If it's a "Snow Leopard Touch" OS (ie. desktop OS X, with finger friendly GUI), and not an "iPhone OS on steroids", I'd pay as much as $800 for it. Even unsubsidised.

If you add that, and a Verizon and/or AT&T subsidised 3G model ... I'd expect a $200-$250 discount, so $550-$600. I'd probably prefer AT&T, but I could accept Verizon.

Yes, IF it was a Snow Leopard Touch version, they could maybe convince me with $800 unsubsidized. I would also prefer AT&T over Verizon, but I don't think I would get into a contract over a tablet.

I think they will introduce it at the iPod event but it won't be on sale for another 6 months (like they did with the 1st iPhone to build hype / pass FCC muster, etc).

Really? Really? It's a big iPod touch with a desktop? How imaginative of them.

For better or worse, Apple has never introduced a brand new product that has so delivered on expectations. It simply must have something nothing else does, or do things in a way we hadn't thought of. I hope so, anyway.

All of you really excited for this, and based on what this "analyst" has prepared above, what would actually think you would do with such a device? I really want to know.

This is stupid!!! Every tablet mockup shown to date has just looked like an enlarged iPhone. And guess what, it is just ugly.

I feel that people have lost their imaginations.

You are correct, mockup artists, and consumers have lost their imaginations and higher levels of thinking.

Some jerkwad with Maya takes an iPhone or iPod Touch and makes it bigger, moves the Mac OSX Mobile apps around like it's a desktop and claims that "this is how such and such garbage iTablet will work and look" and the mindless drooling drones go crazy over the bad artwork.

Nothing's changed from the awful iPhone mockups of 2000-2005.

I think this is pretty obviously not what its going to to look like. How would you hold it without hitting the touch screen? Apple spends way to much money and time doing R/D to make a mistake like that. Esp. after the Newton, they're going to be really careful with this one just like they were with the iPhone.

Seems like these analysts either know about business and finance or about tech products, rarely both. The mock up is clearly just to get themselves in the headlines (which I guess was successful.)

Sorry but it isn't a mockup if they just take the touch and change the screen image.

And double sorry on the fact that "helloooo!!! Unibody. You think it is going to look like an iPhone/iPod Touch or have a MacBook/Pro Unibody rigid frame.

I expect unibody.

Is it just me or is the only difference between macrumors and all these analyst firms is that they get paid a hell of a lot to make up stuff?

I see they're doing mock-ups now too?

And not just mock ups, someone obviously horrible in Photoshop (not even removing the home button in the "mockup") :D

I'd like to see the following:
  1. Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
  2. ARM CPU rather than Intel Atom (for battery life)
  3. Porting of all Apple consumer apps to Mac OS X for ARM
  4. 3G modem
  5. Ability to run iPhone apps windowed like in the crappy mock up
  6. Maximum of 10 inch screen but very high resolution
  7. Mini DisplayPort or mini DVI connector
  8. At least one USB port
  9. 10+ hours battery life - not impossible with an ARM CPU

Tablet = Fail

They have never taken off. If they price it to around $400 bucks, that would generate better sales........maybe.

I would have really like this based on Mac OSX - not the iPhone OS

1. No one (other than Jobso) knows if Apple has a new product coming.
2. No one knows what it looks like.
3. No one knows what its functionality will be.
4. No one know what it will sell for.

Yet Gene Munster forecasts 1.2G$ in 2010. Seriously? GIGO.

This is stupid!!! Every tablet mockup shown to date has just looked like an enlarged iPhone. And guess what, it is just ugly.

I feel that people have lost their imaginations.

Glossy sides .... I can't believe it Apple, we need a matte option.

Can we start a petition?!?

OK, in my head it was funny

I definetly prefer MacLife's concept from 2008:

That I'd buy in a heartbeat. A 10" iPhone? Not so much. I already have an iPhone....

Totally agree.

Why would I want to have a bigger iPhone? The iPhone is great, it does email, web, media great.

What it doesn't do well is run Word/Excel/OmniGraffle or Photoshop.

Give me Snow Leapord on a 10" touch screen, with a dock, virtual keyboard and wifi. Don't stick me into yet another plan with yet another cell provider.

I think they will introduce it at the iPod event but it won't be on sale for another 6 months (like they did with the 1st iPhone to build hype / pass FCC muster, etc).

Why is everyone here thinking this the the actual product? Come on, its just a mock up!

chill out....

Actually, the mockup is interesting from one perspective-- the larger screen is displaying multiple, overlapping, resizable windows, with several iPhone apps running concurrently, each running in a separate window,

This implies a full[er] OS X (with multitasking) rather than iPhone OS X.

Isn't this guy making this stuff up from the batch of rumors floating around. THe fact that the "image" on the screen shows anything doesn't imply of what its capable of... I could draw the mockup with apps floating above the screen.. does this mean the new device would have hologram capability??? no...

