Wow, classic "post and leave" thought-provoking thread. No single follow-up comment. Fantastic.

Anyway, This M2 Air suits best for people who
1. Love the new color
2. Value portability more than (sustained) performance
3. Mentally checked out the notch
4. Enjoy other improvements (camera, better 3.5mm jack, magsafe etc)

I'd suggest people go for other options if
1. Your budget is very tight (go for M1 Air. You won't miss out much)
2. Value (sustained) performance. (Go for M1 Pro or M2 MBP)
3. Don't like the notch.
4. Want your machine to last as long as possible in anticipation of growing hardware demand from software
I would not recommend the M2 MBP unless you love the Touch Bar and hate the notch, but other than that I agree.

Is my understanding correct that the slower SSD speed is only with the base SSD (single chip) versus larger (dual chip) configurations?
The Air is not a dud. It amazes me how so many people on here who are supposed to be more tech savvy than the average Joe on the street , have lost their focus and reasoning.
Yea, agree! It’s an impressive machine actually. How they were able to make something so thin and compact. I have the 512 8gb and so far so good. 6 hrs of you tube yesterday and work no issues at all. Happy camper. It’s just a stunning looking machine frankly. I’d say the nicest one apple has ever come out with.

If it is a dud, still everyone is talking about it. Trending threads:

some other reviews dont tell you things like these
enabling the gpu is a good progress

I picked up a Midnight and am on the fence on whether or not I'll keep it. I love the color and really everything about it, except for one thing. The 13" is for whatever reason difficult for me to get comfortable with. I'm so used to the larger models and having something this small doesn't sit well on my lap, even though I know it would be so much better to take around when I travel. Tough decision because it is a beautiful machine.
That's been an issue with the Mac lineup for as long as I can remember. They should 100% make a 15" MBA, especially with this new design. Its ridiculous that if you want a larger-screened Apple laptop you have no option other than the 16" MBP.

My fellow IT colleagues at work are very anti-Apple (I joke that I’m a member of AA - Apple Anonymous). However, when I recently pulled out my 2016 silver MacBook everyone asked appreciatively “Oooh…what’s that?”. I think perhaps because most people on this forum look at, and think about, Apple products more than most people that we forget the Apple laptops are unique, at least in certain colours (the new ‘midnight’ is debatable! 🙂).

I do wish Apple had come out with some more fun colours though, the four they’ve gone with are pretty conservative and seem more in line with colours they would choose for the Pro phones, for example, rather than the main consumer line.

If one is looking to get the latest, lightest, fastest, affordable MBA then the M2 Air base model (or base model + 512GB SSD) is really a good purchase.

However if you’re thinking of getting the 512GB base model, with 10 cores GPU and start to upgrade the RAM, there might be better options out there especially in the Apple certified refurbished pool of products.

I find it interesting that with M chips, throttling is perfectly ok and acceptable, but when it was happening on Intel chips, everyone whined like the world was going to stop spinning.
That depends on where you are starting from. My (otherwise beloved) Macbook 12" with it's crappy slow m7 processor wasn't exactly a powerhouse to begin with but certainly useable. There is just no room to throttle. Once it does there is no performance left.

The M1/M2 on the other hand is almost as speedy as my i9 16" MBP was. If they throttle by 20-30% they'd still be in say 2018 i5 territory and thus perfectly useable.

4. Want your machine to last as long as possible in anticipation of growing hardware demand from software

The new Air will last as long as any other Apple Laptop currently in their lineup, if not longer.

We have no precedent of Apple Silicon deprecation policy (both hardware and software) from Apple just yet.
Plus cooler silicon generally will last longer than those that runs at 90C all day all night, even if it is within spec.
Not to mention personal situations may get in the way of "planned upgrade" which pushes the machine further down its lifespan.
As such, I remain cautious.

Just more "Apple can do no wrong" in the eyes of many (too many)

It's very difficult to have any objective conversations about Apple around here

I'm contemplating this for songwriting and light mixing. About 8 tracks maximum. 8 GB should be enough with REAPER. I might get a laptop fan if I really need it.

I wish there was another solution other than a mechanical fan, though they never failed on my Pro.

when mine arrives I am going to spend the day exporting 4k video just to piss off the people that say thats a problem.. Ellis likes it and he has the base..

The people claiming that it's a problem probably haven't even done it themselves/don't have one. It's just simple herd mentality. Even the few meaningless videos that I've seen comparing video rendering times, none have been substantial as far as time differences for the average user.

The first post in this thread amounts to quite the perverse interpretation of what Dave Lee had to say :)

It ignores Lee's conclusion at 7:25 of his video: "This is a fantastic device for people looking for something to handle light to moderately demanding work."

It also ignores the comment that Lee pinned at the top of YouTube comments: ""This is an AWESOME device for light work but the M2 chip really does benefit from airflow".

I imagine that the vast majority of the 785,000 people who have seen Lee's review so far came away with a less perverse impression than the original poster.

Looking forward to what Marques Brownlee has to say, presumably tomorrow or Tuesday.

They are comparing it with the pro because in most of Europe they cost the same once you put 16gb/512 specs on the air. I think it’s a fair comparison, and it’s a decision many people are weighing up - which is better value.

I looked at Apple's German site and Norwegian site and the difference is €290 and 2500 NOK (≈€244) when configured with 16Gb of RAM and 512Gb SSD. Not exactly the same.

In the UK using an educational discount the M2 air 16/512 is 1629, and the 14 inch pro is 1708. A difference of 79 pounds. Thats a tiny difference given the better screen etc on the pro. Once you start upgrading the M2 air, its hard to see the value relative to the pro unless you really, really want the thinnest machine.

My guess would be that the Air ends up being a top selling MacBook for Apple, and most of those issues only affect limited subsets of the machines or are only an issue if someone is frequently pushing the machine to its limits (in which case the 14" MBP would have likely been a better choice for them)...

the iMacs have more colours and yet the odd two tone makes me only want the blue or silver. i like the bolder back colour... but the fronts seem bland. odd design choice.

the Air colours at least, while professional and conservative, are more generically appealing.
perhaps they can refresh with new colours next year or six months time?
