Hey guys! :) I'm new in the MacRumors forum (I'm from Spain)
AnandTech have just released the iPhone 5s review and they wrote some information about the new Apple case. It seems the leather of the beige case started to wear with the use (not dramatically). I think that a darker case like the black one is a better choice.

Do you think this, plus a standard screen protector will be enough to protect the iPhone going in and out of a zip pocket? I'm starting to worry already.

Thanks for posting the link. I was planning on getting the black color case anyway, thinking that the lighter colors will show more wear and tear. Anand is not sure if the cases are leather or synthetic. According to Apple, the cases are made from premium leather.

Similar story in the Pocket-lint review:

"We've had the oddly-named red case for less than a week and it's already looking worn and tatty."

And to answer my own question, it looks like it does have a raised lip which stands proud of the screen:

Good if you want lay-on-the-table. Bad if you want a clean back swipe.

hmm I wonder how the wear and tear of these cases will hold up if Anand's beige case is already showing wear within a week. My GF wants the beige one too..

That's a bummer!

Will Apple offer a non-leather option, as with the ipad? Maybe the PU material will be more durable?

Not when it starts to look like this after only a week:
But excuse me, that's premium wear and tear. ;)
This plus the fact it doesn't surround the front of the device at all is making me wonder!

I'm thinking the distressed look after it some wear and tear might look nice and vintage(y). My gf still wants it...

I'm going with black :)

The front of the case does have a lip so it will protect it some what.

I hope the black case doesn't show gray material under the leather like the aluminum of our black iPhones :D

whats the point of a case if it doesnt protect against a drop? I dont get it. You are better off keeping it naked than wasting $40 on some synthetic leather BS

You honestly can't think of any possible reason for a case other than a drop?

How about just plain wear and tear from grit on the table top, sitting in a cupholder in the car, in and out of pockets, etc...

I was thinking this too...My iphone5 been naked since release, to date I have not dropped it. I've decided to get one of these cases not for drop reasons (not my concern) but strictly for the reasons you stated.

I wonder what the beige is going to look like in person.

If it matches the white iPhone 5 I'll probably get that. If not, looks like I'm going to go with the red.

This is my plan of action as well I think. I'm just wondering how well the beige will hold up? Its the nicest of the bunch IMO.

Cases that protect against drops also protect against those things.

Not everyone wants to take a slim/sleek device and swaddle it in a big thick bulky rubbery bundle.

This is why it's wonderful that there's a wide variety of case solutions available; something for everyone. Wrap your phone up however makes you feel comfortable. Those who feel a need to protect their phone from anything/everything have options, those who are willing to assume some risk in exchange for reduced bulk have options.

I trust you're not so myopic as to think your way is the only way.

No need to throw out ad hominem attacks. But slim and protective are not mutually exclusive.

No attack was made or implied. If you saw one in what I wrote, it was your interpretation.

"Slim" and "protective" are subjective criteria that can each have a spectrum of meaning. I'm sure there are cases for which the two intersect. Depending on construction, the Apple case might qualify at least to the level that cases like the Incipio Feather. Or it might not. Haven't seen one in person. It's clearly no Otterbox Defender, but it also clearly isn't meant to be.
