Apple is planning to introduce a new 4K-compatible Apple TV at tomorrow's event, and the revamped fifth-generation set-top box could also include a redesigned Siri Remote that features haptic feedback.

Developer Guilherme Rambo dug into leaked golden master software that was released over the weekend and found "actuator calibration" and "force calibration" references, suggesting haptic feedback for the remote.

There's been little mention of design changes to the upcoming Apple TV, so it's not clear if the new Siri Remote will feature the same look and feel as the remote for the fourth-generation Apple TV or if there will be other design changes included alongside haptic feedback.

Haptic feedback is designed to provide tactile feedback when interacting with a device, letting users know a press or tap has been registered by the user interface. Apple embraced haptic feedback as a main UI element in the iPhone with the introduction of the Taptic Engine in 2015, but haptic feedback has been used in Macs and iOS devices for years.

The Siri Remote could adopt an iPhone-style Taptic Engine to provide touch-based feedback when activating Siri, browsing through menus, accessing the Home screen, and more.

According to earlier leaks, Apple is planning to call its fifth-generation Apple TV the "Apple TV 4K." The device features a three-core A10X Fusion chip and 3GB RAM. It will render natively at 2160p, support a variety of color formats including HDR10 and Dolby Vision, and it will require a 15Mb/s internet connection for 4K streaming.

Haptic feedback would be great, but it's even more important that the device allow third-party remotes to control every aspect of the Apple TV. Many, many ATV users use universal remotes, and this is probably even more true for those who would buy a 4K device.

This would be a very welcomed update. The user interface is still pretty lame. It takes ages to do anything and more importantly, it doesn't feel right. It is my only Apple device that I rarely use.
I think that one of the keys is definitely the remote.

You really have to wonder now if Rambo and Steve TS have been contacted by Apple.
I know there are thousands of lines of code to go through but these guys are releasing it somewhat selectively now. Regardless, interesting seeing Apple on the back foot.

Man if Apple find out whoever leaked this iOS GM to MR and 9to5 they're never working in the Valley again.
Maybe, never know the real story but I thought it was a carrier that mistskenly leaked out the link to someone outside of Apple and then that person passed it on.

I use my Xbox one.
Me too but I've notice the apps on the Xbox just kind of suck..Netflix last i checked did not offer Dolby vision for its movies that have it..my LG OLED TV Netflix and amazon app has been great! Here's to hoping Apple TV 4k will be the device It should have been two years ago! and SPECTRUM CABLE PLEASE CREATE A GREAT APP FOR THE APPLE TV!

Maybe Scott Forstall has a mole inside Apple who released the GM info, so he's getting back at Tim for being fired....we might never know;)

I use my Apple TV and the DirecTV Now app and I hate the current remote. If I'm watching something and need to pick up the remote to move it (sometimes sitting on the couch next to me and making room for my wife) or to adjust the volume too many times my finger lightly brushes the touch area and the channel changes. Having a dedicated "previous" or "last channel" button to flip quickly between 2 channels is something that is missing too. Hopefully if they have a redesigned remote it addresses these two issues.

Seems the Apple TV is ticking all the boxes this time around. Hopefully the reason has nothing to do with the iPhone's tenth anniversary.

I like my Apple TV but the remote is easily the worst thing about it and the ultimate example of something Steve would hate if he were still with us. It's such a poor design, incredibly unintuitive. Let's hope they got it right with the new one.

To be honest it was surprising that they didn’t implement it on the 1st gen Siri remote, it should be good, hopefully a tweaked design as well.

I have three 4th generation Apple TVs and I think they work flawlessly, so I don't see a need to upgrade. I don't have 4K TVs and don't see myself upgrading anytime soon, so I don't see the point. Maybe one day in the future.

It will be interesting to see what the new remote looks like.
Hopefully it'll be easier to hold and harder to lose!
