Yes WD My Cloud EX2 can and it works well - I just think the main issue are all the complaints about M2 performance and I'm happy with the basic M2 Mac mini with 512GB, but I would have been pissed off if I had bought the 256GB version with half SSD speed just to save USD 200, I realize I don't get a 16GB Pro, but Apple could have been up front what you get, or not get..
But even at half speed it would be able to write at 100-125MB/s of GigE, right?

I find it odd that the main use case for faster SSD (it appears, based on comments here) is swapping. But you guarantee that you will swap more (relative to having 16GB of RAM) by having "only" 8GB of RAM, thus you will see the issue more.

And because even the fastest SSD is hundreds to thousands of times slower than RAM, whether the SSD is 1500MB/s or 3000MB/s, you'll still see the slowdown far worse than if you had the RAM required during the VM swap event.

But you didn't buy that RAM.....?

#confused

Correct on Mac Mini M2 8GB Ram 512GB HDD, I didn't measure the swapping, but I just tried it in real world testing and it didn't cause any problems probably due to the NAS HDD limitations.

As I mentioned I don't expect it to match a 16GB RAM or M2 Pro performance.

I hope you will have the opportunity to give it a try in the near future, nice weekend.

Could see this coming from a mile away considering that Apple also did this with the base M2 MacBook Pro, too

Not much of a power user per say, so still perfectly happy with my M1 Mac Mini

Sooo would I be better getting a 1TB basic mac mini M2 or a pro 512? and given Safari has now killed off my intel mini with the numerous OS upgrades swallowing ram what future proofing do I need now? Should I just wait for intels next generation of chips and just move over finally?

Add to the mix the Costco $1700 studio max. Costco also provides an additional year warranty. Its a nice machine

Unfortunately I'm in the UK and apple is already marking up UK prices to 650pounds for the basic model, criminal almost given it's 1.24 dollar to the pound. My main worry is future Mac OS's making all of these new macs redundant in a year or so with the next OS 'upgrade'

It's about a £60 max difference. Sure it's still more but hardly criminal.

A $599 dollar mac should theoretically cost 455 pound based on the exchange rate so that's 200 pound or $250 - that's a return flight to America money

$599 today is about £483. The cost in the UK store is £540 one less the other is a difference of £57.

Ok, sorry you don't get it, my fault...

In the USA sales tax varies from state to state. The price of $599 (£483) is what Apple is charging. Only when they know which state you are in are they then able to add the correct sales tax. $599 is not what they will pay.

In the UK we pay 20% VAT on everything so it is already added.

Sales Tax / VAT are not Apples' issue, they are just adding tax they are told to add.

Look at your screenshot above, £649 includes £109 in VAT, subtract one from the other to get £540.

Which for me would mean a free trip to America at no extra cost, to visit Cupertino maybe and see what I could steal back?

Use a lighter web browser, like Opera or DDG, and downgrade the Mac OS if it feels slow to you.

You're not really selling me a new Mac Mini very well... This sounds like you were made redundant from intel in the 1990's

What would you buy, rather than the $499 m2 mini?

Apple's refurbs are always a smart deal. I've bought a couple in the past and the quality is great. If having the latest and greatest isn't important to the buyer, something like a Mac Mini M1 refurb would give you more for your money. That's $639. The equivalent RAM/storage M2 Mini is $799.

But the question is against the M2 mini at $499. Even used M1 Minis are about that much around here (still!), I can see no reason to not get the latest, new, at that price.
