The only thing it does right now is take up space. It doesn't have nearly the features that my Sonicwall does. Yes, I do make heavy use of IPSec VPN and the IDS.

I only bought it for Timemachine, nothing more.

I can't return it and I can't get anyone to buy it (unless I sell it for half of what it is worth)

Well then best sell it. That's what it's currently worth 'used'.

Not quite...

Be careful though - recall that a 54 Mbps link doesn't give you throughput of 54 Mbps - really only somewhere around 25 Mbps under 802.11a and more like 23.5 Mbps under 802.11g. So when 802.11n advertises 300 Mbps understand that you'll be getting measured throughput of 150 Mbps in IDEAL conditions (which is rare outside a lab).

Actually 54 Mbps is the signaling speed for 802.11g resulting throughput of about 20 Mbps. The 300 Mbps advertised for 802.11n is throughput (actual payload data) while the signaling speed is above that. So one is right to expect a significant difference in real data speeds.

will this suddenly die in two years like my first airport express did?

I certainly hope not. But I must say, my Airport Express (B/G) still works fine and ordered that one just as it became available mid-2004. It has been in use 24/7 since then. Even though its serial-number is in the "unfortunate" range.

*knock on wood*

I can't beleive no one noticed this. :D

Oddly enough the swiss store still doesn't have the update even though it was originally leaked there! lol.

I know, right? ;) That's really nice. :D I might buy one.

Saw that myself! I actually just placed my order for one. Stinks because I thought I could use my educational discount and get a few bucks off the price...unfortunately, it didn't change the price at all!

I have the new base station. I have 5 express stations set up for airtunes. Has it just been defaulting to 802.11b/g even though I set it for n? Seems to make sense. Why does my wife's vista pc keep bumping our connection?

Yes, you're at G. The thing with all current wireless routers is that the router will work at the speed of the slowest device in the network. So, if you introduce a 802.11b device to your 802.11n network; the network will operate at 802.11b speeds. This means all devices on that network (eg your wife's laptop, your laptop, etc) will work at 802.11b speeds, not 802.11n speeds. The same goes for 802.11g devices on a 802.11n network or 802.11b devices on a 802.11g network.

This is particularly interesting for iPhone users. If you have a 802.11n network at home and you use your iPhone on your home network; it will scale down to 802.11g as the iPhone does not support 802.11n.

The other thing is a difference per country. Countries have different policies on what radio frequency bands may be used for WiFi. As I am moving to Australia in april, I had a look at the policies in Europe / The Netherlands and Australia. Apple describes the channels as follows for the Airport Express:
Channels
* Channels 1-11, 36-48, and 149-165 approved for use in the United States and Canada
* Channels 1-14 and 36-64 approved for use in Japan
* Channels 1-13 and 36-140 approved for use in Europe
* Channels 1-13, 36-64 and 149-165 approved for use in Australia, Hong Kong, and New Zealand

still not up on the uk store! :(

Looks like they only did North America today. I'm sure the rest of the world will happen very soon.

I ordered one from the UK Educational Store anyhow (saves £6) as I assume the delay in shipping is for the new model as the US store now shows 24 hours versus 1 week. If not they'll sort it out.

This is good news. I have been wondering when we would see a refresh.

Oh great. Just what I need, another reason to justify a new MBP purchase! I must resist. :)

Just called Regent Street and they didn't even know it existed (Not great when you have to tell a company what they actually sell)

Safe to assume this will be a US only thing for the foreseeable future :mad::mad:

Really hate it when companies do this.

That's great. I'm sure a lot of people have been waiting for this. For signal strength and range it is great. But if you have a main base station, then the n upgrade really doesn't mean too much for music.

True; but it is great for connecting to a LAN as well... I have a fileserver on my LAN so when I need to copy huge files over I connect to the LAN instead of using WiFi. Also video playback from LAN -> WiFi is not that great as it is lagging. 802.11n may change that.

It's worth it alone for the portability. Take it on the road with you and use it wherever you land.
