"Apple will also reportedly withhold 3D Touch from the 4-inch iPhone in order to encourage adoption of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus."

Can we please get away from the idea that huge = better?

Size: "Huge" is a downgrade when it comes to things you are suposed to carry in your pocket..

What?

Hey Apple, a smaller product should not get last-gen hardware just because it's smaller. That's a trend that needs to stop.

Says you and the other 147 people who both want a small phone and actually care what kind of hardware is in the product. It's a smart phone; people care about features, not hardware. Except the tech geeks; and 99% are going for the bigger phones.

You're not a big enough market, amigo.

Hopefully Apple goes with the same A8 found in the iPad Mini 4 and Apple TV 4, which has 2GB of RAM. This would help it run future iOS versions much better.

The A8 itself is a pretty fast chip. I rarely found myself wanting more speed from my iPhone 6 Plus, or even my iPad Mini 2 with the A7. However, what I did want was more RAM to effectively keep things in memory and prevent crashes. I got my first glimpse of that in October 2014 with the iPad Air 2, and now the 6S is everything I ever wanted and then some.

You see, Apple tends to gravitate around certain long-haul processors, like the A5 which was around for a considerable amount of time in devices such as the iPod Touch, the iPad 2 and Mini, and the Apple TV 3. I think the A8 might be that chip going forward. However, when it comes to RAM, the 6th generation iPod Touch has 1GB—so there is an outlier.

It's unfortunate that Apple has decided to leave out features for people who want smaller phones. There's nothing keeping them from putting OIS into the iPhone 6s, which is as thick as the last-gen 6 Plus. I'm willing to pay more to get it. I'm just done with the whole phablet thing after trying the Plus for a year. Just charge the same price for the 4" version as you do for the 4.7" version, as we bought 3.5" and 4" devices for years at that price point! People will still do it because it's more about the preference and not the price. Apple will probably even make extra money on the 4" devices as they use less materials.

My wife and several other people I know (mostly women, but even a couple guys) are still holding on to their iPhone 5 or 5s because they don't want a bigger display. I know personally that my wife doesn't care as much about performance, but it would seem pretty silly to buy her a new iPhone in 2016 that has the same amount of RAM as the iPhone we bought her in 2012—especially if she wants to get another three years of use out of it which I know she will. Does anyone honestly think iOS 12 will run very well with 1GB of RAM? I know iOS 8 ran pretty crap on my 6 Plus with 1GB of RAM, although it does have a much larger display to buffer. But still—all new Apple devices should start at 2GB going forward as a minimum. It's 2016 we're talking about!

If as many people that complained, moaned, cried, and threw major tantrums over rumors of the larger iPhone 6 sizes, actually buy these tiny new phones, it'll be very profitable for Apple.

I hope they do. The rather dismal stock performance over the last year is not a good indicator of things to come.

Why even go through the trouble then. Its basically a 5s with a new casing. Smh.

Simple...they need a model they can offer free on contract and that won't be the 6 and 6+ - that will hurt Apple's precious margins (if you are wondering - those models would be good enough for too many people)

Next year, the only models that make sense for Apple are:

iPhone 7,7+
Iphone 6s,6s+
iPhone 4" (good enough to up sell to next models)

I can't convince my mother to upgrade from my old 4s as the newer phones are all too big to fit in the pockets of Ladies trousers/pants.

Yes I see many like this. Many may upgrade their 4s if Apple can offer an inexpensive small iPhone with A8 + Apple Pay. They could use for another 3-4 years.

Could these buyers also get a refurbished watch, while in the store? New watches may arrive at that time.

I'll probably wait for the "S" version of this before I replace my 5S. To be honest I would just to have a better camera, the live photos capability along with Apple Pay (I am assuming the rest of the Canadian banks and Moneris terminals will support it by the time it is released).

I'm not sold on 3D Touch myself. As far as A8 or A9 I am okay with either one since I don't do any intensive computing on the device, as long as there no perceptible lag.

May as well get an iPhone 5s.

The jump from the A7 to the A8 is not very significant, as seen in real-world performance and benchmarks.

That is if it has 1GB of RAM.

snip...Annoying that this is viewed as an entry-level model rather that something that can rival a current 6S, but that actually fits in one's pocket/doesn't slip out of one's hands when trying to hold it.
Does the size actually dictate whether it will slip out of one's hand?
It seems there are any number of threads here iPhones slipping out of one's hand prior to iPhone 6/6+/6S/6S+.
You could attribute "slipping out of one's" hand more to personal clumsiness and the inability to pay attention.

very disappointing. why should screen size dictate features or "premium" product status? I want a phone-sized iPhone instead of the gargantuan iPhone 6 I have now. I would gladly pay a premium for a top line iPhone with a 4" screen (preferable 16:10 aspect ratio instead of 16:9, but that's another issue). And by premium, I mean I'd pay MORE than the cost of an iPhone 6s. Why assume the market for a 4" device is somehow a "budget" market??
