africa to get monetary aid that's a different matter and may be a correct view, but saying we should ignore an entire continent and choose not to help people with a disease is a different matter.
and why is it that in Africa such a huge % of the population has AIDS ??? think guys, think. It ain't about AIDS. I've got nothing against compassion or pity, but trust me, it solves no real problem. It makes some feel better, that, I understand. But that is all.
Anyway, I have to stop this since it's got nothing to do really with this thread or this place at all !
Well, antiretrovirals do actually significantly reduce the vertical transmission of HIV from infected pregnant women to their unborn children, so they are an important means of prevention of AIDS in the next generation of Africans.Grumble. I've resisted saying it until now, but I am dissapointed by RED. I don't mind the potential for self-satified trendyness, like armstrong bracelets. I don't mind the buisness plan for companies, getting good publicity and a competitive advantage for less money than other routes to the same. And I certainly don't mind charity. In fact, I think this scheme is brilliant, absolutely fantastic. Everybody benefits in a truly easy way to help the world.
But there's always a but, isn't there. It is absolutely ludicrous to talk about AIDS and not talk about prevention. It's a terminal disease, no matter what the medication (and they aren't funding looking for a cure) -- and don't try to help people not get it? It's obvious why Product RED takes a treatment stance -- AIDS is an STI, and prevention means talking about sex, and some people are greatly offended by this, even when it means saving lives. Which, of course, makes for poor business.
To let a few dogmatic extremists destroy efforts to solve one of the largest problems in the history of the human race is spineless and abhorrant.
Sadly, if apple releases a new RED product tomorrow we will not be able to talk with virtue about helping the destitute, but will find that the greatest meaning will probably be to apple's bottom line. Sure, antiretrovirals increase quality of life, but with the miniscule contributions, the cost of the drugs, the ability of the virus to adapt to the drugs, and most importantly, the complete lack of any reduction in infection rate, but in fact an increase with antiretrovirals, the main effect outside of apple's bottom line will be to give people the false impression that they have helped solve a tragic problem.

I don't get it? Are you a conspiracy theorist?
but the question remains: do these updated pro-african versions play games !?!

No, the (Product) RED charity doesn't yet exist down here, I'm hoping Bono decides to launch it whilst he's here touring with U2 but so far no word.
So, no charity = no RED iPod nano.

Well, I bought an 8GB one in Manhattan yesterday. I <3 it. I've always wanted a red iPod, ever since I bought my mini years ago.
