iPhone OS, I think I'd be out. I have an iPhone OS and it is OK, but it isn't what I want for the main OS of something like this.

I know that tablet is coming, it has been "coming" for about 3 years now. I have a friend who worked on the graphics chip for it. But there has been some significant problems with the design over the last few years and thus why it has not yet been released. It SHOULD be announced this year, baring any major problems.

I know that he said to me not to buy the first gen because the graphics chip isn't great; but the SECOND gen will be much better. But then again, this is 3 years ago, so I would think that the first gen tablet will have the second gen graphics chip now. :D

awesome, who's the f*ing genius who thought it would look like a giant 1st-gen iphone? clearly from this, and their abuse of perspective and photoshop, the person who made the mockup has absolutely no idea what they're doing.

yes, these things get me angry. but come on, it's one thing to have a crappy-looking microsoft mockup, but i think even the fan-made mockups of non-existent apple products should be held to a higher standard.

Is it just me or is the only difference between macrumors and all these analyst firms is that they get paid a hell of a lot to make up stuff?

I see they're doing mock-ups now too?

haha, it's a good job, if you can get it. ;)

This looks cool, but it needs to run a lot more than iphone apps. Those are apps designed for a 3.5" screen and weak hardware (especially pre-3GS). If you limit a larger, more powerful device to iphone apps you're crippling its potential.

If the design is nothing more than an enlarged iPod Touch, it's fugly and they could do so much better.

If the device runs on the iPhone software, it will have limitations which will not justify the price they will likely ask.

Apple needs to pull their head out of the sand and realize that their customers want a real table PC, and not just a large iPhone/iPod Touch. If that is what this product turns out to be, I will pass on purchasing it.

i just hope its as strong or stronger than an ion plattform

i want to run proper apps on it
use it for work
as a notebook replacement

i have a macpro
but that macbook is just too big and bulky and i hate touchpads and ****** keyboards

he he , that viewing angle on that mockup is about 160* degrees (an important spec for tablets)

Unfortunately, that would rule out TN panels and the alternative is rather pricy I would think.

It certainly would be interesting if they actually attempt a tablet device (something I doubt

note: and who the hell has ANY idea what is going on, both with making it and what will sell

It's a total unknown (except for that failed pen tab business, but they've said that's not going to happen)

But then it's always a good show :)

I'll be interested IF:

1) it can be used in portrait mode with a decent sized thumb keyboard at the bottom of the screen, and a reasonable application area at the top of the screen (I don't need to hear the crap about "not being the target market", but one the most important parts of a mobile device for me is a good solid SSH and/or remote desktop application, so the application area has to give me at least an 80x24 ssh terminal screen, and hopefully at least an 6000x400 remote desktop). Note, I don't need a _local_ terminal (local shell), just an SSH application to a remote shell.

2) has at least a docking station that has USB port(s) and an Apple Display Port, so that I can hook it up to a KVM or something. Should also have at least one built-in USB port for a portable keyboard at a coffee shop, or for mass storage devices (for user data, doesn't have to be usable for iTunes data and/or applications).

3) charge via USB client, and USB Mass Storage mode as a device (ie. offer its _user_ storage to a desktop machine, but again, not its iTunes data nor applications). It would be interesting if, in this client mode, it could also offer its touchscreen as an input device for whatever its attached to (trackpad, drawing pad, even as a virtual keyboard).

4) has to either be fully usable by itself (no Mac nor Windows machine), or at least passably useful with an Ubuntu desktop. Yes, I have Macs, but not everywhere.

5) Real Safari, not half-baked safari that doesn't give you the actual desktop equivalent version of a web site in ALL cases.

If it does all of that ... then I could be convinced. Bonus if it runs desktop OS X apps (including Terminal), makes all of its data available to and from USB mass storage modes (ie. like a Macbook, instead of like an iPod), and has at least one (full size) SDHC card slot.

Tablet Requirements

IF an Apple tablet is debuted, I will purchase IF and ONLY IF:

The devise runs a full version of OSX or its own unique hybrid version between the iPhone and desktop version. I think it's stupid to run iPhone OS on any larger screen, and it will not be successful in differentiating the product from an existing one in Apple's current lineup.

AND ONLY if it's priced at $600 or $700, but no more.

They need to differentiate this product between the iPhone and MacBook. If they do this successfully, I will camp out at my local Apple Store to buy this. I'm not interested in a 3G subscription, that's what my 3GS is for, I'm looking for an ultra-portable, cheaper than the MacBook Air that's simple to carry around school and take notes, web surf, etc...

Has to be more than this.

"- Will be used primarily for Web surfing, e-mail, and digital media, competing with netbooks without being a netbook."

Firstly, isn't that what a netbook is?

Second, it has to do more than what the iPhone can already do, otherwise it will be a bigger iphone without being a phone.

People won't pay that kind of money for just a larger screen - it has to do more. Still waiting for more info...

Ummm, Arn makes a good amount of money off this site!!! Way into 6 figures...

Uhh... No.

The only reason I'm rating this "negative" is because of the phrase "in fact" in that last bullet point.

In fact, it's speculation.

People who use "in fact" in that manner fall into one or more of these:
1) People who are trying to lie to you
2) People who are trying too hard to convince themselves
3) People who habitually use the phrase because they know too many of groups 1/2, or otherwise don't know any better

If that doesn't convince you, let me put it this way: Miss South Carolina's infamous speech also used "in fact" in this manner.

I think they should make it completely independent of iTunes, so all of the abilities iTunes provides are available on the device itself. I know a lot of people for which this would be a computer replacement (even if it is limited to iPhone OS) so having to own a computer as well would be a dealbreaker for them.

Other mockups were better than this one.

I'll buy one if

- runs AppStore apps
- runs Safari, Mail, iTunes, e-book reader (with possibily ebook store)
- has wi-fi, 3G as an option
- has huge memory compared to ipod/iphone

Hi everyone! I can barely see any of you because the mountains of speculation and rumour are in the way.

Can I Photoshop an iPhone and make it larger and more squarish, too? Oh oh please, please, can I??

If it's a "Snow Leopard Touch" OS (ie. desktop OS X, with finger friendly GUI), and not an "iPhone OS on steroids", I'd pay as much as $800 for it. Even unsubsidised.

If you add that, and a Verizon and/or AT&T subsidised 3G model ... I'd expect a $200-$250 discount, so $550-$600. I'd probably prefer AT&T, but I could accept Verizon.

No way that will be $600. The original iPhone was that much and had much less capabilities. If its under $1k I'll be surprised. Apple doesn't go for market share by making products inexpensive.

I agree.

I don't want a bigger iPhone.

I think this is very funny:

Will be priced between an iPhone and a MacBook -- between $500 and $700.

Excuse me? Do they have any idea how much the iphone costs without a mobile contract?

In Italy the 32GB version costs 700 euro, and that's 1005 dollars (yes, one thausand 5 bucks).

It truly is the most expensive consumer phone ever!!!

That's true! In Greece costs 669 euros (for the 32 GB model) without a contract, plus the fact that there is no stock availability.
