It takes two to tango here. As with television and films, there's a contract between Apple and the production company that states which game, when and how long will be available on the platform. Even if Apple wanted those games to stay, the developer/publisher can still demand that their stuff has to leave Arcade after a certain date. Those agreements usually are not made public, so we can only speculate for now.

I have Apple One Premier and Arcade is the service I use the least. News+ is my second least used service. I’ve downloaded a couple of games but I never play them.

Apple Arcade could be great but the titles are lacking. I guess Apple is too busy buying Sports rights.

And fixing Books, News+, Podcasts+ … And translating Fitness+ for the rest of the world.

People are being a bit liberal with their definition of a AAA game.

Such a game means a major studio and blockbuster budget. We’re talking Grand Theft Auto, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Halo, etc.

Lol no such thing exists on mobile. Angry Birds and Subway Surfers are not AAA. The closest argument one could make is something like Apex Legends. While that is a big studio in EA, it’s still a heavily diluted version compared to its console counterpart.

I understand why Apple Arcade doesn't work for everyone, but it works well for my situation. I really appreciate not having to worry about ads and in-app purchases in apps my kids are using.

Good. The sooner games leave this joke of a service, the sooner they can become available to buy on the App Store and Steam.

It took me a few seconds to get the sarcasm in this post - well done. ;)

Lots of people don't seem to like Apple Arcade. I have it as part of my premier subscription and I agree that the select of games is not particularly great for me and I would definitely like to see some proper AAA games. I think Apple Arcade is an excellent opportunity for Apple to entice game makers to develop for the Mac and with recent updates to Metal, developers are running out of reasons to not bring their games across.

But, my children use Apple Arcade all the time, they love the games and it actually works out really well for us as they are not constantly bothering me to spend money on new games.

Even if Apple Arcade had titles it still wouldn't be great. The reason Xbox Game Pass works but Apple Arcade doesn't is because Xbox Game Pass is an option, not the only option. Game Pass gives you the ability to buy and own a game when it leaves the service or if you're not planning on renewing, at a discount no less. Apple Arcade? You gotta be subbed, no exceptions. You wanna buy Fantasian but don't wanna sub to Apple Arcade? TOO BAD! So many games that got Mac ports can't be sold on Steam because of the Apple Arcade exclusivity, or popular series like Enter the Gungeon and Shantae had sequels that were exclusive to Apple Arcade which caused a lot of controversy.

I also want to touch on this bit: "developers are running out of reasons to not bring their games across."
That's a good joke buddy. There's still lots of reasons for developers not to bring their games to Mac, those being:

  • Metal still doesn't hold a candle to industry standard APIs of DirectX and Vulkan
  • Apple divesting OpenGL years ago causing a mass exodus of game developers
  • Apple's complete neglect for the game industry
  • Apple's draconian developer rules
  • Apple showing they don't give a crap about game preservation or older compatibility at all compared to Windows and Linux
  • Apple's comments during Apple vs Epic showing just how out of touch they are with the game industry
  • The neglectable market share on Mac compared to console and PC
  • The work needed for Mac ports compared to PC and console
  • A lot of APIs used are not compatible on ARM and require Rosetta to run
  • The majority of gamers aren't gonna buy Macs
Look, I want gaming on Mac to be a thing too. But Apple's attitude towards games as well as the lower customer base compared to PC and consoles makes it not worth it for the majority of developers to make Mac versions, and by the time said Mac versions even come out they'll have been available on much better (and cheaper) platforms for a lot longer.

So if I have these games on my phone, and they drop from AA, will they still playable on my phone or will it be auto-deleted?

Imagine u played game XY for xy hours and then it’s gone just like that
Hot take but that's how all time is with games, think of xy hours spent that could be spent on better things.. Can take a new skill into the future for years to come, no one will care that you got all of the achievements and beat the campaign on the hardest difficulty.

At any rate, I have Arcade as part of my Apple One sub and I just stick to casual games so I'm not worried about losing progress, but I could see that being annoying on more grindy games for some players.

Gonna veer off topic and say that Apple Arcade really lost me when I realized that not all games are on Mac or Apple TV. That was a major selling point of the service when it launched, but quite a few games are missing from Mac and ATV — the ones I’ve only ever thought to play.

This is a slap to those Apple Music users who claims Apple never deletes a title you enjoy
Actually Apple doesn’t delete anything from Apple Music.
That’s the record labels doing, and it’s very annoying.
It’s also not an Apple Music only thing, titles will disappear and reappear from Spotify, Title, and all of the other music streaming or purchasing services all the time.
YouTube is probably the worst, albums disappearing, and reappearing, and then disappearing again, and then reappearing all the time

I literally only have Apple Arcade because it’s cheaper to pay for Apple1 than it is Music Family, TV+ and iCloud+ separately.
Really wish I could pick and choose which ones I want, I would ditch arcade so fast and get News instead

Gosh, a lot of Apple Arcade hate here.

It's not AAA games for the most part, but there are quite a few games I liked. Fantasian, Outlanders, Oregon Trail, Bloons TD 6, Angry birds, mini moto, Oceanhorn, and No Way Home were all games I enjoyed a lot.
Yes I don't play on the phone alot but I've liked what I have. We like the ones we can multiplar like that name that tune one.

What I wish is that if you had a part already included through your cellular carrier or some other way, you would get a small discount.

Indeed. The lineup has been really weak. The one intriguing aspect was them paying developers to fix up and bring back old games that stopped working several iOS versions ago, but I've not really seen enough of that.

Maybe if they helped bring Dark Castle back to Mac/iOS.

Or LittleWing's most excellent (Japanese-made pinball games) Crystal Caliburn, etc.

Or gee.... I dunno.... maybe some of the legendary Mac sharewares, like Ambrosia's Escape Velocity. And maybe a modern reprise of Bungie's Marathon (1, 2, 3), etc.

A smattering of AAA games is also necessary for Arcade to take off. Too bad Arcade doesn't have a single AAA port from porting houses like Aspyr and Feral.

And Apple needs to stop being a wholesome Church Lady nanny-state company. Bring modernized versions of Leisure Suit Larry games to Apple Arcade! 🕺🕺🕺💃🕺🕺👯‍♂️
