I gave up with Apple TV. The only Apple product I hate, it's pathetic and the apps suck on it. I use Nvidia Shield and it is LOADS better.

I bought a Shield to run Plex Server on it... I had to return it... the interface is such a POS - I don't know how anyone can stand Android on anything larger than a phone.

The AppleTV is 50x easier on the eyes, and just as fast.

So angry about something that really doesn't mean anything. You really think they are going to spend the money to try to prosecute someone over a leak?

Sorry, but it means a lot, especially to Apple, but also for lots and lots of people who enjoy being surprised by Apple events. If I have to spell it out, that fact is evidence that you wouldn't understand it anyway. And yes I do believe they will go nuclear on this person if/once they find him/her. That's the only deterrent that has a chance to prevent future leaks like this from deflating the unveiling events. But, once again, if you don't understand why the leak is a big deal, discussing this would be futile.

The complaints about the remote are amusing. Some people calling it too complex, some calling it too minimalist. lol

I have few complaints about the current remote, but I will say I'm going to laugh if Apple tries to charge more than $150 for this new Apple TV model because of "haptics".

I like the current remote, too. It can be a tad sensitive, but I love the trackpad. Also, my Logitech Harmony universal remote works with the Apple TV.

Ive's team ignored usability in favor of aesthetics when they conceived the 4th Gen ATV remote.

The form is symmetrical to a fault; you can't determine its orientation without looking. Inevitably, it happens to be upside down when I hold it. The materials don't offer a clue; the touchpad feels similar to the casing. And who can read the button labels in a darkened room?

I had to wrap white duct tape around the bottom half to improve the tactile feedback. Lighted buttons would be more useful than haptic feedback.

Playstation Vue is hilarious. That's its own disaster of an interface all by itself. I really love trying to scroll through the guide during peak times when my network slows down. You have to wait for the next segment of the guide to load, but there's a timeout on the guide that makes it fade away while its loading.

Yes, definitely thinking of trying out DirectTV but I'm sure it has its own challenges.

I like the current remote, too. It can be a tad sensitive, but I love the trackpad.

My own guess: the difference between the ATV4 controller and the ATV5 controller will be similar to the G1/G2 versions of the Magic Trackpad. I liked the G1, but the G2 provided refinements that improved the overall experience, and not just because of haptics.

I really hope they find whoever leaked those GMs. Find them and treat their leaking faces to a very severe lawsuit.

Why? Other than spoiling a big reveal, what does it matter? Do you think it has any material impact on sales? It isn't worth the cost of trying to investigate and prosecute. Now if it was source code, I would agree.

The remote will be a big part of my decision on this. My roku 4K works great. I don't need to add an Apple TV. But with 4K Apple now has me interested. But the current remote is terrible. I'd really like a full keyboard on there.

We're cord cutters and get all our TV though two Apple TVs and love them for the most part. That remote is an utter disgrace to UX though. There's basically nothing right about it.

1) Nearly impossible to tell which way it's facing without looking. Check
2) Horribly sensitive* touchpad that you're constantly touching unintentionally because of 1). Check
3) *actually only in some apps. In others it's like wrestling a bear. (I'm looking at you, Playstation Vue). Check
4) The perfect size for falling in the cracks of a couch. Check

It's horrible in every aspect.

Easy solution for number 1: purchase the wristband.

Completely untrue!!!!

I have both. Both work well. But frankly, the apps actually load a bit faster on the Apple TV. They are much easier to rearrange on the apple tv. The shield will occasionally freeze. The apple TV never does.
The new apple tv will support HRD10 and Dolby Vision. The Shield does NOT support Dolby Vision and probably never will.

Overall I do like the AppleTV remote; it's the only remote I've ever had that my wife actually likes and doesn't complain about 24/7. Regarding the AppleTV, here are a few things that bug me about it:

1. Lame selection of games. Apple needs to include a controller to show they're serious about games.
2. When I shut down the AppleTV, it turns off my TV but not my home theater receiver. :(
3. I like how the remote is minimalistic, however, it would be nice to have a mute button on it as well.
4. I agree with the critique that it's hard to determine the orientation of the remote; it is hard to grab it in the dark without messing things up.

Yes, I do think it has the potential to influence negatively in iPhone sales. It deflates the unveiling event, which begets more "we knew that already" articles in the media, which contributes to more people saying "meh", which can divert what otherwise would be sales (and if not divert, at least postpone said sales). If Apple sold phones by the thousands or even tens of thousands, that would be negligible. But we're talking tens of millions on the end-of-year quarter, and a negative blip on the sales graph means a lot of money. Also, and perhaps more important, it can have a negative impact on the stock price. This leak is by no means a little thing, and prosecuting the perpetrator is a given, if/once Apple finds them.

One could argue that the experience is second-rate with the touchpad that the UI was designed for.
It has pros and cons. Navigating the menus with the touchpad takes some getting used to, but it's great for scrubbing back and forth in a video, much better than old fashioned fast forward/rewind buttons IMO.

I actually like the remote quite a bit, with the exception of the symmetric design which causes me to pick it up the wrong way around half the time ...

My Apple TV remote wish list.

I wish the remote was:
• Heavier
• Slightly longer
• More ergonomic
• More durable
• Would illumate

I’ve had two of the current remotes shatter. My third one is inside a rubber case now.

Hate picking it up and hold it the wrong way around in the dark!

1. Lame selection of games. Apple needs to include a controller to show they're serious about games.

The game selection during the first year of release was sparse, but I would say it's solid now. Granted, it's nowhere near the iOS App Store, but that's to be expected after only two years. I think they turned some people off with the ATV controller support requirement initially, but have picked up some momentum after revising that and allowing games that were 3rd-party controller only.

ATV4 remote needs to be more than "revamped." The entire inventory needs to be put underneath a heard of stampeding elephants. The existing ATV4 remote + haptic feedback solved none of it's deficiencies. It is not a good example of human factors engineering.

So here is to hoping that it is an all-new remote AND ATV4 is not "starting at..." $199.

I do have one of these on the ATV Remote that I use in the bedroom.

I got mine free from the manufacturer who gave them away here on MacRumors for feedback before going into production. I do think it's a great design and helps solve the heft and which-way-is-up problems of the current remote. Much easier to use in the dark.

I still have to consciously put it on the nightstand when I turn off the TV when going to sleep though....so I don't roll over, accidentally click the trackpad, and then have it turn on my TV in the middle of the night!
