do you have evidence of those reviews being 'apple-bought'? and are you saying that sites like cnet, the verge... are giving good reviews because of that? 🤔

what's wrong with the design? it's slim, stylish, minimal, tasteful. but yes! like you, this is just my opinion...
Yeah they are biased at times.

It’s ugly and boxy, long live the wedge.

I actually don't really need the M2 but I've had the M1 MacBook Air since the day it was released and it was always meant to be a temporary solution. It turned out that the M1 MacBook Air fits my needs very well which was a bit of a surprise.
Same here exactly. There was some pain early on while various development dependencies were ported over to Apple Silicon, and then it was like magic.

Pre-Apple-Silicon, the Airs didn’t offer competitive compute power for short/bursty needs, so it meant making a serious tradeoff for portability to do my development workflows on one. Apple Silicon 1000000% changed that, and now any choice other than an Air requires making the more painful tradeoffs considering the little to none I’d gain for making the decision, for my use patterns.

which times? and how did you determine this?

also:

the new air, closed, is a rectangle (like every other laptop, apple or otherwise). open, it's a screen, and a keyboard/trackpad... also like every other laptop on the planet.

the wedge? it's over. but good news! you can still buy the M1 air.

Macbook AIr is the Apple version of a budget laptop where the use case is mostly light to moderate internet searches and casual streaming while lounging by the pool, beach, bedroom, backyard, Starbucks(writing your crappy novel). 2x the cost of equivalent Windows laptop for the same demographic users, exception being slightly more affluent who insist on Apple Cache signaling of status(or wannabe).
Or it's just a cigar is just a cigar as Freud says.

Is my understanding correct that the slower SSD speed is only with the base SSD (single chip) versus larger (dual chip) configurations?

Pfff, whatever. Dual monitors is so 2000s. Ultrawide is the way to go in the 2020s.

I'm drooling over those new WUHD 5120 x 2160 monitors.
"Dual monitors is so 2000's"

I remember a startup company I was working at as IT when I was in my early 20's, every desk had 2 or more monitors, The year? It was 2009!

Those ultrawides are cool, for sure. I'm still running on a Dell U2711 (I used to have 3 of them. Only one survives the madness that is life.) but 3x27" is not so good, Its too much screen. It was nice to play games like that for the short time that I dabbled with it though, Overkill for any sort of Desktop Multitasking.

On the bright side a lot of these are fixable. Don't get the Midnight Blue color. Upgrade the RAM and SSD. Honestly, for a general use, ultra portable laptop, the heat issue doesn't really bother me. So, while there are downside, at least they are avoidable downsides.

Of course once you Upgrade the RAM and the SSD though, this sucker is starting to look a bit too expensive for the general purpose laptop it is supposed to be....

That is why I am recommending the M1 Air or the M1 Pro/Max to all my friends/family. Honestly, I just don't think the value proposition is there for the M2 Air. If it came with better SSD and RAM on the base model yes. But considering you will need to upgrade the SSD to avoid beachballs with common web usage, I just don't see it being a good buy.

i wish there was a 'block whining and ranting posts on macrumors forums' browser extension. altho... i guess there would be nothing to read here (and yes, am including my own posts). 🤣

Seriously? Apple themself advertise dual monitor support with Macbooks and Mac Studio on their website. Two 4k 27" displays are 1.5x the amount of pixels of 5K2K, and usually half the price. The connectivity technology is simply not there yet.

There seems to be a growing list of issues with the new Air and a can’t help but think it’s turning out to be a bit of a dud.

So far we’ve got:
  • Slower SSD speeds in base model
  • Fingerprints everywhere on Midnight colour
  • Heat issues with no fan
  • Aggressive throttling to manage heat issue
  • Anodising on Midnight noticeably chips around the ports
I want to like it but these seem to be quite a few over sights for a mature product. Especially compared with the near universal praise for the Pro it does feel Apple dropped the ball somewhat.
The slower unit is the 256GB unit only. Saying base model is incorrect since there are two starting configuration paths. Heat issues have been largely misreported, as has the throttling.

I’ll tell you what’s a dud. Announcing that the MacBook Air will be available today, July 15th, yet NO STORE in the L.A. area has them. That would have NEVER happened on Steve Jobs’ watch. NEVER
Yes, you were a bit of a dick, but sometimes I really miss you

Yeah, and it has a much better value than the M2 boxy crap. More so now that Apple gimped the boxy MBA at the base level.

I tried one in the store today and didn't find it exciting in any way. It doesn't feel any lighter than the M1 MBA (I can't believe some of the reviewers acting like it was like the weight of a feather or something) and the issue with the display causing eyestrain/headaches remains. It's nice to see the MagSafe back and I'm sure the improved camera will be welcome. No sharp edges all around which is good and that is an improvement over the previous gen too.

The whole weight debacle is just fanboys being fanboys.

I picked up a Midnight and am on the fence on whether or not I'll keep it. I love the color and really everything about it, except for one thing. The 13" is for whatever reason difficult for me to get comfortable with. I'm so used to the larger models and having something this small doesn't sit well on my lap, even though I know it would be so much better to take around when I travel. Tough decision because it is a beautiful machine.

I waited for the Air M2 to come out, but now I'm wondering if it's really worth the premium price. The 16GB/512GB version costs 420 euros more in my country's Online Apple Store compared to the same spec Air M1. If I get the Air M1 from a retailer the savings could be even more. I now really regret that I didn't by the Air M1 last year when it was a couple of hundreds cheaper.

this has the best battery life, the best performance, best speakers, best port selection from any ultrabook
Try to do 8k editing on any intel/amd ultrabook...it will make boom boom, crash even when you force it
And 4k, it takes at least double the time and the battery get down to 0 in 2 hours max while the device is boiling hot for those 2 hours while this M2 it gets hot but just for 10 minutes then when it throttling down it becomes cold , while intel/amd ultrabooks stays hot even when they are throttling like crazy
So people complaining about this M2...they dont get it or they dont know how much performance this M2 Mba has under the hood and how other ultrabooks are wroking. The only candidate to this M2 Mba is, ironic, the M1 Mba

Wow, classic "post and leave" thought-provoking thread. No single follow-up comment. Fantastic.

Anyway, This M2 Air suits best for people who
1. Love the new color
2. Value portability more than (sustained) performance
3. Mentally checked out the notch
4. Enjoy other improvements (camera, better 3.5mm jack, magsafe etc)

I'd suggest people go for other options if
1. Your budget is very tight (go for M1 Air. You won't miss out much)
2. Value (sustained) performance. (Go for M1 Pro or M2 MBP)
3. Don't like the notch.
4. Want your machine to last as long as possible in anticipation of growing hardware demand from software
