Case is only worth about $4.99 with free shipping. Anyone who bought it got robbed.
Something is worth exactly what people are willing to pay for it so to many, many people it is worth $40.

Not really, it's not worth $40. If it was then this thread would be non-existent.
Perhaps you should get a dictionary and look up how to spell the word 'perhaps.'
Oh, and durability is component of quality.

No. You don't understand what the word quality means. Quality is the degree of excellence something achieves in it's intended use.
You're confusing value with quality. Poor quality is when something is intended to be durable and fails. Poor value is when something is intended NOT to be durable and you want it to be. The Apple leather cases are not designed to have a durable finish. They are purposely designed to show wear and tear. Apple spent more money and went out of their way to make to make these cases show wear and tear and warns consumers about this design choice on the box.
Apple has decided that it likes the look of aged leather, and your case is designed to age with use.

Then you haven't seen one of these up close and have no sense of quality.

um....no?
For some odd reason, if apple makes it, people believe it has to be God's greatest creation. Heres the thing: those apple cases will NOT wear evenly...the corners will wear but what about the back? nope. it will look uneven.
Heck, on the lighter colored models, the corners will look very dirty. I had the brown case, although its a nice case, its definitely not worth $40. Should be worth $20. Its not like they use a premium leather either, its a cheaper leather. If you've owned a expensive leather you would know. [/img]
I'm a product designer that specializes in creating leather goods. What you're saying is simply not true . Their costs could be 5 times lower if they went with a more durable material.
[/img]Overall, is it a good case? yes it is. Is it worth $40? no its worth half of that. theres a difference between quality leather wearing, and cheap leather wearing...
That's the idea. It's supposed to wear along the edges more. That's how "grunge" is added in art. Image
Again Apples leather is not cheap. It's two thirds of the way to the most expensive kind that money can buy off the mass market. Anything better would be high end ultra fine leather or hand tanned custom material.
I'm curious as to where on apples website or on the box it says what type if leather it is?
Thanks for the above post Krabba, great info.
For those calling this case cheap, not well made, junk ect ect are crazy. This is by far one of the best built cases I've seen/used. How did they mold this thing to fit like it does? I understand the frustration with the discoloration but it's the nature of the leather.
I do agree however the case is too expensive but what sold by apple isn't?

That's the point I'm trying to make: it's a nice case but too expensive
You are quite welcome. I did a bit of research on aniline leather prior to my purchase and after reading the disclaimer on the Apple site.
----------
You also said Apple did not use a "premium leather", which I believe I've shown to be inaccurate.
No, there are different types of finishes that can be used on full grain leather. Aniline is one of them but there are other finishes like semi aniline that can work better at preventing scuffs or marks without causing a patina effect. A $200 Gucci case made of full grain leather will have a finish that makes that case much more durable and less prone to scratches. That's premium leather. If apple can make a leather case for less than $40 (they have a profit margin to maintain) then everything would have this "premium" leather but it doesn't. Premium leather doesn't wear like apples case does. Don't be fooled by marketing. Apple is really good at it.

Thanks for the info...... what ever it is I like it.It's actually plastic covered in a thin layer of leather.
I've had no issues but I am careful with my phone. Apple case has a nice lip so your screen will be safe. How's everyone finding the 5s surround/chamfered edges? Are they as fragile as the 5, getting marks and scuff? Will the Apple leather case for still with some lucky skins around edge of a Zagg or Bestskinever skin on?
um....no?

I use lucky skin edge pro with a clear back that I got with my Mime glass protector I believe and it seems like a good match.
