Do you guys think I should get a 64GB Air 2 for $499 instead of this new pro? Honestly don't do anything too fancy on my iPad. Was wanting to get the latest and greatest but I can save $100 for double the storage and the Air 2 is still an amazing iPad.

Lets get the fact right.

16blvyv.jpg

It is a 4G ram, 128GB SSD Windows tablet for $449. For this new ipad, if the rumor is correct, they are pricing that at $599 for 4G ram(better not 2G or this product is a failure) + 32GB SSD. This is outrageous. I don't need ipad pro mini. I just need a ipad air 3 with cpu upgrade and stuff. I refuse to pay $499 to buy ipad air 2 because it's already a 2 year old product, which any brand out there offer better option, better hardware spec for less price.

If the rumor is true, my next tablet will be Surface 3 or a better spec Android. Period.

And one more thing, Apple only having 32G and 128G version is stupid. They might get away with it using this practice on iphone due to the high demand, having the same practice on ipad will be a failure. I will not pay $200 bucks more just because I need more than 32G on a tablet.

Relative doesn't mean the exact same. Apple doesn't offer a tablet with full fledged Mac OS X. Nor do they work with touchscreen full OS. They just use iOS. iOS does the basic necessities. Sure, competitors are cheaper and provide "better value," but Apple's prices are known to be higher. The Surface 3 is on frequent sales. Notice how that price is $150 off? And no, the Surface 3 uses flash storage, not a SSD. $599 to $599 is pretty equal price wise. I sold my iPad months ago. It's a toy relatively to tablets out on the market. Plus, why buy a Surface 3 when the Surface 4 comes out in May or at least around that time since its due for a refresh?

I don't think it's silly for someone to be disappointed or worry about the future trajectory of pricing. Buying the products also requires a certain level of commitment to buying apps, services, and gradually putting a substantial amount of data in there.

So if you are concerned pricing might be starting to get of reach for you, do you (for example) really want to keep putting more and photos into the Photos app with cloud storage? Sure there are ways to get your data out, but it's not going to be particularly clean or easy. The more Apple-only centric stuff you commit to, the harder it gets to transition away in future.

My initial thoughts were the rumored iPad Pro pricing is all fine and it's perfectly reasonable. But I have to admit there have been some really interesting points made in among all the whining from both sides.

My biggest concern as an iPad Pro owner is the state of the App Store. These new iPads have awesome power and capabilities. But devs aren't going to waste their time building amazing apps if they can only charge a few bucks for them and still only reach a limited iPad audience with them. And consumers aren't going to pay higher pro prices without proper trials or future upgrade pricing discounts.

Only this week there's been some fascinating conversations among indie devs that maybe it's time for them to back to the Mac for development. Jason Snell just added to the conversation with an article on Macworld. People on Mac are willing to pay much higher prices for quality software, they can do trials, upgrade pricing, and there is significantly less competion. Yes the market is much smaller overall when measured against iOS as a whole, but people are coming around to the idea the Mac might be the only way to make a good living moving forward with sustainable pricing.

So far Phil Schiller didn't really improve the App Stores. Imo they need a complete overhaul with a better way to pay for upgrades, a better discoverability, a developer incentive for universal apps and a way more radical featured section. It is beyond me why Apple promotes Apps, that often don't support all the newest features like useful Splitview, Slideover, PiP. And this isn't only an iPad problem. Where are the apps with useful 3D Touch (Peek and Pop), TV/watchOS support, Touch ID, Spotlight, iCloud Keychain features, photo extensions, 6 (S) Plus landscape mode and so on? I really want Apple to be more rigid about those things. It is ridiculous that popular apps like Paypal didn't adapt to the 6/Plus screen size for over a year or that certain popular apps aren't even offering an iPad version.

The problem with the desktop class software isn't only the app store. Looking at the iOS 9 iPP home screen, i would say that something more tablet specific like PadOS is needed. Try to run two instances of word, try to save a video from the internet or try to handle 4K video material in a meaningful manner. Cumbersome or impossible, needs workaround and isn't close to a laptop/desktop experience. The pro moniker didn't change the inherent shortcomings. As you and others have remarked the software is lagging behind it's hardware at this point. And Apple needs to tackle this and the store issues to encourage more and more developers to make more laptop/desktop class software.

I have an Air 2 64gb and I paid less than that for a new one a year ago. If you can survive with 32gb, you get a lot for your money with the pro version and will a better long term device.