Sorry for the rant.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Must be based on Mac OS X and NOT on the limited OS X (iPhone OS). Video-out port. For Keynote and PowerPoint presentations.

Clever in what regard? The mockup with the iMac and the tablet sticking out the side looks like an engineering nightmare (where do you plan to stick the internals of the machine). This is one of those images a graphic artist dreams up without putting login into the design.
Oh I dunno, squish some of those pesky iMac wires up, you knows shunt them left behnind the circuit board thingie and you'd be able to free up some space for a docking bay no problemo

ps. I used to work for NASA, can you tell? :p

Maybe I'll believe it all when I start seeing leaked pictures of cases etc. Isn't that how we know a product is coming? :)

Ummm, Arn makes a good amount of money off this site!!! Way into 6 figures...

Arn deserves it, he does a great job with this site. As far as this "tablet" idea goes, I think there will be a market for it (if it ever really drops). There are plenty of people who use their Touch for media and programs who would like a larger screen. Ever try to watch a movie while on the treadmill on an iPod? It can be done but the screen is a bit small for comfort.

Add a virtual or bluetooth keyboard so that one could get a little work done on the fly and you've got a winner. It may not be for everyone, but the question is, will it be for enough people that there's profit in it for Apple? I say yes.

While I love the iPhone keyboard (I can type on it faster than most people can type in real life!) a virtual full-sized keyboard is a little different. It's not necessarily pressing down the keys but just knowing where your fingers are by the feel of the keys (esp. the dots on the F and J keys). But I suppose if it is taking up half the screen, you'd be forced to look at it anyways!

I've never really understood the netbook market though. Is it real or is it a fad?

If Apple did get into it, a 10" MacBook would seem more likely than a tablet to me.

The netbook market is for people who want another computer, but want something small. It doesn't make sense for most people to pay $1k+ on a small laptop when all its going to be used for is internet and email. It fits great into a bag and you barely notice it.

IMO this device will be a great success even if it is nothing but a glorified Touch. It seems to me that Apple is the only company these days that folks are really excited when new products are released. I just came from our local mall and there is a line a mile long at the Apple store. Why? Because this weekend is tax free weekend in NC and folks are lined up to buy new MacBooks. You just don't see that kind of excitement with any other company these days with the economy the way it is. It doesn't matter what Apple sells, people will line up to buy it. I know I'm very excited about the new device even if it runs iPhone OS 3.1 rather than OS X and I will be lined up to buy it with everyone else when/if it comes out.

All they need is a killer function. To me: hand writing recognition, computing like a limited laptop, art creation via stylus. If this was a hyper iPod Touch with art/handwriting and iWork apps... utter, overwhelming, win.

Somehow I doubt it. They will probably sell a $600-$800 enhanced iPod Touch with better gaming and perhaps better data entry for some work apps. To me, such a tablet would be worth $499, but not more.

Tablet = Fail

They have never taken off. If they price it to around $400 bucks, that would generate better sales........maybe.

Yes, yes, and they NEVER will, because new products NEVER work. I remember the automobile...what a FAILURE.

And now for the serious part: if this tablet works as more of a computer than a media player, it WILL succeed.

I totally agree. 90% of the market doesn't NEED or WANT a super computer, but a media device, net browser, emailer, game player, simple picture/video editor perhaps, chat/comm device, document reader, simple data applications like iWork.

The iPod Touch is already close to the power of a 10 year old iBook. With the extra space behind the screen on a tablet, Apple can jam in enough power and storage to make something close to a 6 year old iBook with better graphics/video capability.

I pity the fool!

I guess as an analyst you're under a lot of pressure to predict this sort of thing. I just had a good laugh at this one -- that mockup is so fugly, and then to go and base sales numbers on it -- just humorous.

I'll certainly be interested in the final product. While I don't own one of everything Apple, it's always nice to have more choices. Some fit my needs, others don't so much, but I like to know they're out there, if need arises. (Or my tech lust gets the better of me.)

There is no way the tablet will run iPhone 3.0.

You know why? Not only is the idea dumb and flawed and providing NO additional features... but there would be no reason to ever have both an iphone and the tablet.

I think apple is creating something that beautifully compliments the iphone and makes us want BOTH. How many ppl have ipod touches AND iphones? Not a whole lot. It would canabalize their own products!!

I think it's obvious that this tablet which is coming out will have a version of Snow Leopard. Think abuout it, they pushed back the release a few time's because they wanted to get it "right". Steve came back after 6 months, very well could have made his much anticipated appeareance for the iPhone 3GS, but opted to deliver a new product (tablet) a new OS which will include touch recognition for said new product. Lets just wait and see what he's going to deliver! Is there a date yet for this event? If it is in fact September shouldn't we see invitaions, very soon??????

You are absolutely right. Hopefully Apple is thinking in that direction. The question is--will Apple possibly cannibalize their notebook market with this device? Or will they bring in a far bigger sales range with this device and recoup any lost revenue via the App store and perhaps further software sales via quick and cheap online sales?
