Well, in all fairness, it is not that evident on the regular Apple site... I think it is more noticeable on the phone apple store app, but I ordered from the desktop site, where you would have to scroll all the way below questions and answers and suggested products to find tiny fine gray print that addresses color change. So... for me, I didn't see the warning until I got my case in the mail and read the back of the box.

It turned out okay, since I ordered black, but if I can see why people like Alan who ordered the lighter color were surprised.

So, it's not in this section:

But all the way at the bottom below where anyone would assume product information would be (and hard to read even then):

ETA: there was a lot more scrolling than these two pictures show, but I didn't figure you all wanted to see that much detail.

That is definitely too far down the page if you ask me. In putting it there, it's seems as though they are trying to hide it. And when people complain, they can still say: "Well it's on the product page. It's not our fault you didn't read it."

Well, picked up a black one last week. Like it a lot. Seems to be holding up fine so far, especially with the in and out motions in my jeans since it's cold out.

Verdicts still out there if I'll switch back to the Candyshell though, we'll see.

Raffi, you are clearly extremely delusional about the cost of products. The iPhone 5S 64GB costs 925.43 Canadian dollars in the US unsubsidized before tax. The 5S 64GB is actually cheaper in Canada than in the US.

I bought 64GB 5S from Best Buy for $958 USD with tax unsubsidized. Most cell phone carriers pay Apple $400-$500 so that they can lower the price of devices.

The case also doesn't cost anywhere near $1.10 for Apple, again I am a product designer and I know for a fact that Apple probably pays somewhere around $20 when you consider production, shipping, returns, warranties, and support costs, per case. They probably will pay $22-$28 per case this year when you consider R&D costs.

Its $849 in the USA unsubsidized. Unless taxes add up to $150 then your the one who is delusional. I would pay $913 in my area. Thats $100 cheaper.

The only thing Apple don't tell you is that it easily wares. Has this happened to anyone else? This has happened to the corners and edges of mine...

That is not wear, that is patina for lack of a better word.

Yeeee I'm gonna rock this case.
It will discolor pretty quickly so be prepared. If you think that will be an issue I'd just take it back for a darker color and save yourself some manufactured heart ache.

Agreed. Black is the safest option it seems.

Just got the red case for my space gray phone, I love it! And this is coming from someone used to carrying phones naked, this might be the first phone I actually keep a case on. Then again, we'll see, I have 14 days to return it :)

Same for my red case. Kinda sucks to be honest cos I want a new case now.
Apple really should do a better job of building cases

my red is pretty dark on the front lip and side.. Almost black.

Anyone know the best way to clean them? Seen any other threads where people talking about the best way to clean the case?

I bought some of the Weiman's leather cleaner this weekend, and I like it pretty well, but since my case is black, I can't speak to the stain fighting power. It did seem to be lifting some dirt into the cloth, though.

My black leather case should be on my desk tomorrow. Looking forward to it after handling a coworkers red one (which is already showing some black "wear" spots...no matter how anal he is. And he is.).

Is the power button really hard to push? That has been a real dealbreaker with some other cases I've had (i.e.: Otterbox)...so I hope this one isn't too bad.

No way, it's not hard to push at all. I have heard others say that too, and I don't get it. Unless perhaps I am incredibly strong and just don't know it... hm...

Spidey-strengh, maybe?

Good to hear. I've had a few cases like the O-box that you had to actually hold against your body and push the power button, it was so hard to push. Really a drag.

...I have the black case on my 5 right now and have to say I love it!!!

certainly THE best case I have used and I have loads (SGP Slim Armors, SGP Tough Armors, a couple of different Element cases, among others, etc)

I have had mine for just under a week and have seen no wear and tear on it yet. I had been following this thread from the start (before I ordered mine) and it seemed everybody was having issues with the coloured versions so this was a huge factor which resulted in me going for the black one.

My power and volume buttons all press nice and easily and I really like the feel of the case in my hand - gives it a little mushy feeling, seeing that the material is so soft! It also, strangely, makes the iPhone 5 look exceptionally slim and is certainly THE slimmest case I have ever owned.

I did have a slight issue with my case however - along the side of case (the sim card tray side), the edge, ever so slightly bowed outwards, so that it didn't touch the side of the phone itself and created a slight gap.

I was a little miffed at this but then decided to rectify it by then pushing on the offending side, inwards, so that it counteracted the bowing.

It then fitted 100% perfectly - with no gaps anywhere.

Love this case and love that it is a genuine case made by Apple.

;)

this is some kinda funny!

it seems that most of you are not used to own a lot of leather products, huh?

ALL kinds of leather (anilin or not) are prone to discoloration and an unstoppable aging process! I like that a lot!!! Gives those leather made items some kind of character and "personality"!

I got the brown case for myself and could not be happier with the scuffs, dark spots and general aging it starts to develop! Honestly, its the same with belts, shoes, boots imho they all look so much nicer if gained some "patina"!!!

I would not buy other leather colors as beige, brown or black - as i have to admit that aging and discoloration on those "artificial" (not natural leather colors like blue, red and such) could look gross.

To each their own but if you dont like this "natural way of aging" in your leather made gear, you better off and look into plastic, rubber or other man-made materials

just my 2 cents

I think the "patina" on the leather would be more acceptable to more people if the case were made out of a slick leather like belts, purses, wallets, etc. instead of almost a suede-like leather, or "reverse leather" that is so popular now in performance car seats and the like.

The patina or aging effect on that kind of leather surface looks great on boots and belts, but not so much on phone cases IMO. Like you said, to each their own...but those that have complained also have complained that a case should not look so worn so quickly for over $40 (incl. tax). I tend to agree, and that's why I skipped the brown case and went with the black.

Thank you! I agree. I didn't want the brown one until I realized that it WOULD get darker and age over time. That's what I'm counting on. Been a couple of weeks now and my edges are getting dark and I'm glad for it. Looking forward to it changing over time. Looks great to me so far, but again, everyone's tastes are different.

I've gone through a few cases on my own 5 and girlfriends 5s and yes there seems to be a variation in the power button. At my last exchange the apple rep said that he has heard of and understood the issue and opened up 4-5 cases with me until I found the one that satisfied me.

I bought the black leather case today. Mixed feelings so far. Love the way it feels but I'm finding that it's easy for little things to get stuck in the sides of the case. Unlike most other cases (like my previous Speck Candy Shell) there isn't a lip the goes up over the sides to prevent small debris from getting wedged into the sides. I can see this being a PITA. Other than that it seems to fit well and feels nice in hand.

I have heard others say that too, and I don't get it.
First time I'm hearing about it.

IF it took you 5 cases to find one with a power button you like because they were "too hard to push", may I suggest your expectations are a bit too high OR a gym membership?

Going through this thread, I really like the look of the worn leather.

It's sorta like a wallet. I do not like new looking leather wallets. I might prefer some "mileage" and wear and tear.

Sadly, I can't find a 32GB gold 5S to actually put a case on

This! I've had mine for a week now the sides are getting a lot of dirt and dust. PITA to take the case off and clean it out as well. Contemplating on switching to a Pixel Skin HD or Candy Shell.

I love the feel of it but hate the dirt.
