Mine didn't find it also until I went to the AirPort Utility. I could have sworn updates use to be found via the overarching "Software Update..."; however, I do recall it taking maybe an extra day after an update was announced.

Anyways, when I was asked about upgrading from 7.1.1 to 7.2.1, I pressed details. There it showed an AirPort Extreme gigabit Ethernet and a fast Ethernet version. Mine was preselected as having the fast Ethernet firmware. My AirPort Extreme is about 6 months old -- has Apple started to make a newer version?

Enlighten me gang.

AirPort Extreme Base Station adds Gigabit Ethernet

By Peter Cohen [August 9, 2007]

Another stealth upgrade from Apple yesterday: Its AirPort Extreme Base Station now features Gigabit Ethernet ports across the board. It’s still priced at $179.99.

The AirPort Extreme Base Station provides users with 802.11n-compatible wireless networking — up to five times faster than 802.11g. It’s also backwards-compatible with 802.11a, b and g networking protocols, so it can be integrated into an existing wireless network topology.

The device features a USB interface to connect a printer or USB 2.0-based hard disk for sharing on the network; it also features three switched Ethernet ports. When the AirPort Extreme Base Station debuted earlier this year, some criticized Apple’s decision to use 10/100baseT Ethernet connectors. Now it appears that Apple has remedied that issue.

All four of the Ethernet ports — the WAN port to connect it to the Internet and the three switched Ethernet ports used to connect wired computers, routers or other network hardware — are all Gigabit Ethernet ports.

I don't suppose there will be a firmward update to certify the 802.11n cards in the MacBook Pro, MacBook, etc. to draft 2.0 spec. Or are they already certified?

Same question here....does the present line of macbooks and macbook pro's going to need an update to work with 802.11n draft 2?

Apple doesn't officially certify their computers with the WiFi alliance or whatever it's called, they only certify their Airport stations. It's assumed the cards in the computers will be updated to comply, but they're technically not certified.

AE to firmware 6.3

When i just updated my Basestation N it also updated my AE to fimware 6.3 , i don't know if i missed that earlier or that it is included in this update that just came out do.

Firmware version 6.3 for Airport Express was released January 3, 2006 along with version 5.7 for Airport Extreme (g).

Updates to the Airport *software* happen through Software Update, as it keeps track of what software is on your computer. Firmware updates have come through Airport Utility every time, as far as I know, as it first searches for what Airport routers are in the area, and then tells you which ones it can upgrade. It could in theory be made part of Software Update, although it could also make it more laggy and error-prone for everyone.

How often both Software Update and Airport Utility check for updates is configurable, I think, hence the occasional extra day.

I'd imagine it would just happen in a driver update at some point, it wouldn't need to update the firmware.

Awesome Update (for Me)

I got the new Sony Ericsson P1i smartphone (no iPhone in Asia) three weeks ago and could not find my AEB, no matter how I configured it (phone and AEB). I knew it was the AEB causing problems. After installing this new FW update for the AEB, I can see it on my phone!!! Awesome! Thanks Apple!!! :D

Upgrade messed up FTP server connections

I have a server running Bulletproof FTP server. I upgraded the firmware and all my FTP connections started dropping when it hit PASV mode. I checked my port mappings and they all appeared fine.

I downgraded back to 7.1.1 and everything returned to normal. I'll be keeping the old firmware for now :(

The firmware update fixed a problem for me where the base station would "lose" my shared USB printer, if the printer was turned off or unplugged. I had to reboot the base station in order for it to find the printer again.

After the update I can turn the printer off and on, and unplug and replug in the printer, and the base station can see it again without rebooting.

This has been broken since the first update (7.1?) for the base station...

I've been having the same problem. It seems to work since updating to this version... Tried printing last night and it worked - tried printing again this morning without rebooting the AEBS and it still worked. How novel.

I updated the firmware a couple hours ago and then couldn't connect to the internet! I restarted and unplugged the base station, but no dice. I had to upload the old firmware to get it working again. Anyone else experiencing this?

I had the same issue, powered down all devices, including cable modem, still no luck. Had to head to work so didn't have much time to troubleshoot.

Yes I had that problem too, once it was installed my network kept getting dropped. I restarted the base station and also restarted the computer and it finally clicked and now its stable. No drops and all the usb hard drives are mounted and available. Just keep restarting the airport and computer till it finally connects is my advice. :apple:

Updated first thing and as soon as it booted up all my connections went down??

AEBS even had a green light stating all was well but if i did a "Base Station Status" check it reported that it couldnt fine and external IP address.

So i reverted back to 7.1.1.

I tried it twice with defult and some profiles, it stopped working for an hour after two hours of playing around.

its only just started working again so i wont upgrade until 7.3 atleast.

Took me ages to get the internet working after I installed the update.

I restarted the AEBS a few times, my modem too, and eventually after 5 minutes it started working.

Not sure what took so long, but seems to be fine now.

Interesting, when I used Software Update to look for updates, it doesn't find any. But when I opened AirPort Utility, it informs me of a new firmware update.

That's because Apple Software Update doesn't know if you are using an Airport Extreme BS or not.

I hope they release an update to put the hard drive to sleep when it is not active. Does anyone here have the same problem as me? My LaCie D2 250GB does not spin down the disk when it is inactive. It makes me not even want to use the Airport Disk feature. I'm worried that it will kill my drive.

That's the other thing that finally works for me now, but you have to "Disconnect All Users" in the "Disks" pane of the AP Utility, then it (or they, in my case) spin(s) down after a couple of minutes. Also, I can now connect any number of drives/printers to the hub built into my MiniStack drive, and it works whether it's switched on or not. All in all, an excellent if overdue update.

This happened to me too, i finally restarted my Mini (as it was the only one connected to the base station at this point) and all went well with the connections.

Tried this ?

loosing network connection

Well this update has really messed up my connection. When coming out of sleep seems to be the worst. The hard drives will disconnect. Then when I use the Airport Disk Utility to try and get them to mount to the desktop it drops my network connection. I see this is a common problem after checking around other forums. How can I go back to the 7.1.1 version? I have tried to find it but haven't had any luck. How did some of you do it?

i dont' think you can go back

go to the utility, select, restore to default settings, and re-set up the whole damn thing, and it should work again..

that's what I had to do anyway....

Just found out how to go back to the previous version
1. Launch Airport Utility (located in /Applications/Utilities)
2. Hold the Option key and choose Check for Updates.... From the AirPort Utility menu,
3. Select firmware version 7.1.1
4. Click Download.
5. Select your base station then choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
6. From the Base Station menu choose Upload Firmware....
7. Select firmware version 7.1.1 and click OK

Just did that and now I am back at the previous 7.1.1

Did anyone have the screen go black when it installed the 7.2? mine did I thought for a moment the computer had crashed.
