“There's no standard way to upgrade the firmware of the ‌‌AirPods‌, with the new firmware installed over-the-air while the ‌AirPods‌ are connected to an iOS device. Putting the ‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌ in the case, connecting the ‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌ to a power source, and then pairing the ‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌ to an iPhone or an iPad should force the update after a short period of time.”
Yeah, after 2 ***** hours the AirPods Pro still shows old firmware version. I will see if leaving it charged overnight could solve the problem.

Confused. Is the sound focused around the TV, or around you and locked into that 'position'?
In this case my iPhone. Best way to describe it is the audio feels like you’re in a cinema and just like the cinema if you turn your head the audio channels don’t move, so you turn your head and the ‘front’ speakers become dominant in the ear closest to your head and side channels become more noticeable too. It’s just full surround but somehow they made these two tiny buds feel like a room filled with speakers.

My AirPods updated and spatial audio is showing up on my iPhone...but not my iPad! (And yes, they’re both on the most recent iOS 14 update.) Anyone have a clue what’s going on here?

I tried it on my iPhone and like it a lot, so now I hope they port it to Apple TV too. Not that I use my AirPods a lot with Apple TV, but when I do I would love to have this feature available.

I did a search of this thread for the word “announce” and I didn’t see anything so hopefully this is not a silly question.

I still have it on my iPhone and iPad Pro

I don't understand this either - have been googling all morning - why emulate sound coming from the screen?!?!?! Isn't that why I'm using headphones? This function description sounds different than the original description about spatial audio being more like surround.

The feature is clearly intended for surround - the emulation is much better at pretending you’re using a proper surround setup if the sound does not follow your head.

But also works for stereo which makes little sense... unless you have some sort of disability or are trying to find your phone. I can imagine visually impaired users putting this to some use.

look a few pages back. it doesn’t work with all iPads. could require new ATV hardware also

The option is no longer there on the iPhone 11 Pro that I’m using. I noticed it because I was missing an icon in control center

Settings-Siri&Search-Announce Messages-Announce messages with Siri

I still see it in my control center options list.

I don't get the feature on my iPad Pro 9.7.

Spatial audio works on my iPhone 8 Plus but doesn’t work on my iPad Pro 10.5”. Once again Apple turns an exciting new feature into a source of irritation. 🤬

Technically my iPad was release 3 months earlier than my iPhone, so I guess Apple can just say that’s the arbitrary cutoff point for compatibility. But does anyone know if there’s a technical requirement the iPad Pro 10.5” (A1701) is missing that would keep spatial audio from working? I know all iPads have accelerometers and gyroscopes, so I don’t see why they are withholding this feature from such a recently release, pro version of their hardware.

Same here. It's available on my iPhone 11 Pro Max but not on my iPad Air 2.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned... does the hardware matter? Some phones don’t support Atmos etc...
So does it only play what the device supports?

A10X vs. A11 with a neural engine. Just a guess.

Edit: I’m wrong. The iPhone 7 is supported with just an A10 Fusion. So an A10X should be adequate too.

What does automatic switching need to work?

my Airpods 2 are on 3A283

When I’m listening to music on iPhone SE and iPad Pro 12,9 1stgen nothing switches

Edit: At least iOS and iPadOS 14 I assume.

iPad Pro 10.5 uses an A10X soc, so it seems Apple has chosen to limit it to newer devices. Is the iPhone XS/XS Max supported? That’s my newest iOS device (and daily iPhone) and I haven’t bothered to install a beta on my primary device.

Will be odd if this feature supports Apple TV in the future. No Apple TV currently has a SOC better than the A10X.

Maybe that’s part of the reason a new one is getting released soon 🤔

Seems like A10 iPhone 7 is supported so something else must be at play for why the iPad Pro 10.5 doesn’t support it.