Thanks for the answer. I guess I'll wait till tomorrow to see what the specs of the new iPad is going to be.

Cars increase in price every year and generation. Why the big fuss about a $55 price increase since the original iPad considering inflation?

Obviously the RUMOURED price increase isn't welcomed by many people, why would it? I mean no one likes prices going up for anything. I don't like it but I'll still be buying this new iPad because I feel I need an upgrade and in all of these years the price has remained consistent around the same price until now.

So it's going up by $100, not bad in like 6 years if you ask me, considering the features, etc that we will be getting. Yes you could argue the features shouldn't increase the price as they never have before and I'd agree with you. I think it's more of the current economy and due to the price of the 12.9" Pro they don't want a huge gap of like $300 between it and this new iPad. Sure they could put the price down on the 12.9" Pro and keep this new iPad at the usual prices but as others have said, the amount of time between people upgrading their iPads has increased which means if Apple drop the price of the 12.9" Pro then their margins go down. They want as much profit as they can get seeing as they know most people who buy this won't be buying a new iPad for several years.

On another note, can't wait for this iPad! Mainly looking forward to the Touch ID (It better be the 2nd Gen!) and performance increase coming from the original Air by the A9X with (hopefully) 4gb RAM. I usually get the 64gb variant of iPad's but looks like I've got a tough decision if it's only 32 or 128gb options.

Actually, the honda accord starting price decreased a few hundred dollars in 2015. and the price increased only .0045% in 2016. So, for Apple to add the usual new features and a 20% price increase is abnormal - comparatively speaking.

Relatively it isn' t a price increase of 20%. If we are going to talk in percentages anyway . It has an increase of 100% against the iPad Air 2 in storage: 16gb vs 32gb.
And about that: iPad 2 32gb, iPad 3 32gb , iPad 4 32gb and iPad air 1 32 gb were released at 599us.For the 64gb they charged 699
So with the air 2 you got a break for 64gb at 599. Otherwise it has always been 599 for 32gb.
So the 2014 decrease of 15% should not be normal accordingly to your standards.
And now they corrected it to normal..

They charge you $599 for 32Gb in 2010. Now in 2016 Apple still charge you $599 for 32Gb in 2016 while all other major brand including Microsoft charge you $449 for 128Gb . 32Gb flash storage was expensive in 2010, but it is DIRT CHEAP in 2016 for 32Gb flash storage.

All these technology related gadget the price will go down every single year, or they keep the same price but you get faster speed. It's been like this since..... Intel i386.

I wonder what people with ipp would say about this.

My screen is still bigger?

I really don't see why this would bother an iPad Pro owner. They have a great device with an amazing screen in both resolution and size. 9.7 is just too constricting for me these days.

Yep. Damnit. This pisses me off. I must have cellular support on my iPad. Cannot do without it. 128 GB of storage will never be used by me since I don't store much music, video, or photos on my iPad. Ugh. So I presume that the 128gb model with LTE is going to cost me close to $1000 bucks? No effing way. :(

Yes same with me. I need cellular support as well but I don't need 128GB storage. 32GB storage will be more than enough for me. But now I will be forced to buy the premium 128GB model if I want cellular. That is total BS. If the rumour is true I will be looking at other options.

I was thinking more on the line of "Aww man...i need a newer ipad pro now but i just bought this last year."

Except this might just be a smaller version of what we bought last year. I'd understand if it somehow had the A10X processor or something, but it's basically the same thing I bought with a smaller screen. This is meant for Air owners, not Pro owners.

Could have better camera's and possibly 2nd gen Touch ID. May annoy some current Pro owners.

Yeah it appears so. I guess they want to cover all grounds with this.

Since when does cost alone determine price?

I can't stand all manufacturers charging a surplus for cellular option. I mean, we're talking about portable devices. But with this 32 no LTE to 128 LTE option Apple stands out as always.

I'm waiting for them to call all their products Pro and bump prices for that added sheen. Mac OS X Death Valley Pro, now starting at €99. iTunes Pro, featuring Apple Music Pro and Beats 1 Pro, now €49 per month.

I'm also waiting to see how the iPad line up looks starting tomorrow because what I am reading so far sounds even more confusing than their laptop line up.

I agree. It is total BS that the only way to get LTE cellular is the 128GB model. All storage options should have cellular option. I am hoping the rumours are wrong and you can get cellular support in the 32GB model.
