Perhaps you should get a dictionary and look up how to spell the word 'perhaps.'

Oh, and durability is component of quality ;).

No. You don't understand what the word quality means. Quality is the degree of excellence something achieves in it's intended use.

You're confusing value with quality. Poor quality is when something is intended to be durable and fails. Poor value is when something is intended NOT to be durable and you want it to be. The Apple leather cases are not designed to have a durable finish. They are purposely designed to show wear and tear. Apple spent more money and went out of their way to make to make these cases show wear and tear and warns consumers about this design choice on the box.

Apple has decided that it likes the look of aged leather, and your case is designed to age with use.

Case is only worth about $4.99 with free shipping. Anyone who bought it got robbed.

Then you haven't seen one of these up close and have no sense of quality.

um....no?

For some odd reason, if apple makes it, people believe it has to be God's greatest creation. Heres the thing: those apple cases will NOT wear evenly...the corners will wear but what about the back? nope. it will look uneven. Heck, on the lighter colored models, the corners will look very dirty. I had the brown case, although its a nice case, its definitely not worth $40. Should be worth $20. Its not like they use a premium leather either, its a cheaper leather. If you've owned a expensive leather you would know.

Overall, is it a good case? yes it is. Is it worth $40? no its worth half of that. theres a difference between quality leather wearing, and cheap leather wearing...

That's the idea. It's supposed to wear along the edges more. That's how "grunge" is added in art.

I'm a product designer that specializes in creating leather goods. What you're saying is simply not true . Their costs could be 5 times lower if they went with a more durable material.

Again Apples leather is not cheap. It's two thirds of the way to the most expensive kind that money can buy off the mass market. Anything better would be high end ultra fine leather or hand tanned custom material.

Perhaps this will help educate some...

Pure Aniline Leather

Pure Aniline is the finest leather available, made from thick full grain hides. Full, or top grain leather is considered the very best, and is priced accordingly. This high end leather is classified as 'unfinished' because it is colored strictly with dyes, while other leathers are categorized as 'finished' since they undergo a secondary coloring process. Pure Aniline leathers are extremely beautiful, soft and supple to the touch, and rich in color. They develop a lovely patina over time. The leather's natural beauty is accentuated by the dye, giving the furniture a luxurious look and feel. Only the finest hides can qualify to be unfinished, so unsurprisingly, it's the most expensive type of leather.

While no doubt they are the nicest, pure aniline leathers are also the most difficult to maintain. They look great with age, but must be conditioned. Also, due to their porous nature and to the fact that they don't have a protective coating, they stain quite easily and scratches are hard to hide. If this leather is exposed to too much sunlight, the color fades quickly.

I'm curious as to where on apples website or on the box it says what type if leather it is?

Thanks for the above post Krabba, great info.

For those calling this case cheap, not well made, junk ect ect are crazy. This is by far one of the best built cases I've seen/used. How did they mold this thing to fit like it does? I understand the frustration with the discoloration but it's the nature of the leather.

I do agree however the case is too expensive but what sold by apple isn't?

That's the point I'm trying to make: it's a nice case but too expensive

You are quite welcome. I did a bit of research on aniline leather prior to my purchase and after reading the disclaimer on the Apple site.

You also said Apple did not use a "premium leather", which I believe I've shown to be inaccurate.

No, there are different types of finishes that can be used on full grain leather. Aniline is one of them but there are other finishes like semi aniline that can work better at preventing scuffs or marks without causing a patina effect. A $200 Gucci case made of full grain leather will have a finish that makes that case much more durable and less prone to scratches. That's premium leather. If apple can make a leather case for less than $40 (they have a profit margin to maintain) then everything would have this "premium" leather but it doesn't. Premium leather doesn't wear like apples case does. Don't be fooled by marketing. Apple is really good at it.

I see. We are talking about a $40 Apple case, not a $200 Gucci case so clearly there will be differences in what "premium" will mean. My point is that at the $40 price point, it is a premium leather case.

It seems it didn't work for you but you think at $20 it would have. Fair enough. Many seem to believe it is worth $40. I happen to think it is one of the best cases available at any price point and that opinion has nothing to do with marketing.

It's actually plastic covered in a thin layer of leather.

How's everyone finding the 5s surround/chamfered edges? Are they as fragile as the 5, getting marks and scuff?

Will the Apple leather case for still with some lucky skins around edge of a Zagg or Bestskinever skin on?

I've had no issues but I am careful with my phone. Apple case has a nice lip so your screen will be safe.
I use lucky skin edge pro with a clear back that I got with my Mime glass protector I believe and it seems like a good match.

A quality leather case will cost you $80-$120. Not $40. For $40 bucks they are worth it. $20 will get you a plastic case or a cheap ebay leather case.

Good to know thanks. So the Apple case fits on/off fine with edge protectors on yeh?

The same is true for pretty much any other case bought at the regular retail price. Do you really think that a case you buy for $30 cost the company $30 to make? Cases tend to be expensive ... that's just the way it is.

That being said, what something is worth is highly subjective. How much something cost to make does not equal how much it is worth. In the end the consumer makes the final decision. I paid $1000 for my 5s. My husband doesn't think it is worth that much. I do, which is why I handed apple my money.

Can't believe all this fighting about a case..

At any rate, it hits all the marks for me, and that is rare to find something on the market that fulfills all my requirements. Can't be unhappy about that.

Is this case over-priced? Of course it is, all cases are over-priced but personally it's the best case I've tried.
I love the red on grey phone and the fit and feel is perfect.

So I usually carry my phone in a pouch but Best Buy has the Platinum Series - Case with Holster for Apple iPhone 5 and 5s on sale for $10 this weekend. I opened the box to see if the holster works as I don't need the case and it fits beautifully with the Apple Cover..

The holster is just like a thinner version of the Lifeproof holster, minus the locking mechanism.. Anyways if anyone is looking for a holster that will show off your new leather case.. Check Bestbuy. Its normally a $34.99 set, but again they had it in a bargain bin for $10 this weekend.
