How much of the US will be eliminated by that bandwidth requirement?
I don't know for sure, but probably not as much as you might think, if you are referring to population and not a "coverage" map.

The average broadband speed in the US is more than double what Netflix recommends for their 4K streaming.

The people that might be SOL will most likely be located in rural areas, as their average bandwidth is much lower than the US average.

Apple TV was early enough on the scene that it could have lead the category the whole way, but they fell behind and allowed others to shape and expand the market. Even <gulp> Comcast re-invented itself with Xfinity, and they've done a really good job with it. </gulp> Now with Disney developing its own streaming service, this is probably Apple's last chance to remain competitive.

Am I foolish to think maybe they'll add back the optical audio port in so I can stream music to my vintage stereo set-up?

This is true. I have a Shield and very much like it. But the equivalent apps between the 2 are infinitely better on ATV. Especially the MLB At Bat. It isn’t even close.

It’s much better (performance-wise) since the 5.2 update. But that box freezes and crashes more times in a month than in the last year total I had the ATV. The thing just isn’t as refined as it should be relative to how smooth the ATV is.

It should be better than it actually is.

I do think the quality of the streams and getting in and out of apps on the shield and roku are a LOT better than the ATV. Like I've said before I really don't like the ATV 4 and especially not since the iOS 10 update. But I'm hoping the new box fixes all those issues.

I would guess that it will not be added back, but there are plenty of cheap HDMI to HDMI/optical audio adapters that will enable you to do what you wanted to do.
