I definetly prefer MacLife's concept from 2008:

That I'd buy in a heartbeat. A 10" iPhone? Not so much. I already have an iPhone....

We're missing something.

What's the intended market for this product? Why would someone choose this over a regular netbook - especially without a keyboard. I personally can't see myself typing up an entire document using the onscreen keyboard. The tactile feedback is kind of essential there.

Perhaps this is going to be a media device? Similar to the AppleTV? Replacing the AppleTV, perhaps? Without a full keyboard, I can pretty much only see this device used for handheld gaming, watching videos, and internet. I can''t see it used for word processing or really any heavy business applications. And that might be its downfall. However, the rumor mill has been unusually quiet in regards to any new deals with ebooks or video content.

Perhaps apple's external keyboards will be available for it? But that seems to go against Apple's M.O. of simplicity.

We're definitely missing something.

Really? So "Jobso" has built all of his new products by himself using his own tools in his shack in the back yard? And he has to fly to China, because that's where his shack is located?

Jeez.

No, but "Jobso" likes to throw products away and say "REDESIGN" at random intervals, just cuz he can (according to those rumors anyways).

I would buy it in a heartbeat if it ran full fledged OS X. But if it is a gussied up iPhone, I'm just not interested in a codec limited media player.

Tom

Same here! It needs to have a lot of multiple features, like an ebook reader, gps etc....

I'll await Apple's announcement before I draw any conclusions from these analysts!

I agree totally.

I agree wholeheartedly, there was also another concept that had it setup in a slightly different desktop config.

Both equally intuitive, elegant and very clever.

And by that token, both as far away from the Apple Inc. of today as it's possible to be.

It used to be "Think Different", now it's just "Think Of Different Ways We Can Make As Much Money As Possible Without Really Offering Anything Groundbreaking"

Glossy sides .... I can't believe it Apple, we need a matte option.

Can we start a petition?!?

OK, in my head it was funny

Seriously. I put up with my Iphone chrome bezel being hacked beyond belief from the first time I sync it out of the box, but I am not carrying around a larger device that's going to look like crap around the edges and blind people when I take it out in public. Please make it black already.

Munster also provides a mockup (above) of what he believes the device will look like.

So, if I understand this right, this guy pulls a design out of his hat (or some other opening) and expects the rest of the world to take him seriously? Why is this nonsense even news?

If I post a Photoshopped image of a Caterpillar bulldozer with an Apple logo on the side and claim it's the design for the next Powerbook, can I get a job as an "analyst?"

Clever in what regard? The mockup with the iMac and the tablet sticking out the side looks like an engineering nightmare (where do you plan to stick the internals of the machine). This is one of those images a graphic artist dreams up without putting login into the design.

I would have really like this based on Mac OSX - not the iPhone OS

Totally agree.

Why would I want to have a bigger iPhone? The iPhone is great, it does email, web, media great.

What it doesn't do well is run Word/Excel/OmniGraffle or Photoshop.

Give me Snow Leapord on a 10" touch screen, with a dock, virtual keyboard and wifi. Don't stick me into yet another plan with yet another cell provider.

oh dont worry. Steve will enlighten us soon enough.

I'll take this over a piece of crap 'netbook' anyday! I'll be sooo happy if Apple is smart enough to skip this 'netbook' fad.

That mock-up is HUGE.
No way apple would design something that awful. I definitely agree, if you can't make a good mock-up then don't bother. All you're doing is depressing us :(

Since I currently do not own any Mac/MacBook products, I'm definitely looking forward to this. I'm hoping it will run on Snow Leopard OS X and not be subsidized by a carrier. Remember, this is Apple we're talking about. They could, and probably will, surprise us with this product (in a good way).

That home button just doesn't look right on the tablet. I mean just think about how big it would be...I wouldn't really consider buying one of the, although it might be a bit fun to play around with in the Apple Store.

I fail to see the point of having this tablet include a contract with a mobile provider. At this point I see that more as a negative than a positive. It frankly looks like the tech analyst/blogger fantasy that was continually used to rate the Macbook Air negatively, ie: it doesn't have 3G built-in therefore it will fail and be discontinued promptly. I wouldn't be surprised if the contract as well as the iTunes album bonus things are false leaks.

If you can't for 1, hook up a bluetooth keyboard or mouse, no buy. 2, if it does not do iWork, no buy. I can see this tablet being used by college students taking notes, writing papers when not by the desktop, printing from it, and hooking up a keyboard to do some real typing.

I'm excited for a product like this, because I own a Mac Pro, I would love to have something I can tot around with me to do my work elsewhere...

They have a plain white t's album playing in the background of the mockup:eek: Of all the albums they could show, why the plain white t's unknown 3rd album?

I would never buy a larger iphone that can't make call for 700. Maybe 300.

The question is...

...will it be able to support any media format, including flash? I'd imagine not, but in truth no one will know until it comes out, if it is even a real product...

Starting to manufacture in September for delivery in 2010 does not ring true for me.

Ramp up of an embedded consumer device like the iPhone/iPod takes around 6 to 8 weeks to ramp up enough for a launch.

There's no point in ordering it now for delivery in the weakest quarter of the year. Especially if they suspect they'll only sell 2 million in the first year.

I suspect an announcement alongside iPod refreshes in September with delivery by the end of October. Even then that's stretching it as recent launches have all been available within 4 weeks. So if not at the September iPod refresh then in a special event a few weeks later.
:D

As described here, I see no point to this as a product.

You might as well save up a bit more and get a MacBook and tether your iPhone to it.

UNLESS.... it runs a multi-touch version of Snow Leopard rather than iPhone OS, has at least 120gb and can run iPhoto/iMovie with the correct ports on it. And output to a hi-def TV.

Then i'll snap it up.

I love the fact that you cn see the faded out home button halfway under the screen on the right side. Sweet mockup

lol. i saw that too. they really need to do a better mockup. Its just an enlarged iphone. how will you place this on your desk? there should be some legs added to the bottom or else everyone's head will be parallel to the desk.

Market

We're missing something.

While I love the iPhone keyboard (I can type on it faster than most people can type in real life!) a virtual full-sized keyboard is a little different. It's not necessarily pressing down the keys but just knowing where your fingers are by the feel of the keys (esp. the dots on the F and J keys). But I suppose if it is taking up half the screen, you'd be forced to look at it anyways!

I've never really understood the netbook market though. Is it real or is it a fad?

If Apple did get into it, a 10" MacBook would seem more likely than a tablet to me.
