Here is a simple solution Apple could do - touch and hold on blank space - app icons go into move/delete state. Tap and hold on icon - 3d touch shortcut menu. Problem solved for the SE/iPhone 6/6+/5s/5.

tap-and-hold on blank space to enter wiggle mode? thats not a simple solution at all -- it would wipe out nearly a decade of tap-and-hold on app icons to enter wiggle mode.

this isn't an essential feature. its not a big deal if you don't have it on your SE or old phone. its certainly not worth changing the entire way wiggle mode works for everybody else.

How about every iPad in existence? Like the recent "Pros" that will immediately become morally obsolete once the new amazing only apple can make such awesome wow - "the new iPad Pro Plus with 3D touch extreme HD" are introduced.

You did a great job describing how the consumer technology market has worked since the beginning of consumer technology.

Oh I see what you are saying, people who don't have a feature because they bought a phone without it can't use said feature? Wow I guess that's right.

On a similar note did you know that if you buy a car without a rear view camera you can't use a rear view camera to backup? Hm, makes you think what these corporations are up to.

> Argues with using hardware as your argument

There is nothing complicated here. If Apple wanted to, it could substitute a deep press for the same functions as those for the 3d touch. While I think that these nuance features should stay exclusive to the S models, I do think that the more core functions should be available on both platforms. Especially since the SE doesn't have a 3D touch.

Disappointed the latest iPad can't do that. This probably means Apple will release an iPad with 3D touch as a major feature to get people to upgrade.

New iPad Pro = iPad Pro 12.9 features (4 GB Ram, Fast Charging) + iPad Pro 9.7 features (screen, camera) + 3D touch

"Can't Innovate my ass".

What gives you the right to deem 3D Touch for shortcuts only? Before 3D Touch there was no 3D Touch, so Apple can implement it whatever way they see fit.

Of course Apple can implement it however they see fit. However, it is my opinion that it's bad UI design to bury functions in what should be a shortcut, especially when there are alternative solutions. It would be the equivalent of putting options in OS X exclusively in right-click menus. I thought that Apple considered 3D Touch the iOS equivalent of a right click, but apparently that is not true.

Seriously, the sense of entitlement today is out of control.

These are the little simple ergonomics of a user experience that I like about Apple.
I’d prefer the one where I could ignore a particular update and don’t get a permanent red badge on my **** phone all the time, as I don’t want to lose functionality.
Oh but no, that we can’t do.

Slightly related - I've noticed that 3D-touching the App Store icon no longer has an "Update Apps" option that it has in iOS9. Seems an odd thing to remove, but guess it may well return in later betas.

If it didn't take an eternity already to download a teeny tiny app from their App Store, we wouldn't need a feature like this.

Instead of PRIORTIZE, how about a TURBO or NITROUS button to expedite the download? How about a Fast & Furious option! :)

Can you tell me how much disk space and CPU usage this "prioritize downloads" feature uses? I didn't think it would be resource intensive at all, but you seem to have insider information.
I'm saying Apple should avoid features that require users to manage things in the OS. There are ways to make iOS be smart about what get prioritized without users having to get into that intricate level of control. I was likening managing functions to managing disk storage. They are both unnecessary.

I would thing fans who want iOS to be more like android would be jumping for joy.
Who on earth wants iOS to become Android? Not i.

Another useless feature. Brink back Contact favorites from the multi-task window. iOS keeps getting worse and worse.

Omg... during my preschool days I drew something like this in my notebook, I dont know where I kept that. :)

Morally obsolete?

My iPad Pro will be good for YEARS from now. Apple can introduce all the new stuff they want but it doesn't mean that my iPad is now not capable of doing the things I bought it for. Companies introduce new things all the time, are you saying you no longer what that to happen?

The thing is, this 'feature' is for the user.

If I have 10 apps updating, Apple has no way of knowing what I want to be done first at that moment in time so I can do what i want to do faster. This is just an option for the user to say, download this first please so I can finish what I want to finish.

I am sure APple already prioritizes app downloads as it is

So my 2015 Car is obsolete because the 2016 one has a better engine, backup camera, lane departure notifications etc?

Because those multiple app update mornings can add up to 30 seconds to your busy day...?

When restoring a device from an iCloud backup or transitioning to a new device. Prioritizing app installs is often necessary.

Or... your iDevice could actually check some stats, and use its built in smarts, which apps are used more frequently, which app is used at a given time of the day, and sort the priority of the downloads in a more useful order. You don't have to think about it, you don't have to force 3d touch anything, it just works.

What Apple has just introduced is the equivalent of a right click, Windows style, with some options that are really unnecessary and could be resolved with a little more artificial intelligence.

Everyone who's saying "obviously this won't work if you don't have 3d touch" is missing the point

The issue is that Apple is taking features which could be implemented any number of ways and choosing to make it dependent on 3d touch. Prioritizing downloads could just as easily be done in the actual list of apps in the App Store (which seems like a better place anyway because you're looking at a list of apps that are downloading rather than on the home-screen where you have randomly scattered icons across pages).

People are simply pointing out that Apple's choices seem to be guided more by tying features to needed hardware than what would make the best UI design.

I admit I was mumbling, but my point was about fragmentation. 3D touch only works on some products. I don't believe for a second a company the size and with resources of Apple couldn't engineer 3D touch in the recent iPad Pros (introduced after 6s/6s Plus). Rather, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Timmy ordered to hold something back, so that they can introduce it later and obsolete previous devices (morally, you will be increasingly reminded of that by missing out of new software features). Currently as a result - Apple customer owning the latest Apple devices CAN NOT operate them in the same manner. Device naming is confusing, functionality is fragmented, specs are the bare minimum they can get away with and everything is made with planned obsolescence in mind. Like only Apple can.

PS - I personally really wanted a bigger iPad and pencil/stylus support, but I decided to hold off because from day 1 I felt the 12" iPad was intentionally gimped. The soon after released better specced 10" Pro confirmed that (but even that didn't have 3D touch). So I keep waiting, and yes, my iPad Air 2 still works.

He is saying there could be a method for people that bought the newest iPhone, the iPhone SE. As a developer I hate that Apple put out the SE without 3D touch, because now 3D touch will never be an integral part of the UX, at least until the SE is out of circulation (Likely another two years.)

Here is a simple solution Apple could do - touch and hold on blank space - app icons go into move/delete state. Tap and hold on icon - 3d touch shortcut menu. Problem solved for the SE/iPhone 6/6+/5s/5.

Alright, give me a solution. If you don't have 3D Touch, how can you prioritize app downloads? If you hold down on an app icon without 3D Touch, the apps wiggle so you can move them so that wouldn't work out.

Prioritizing app downloads has been a non-3D touch feature for years -- since at least iOS 4 in 2010.

https://support.apple.com/kb/ph12521

Progress bars appear below Home screen icons for apps being downloaded.

To make an app a priority for downloading, tap its icon.

maybe you would prefer an android or windows phone where some of these features you are speaking of are possible.
