Still no word of this coming to thw UK though. NFC adoption is pretty poor here.

In fact I am still not sure this is quicker or easier than a chip and pin card.

Hmm, I've found NFC to be in quite a lot of places.
Sainsburys, Tesco, Whsmith, McDonald's, Pret a Manger, café Nero, Greggs, Eat, Uppercrust and I'm sure there's more that I haven't been in.

Granted most of them are food related but that's probably because of the £20 (iirc) limit for contactless payments.

Whereabouts do you live? From what I see NFC terminals are in most shops.

There are a lot of contactless payment spots all over the UK already so it is a matter of vendors, credit card and financial entities to get onboard Apple's service.

Here's an extract from a Macworld article on the matter:

Apple Pay FAQs: When will Apple Pay launch in the UK?
It looks like it won't arrive here until next year. Visa has said it's working with Apple to bring Apple Pay to Europe in 2015.

According to V3, the company has not yet confirmed a date for the European rollout of Apple Pay, but Pedro Sousa, head of contactless and mobile payment for Visa, said the service will reach Europe next year. So that's something.

In any case, those banks and almost all of the companies mentioned above are international operations, and it should be relatively easy to bring Apple Pay across the pond if it proves successful in the US. Eddie Cue said Apple is "working hard to bring it to even more countries". ("Even more"? Even more than one? Hmmm.)

AppleInsider reports that a deal has been struck to bring Apple Pay to China, too.

Now all I need is my bank to get on board. Apparently only the debit and credit cards from American Express, BOA, Wells Fargo, Capital One, Chase, and Citi will work with Apple Pay at this time.

Exactly.

I bank with a small regional bank... so they're definitely not on that list.

But I'm hoping more banks hop on board!

Just recently went to cardiff, TK MAxx didn't have nfc, Debenhams didn't have NFC, M&S didn't have NFC, John Lewis didn't have NFC, to be frank, i've yet to see an NFC terminal in Wales.

Well that's Wales for you. They are everywhere in London.

I do wonder how it'll work in the UK.
With the current £15-£20 limit, would apple pay also be limited to that?
If not, would there be a way to limit contactless cards still, whilst not limiting apple pay, with them being the same kinda of technology?

Well I live in Wales and Tesco, Greggs, McDonald's, Co-op, sainsburys to name a few all have it. There are other stores too that I can't remember off the top of my head

Any word if this requires internet to use?

Some shops seem to be made of lead and you can't get any reception inside.

I would think they would have to be limited, as the contactless option doesn't became available once you hit the limit, at wilkos if you spend 14 quid, the terminal says insert card or present contactless card, but if you spend 16 quid it only says insert card.... They would either have to remove the limit, or Apple pay will have to be limited.

Question for our American cousins, do you only have the option of NFC payments if the total is below a certain amount?

It seems to be more a matter of promotion than them existing. The only one I'm aware of due to the actual store saying "we take contactless payment" is McDonalds. Neither do the banks promote they've sent you a NFC card.

My elderly mother just last week got a debit card that was NFC equipped yet there was no mention of it in anything other than the small print. I also found out only by seeing someone use contactless at her local co-op that they had the facility. No signage in the shop, not even a symbol on the keypad. Not one bit of information to say NFC/contactless was available in the store.

Both systems are ideal for my mother who's main fear was forgetting her PIN and the embarrassment of doing so. Yet the solution already existed but I had to search it out.

More promotion of the availability of these systems would seem to be a priority to help it succeed.

I get the impression (from somewhere, I can't remember) that Apple Pay will require an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. Why not the 5S - that has TouchID .. ? Or have I got that wrong?

With Apple Pay you are authorising with your finger print, so there is no need to have a limit.

Only the iPhone 6 / 6+ has the NFC chip to take payments. There is an option to pay with the :apple:watch, but I'm not sure if that mechanism works on the 5/5S

Just to add, my local Aldi and Lidl both have NFC enabled card readers.

Yep, I think that would have to be the case, otherwise it's a hell of an investment for something that'll only be used for buying lunch.

Besides, if Apple are using it in their own stores, there's not a lot in there you can buy for less than £20!

interesting question. I'd imagine it wouldn't on your phone but obvious the POS at the store would need to be wired. apple was pretty adamant about them not storing your data and whatnot and everything needed for NFC to work is built into the phone so it shouldn't. I obviously don't know but just speculating.

Apples finally smart :) yay

Who would want to carry a huge ipad round with them they need to lift up with two hands to use Apple Pay with NFC.

I'm glad they decided this, and hope NFC never comes to iPad...... Apple would have more brains by keeping it in the iPhone's since its intended use as a kind-of small-still mobile..

However at 5.5-inch ? How can u say that is small anymore ?

I'm not saying there should be a limit, what I'm saying is the way terminals are in the UK the "contactless" option doesn't enable if the cost of the items is over the limit, so you won't be able to do it (unless it can be overridden by the till operator

u mean the daily limit imposed by the banks ?

I'm excited about Apple pay but I'll admit with iOS8.0.1gate you won't see me use Apple Pay until iOS8.1.2
That's just silly talk. There are no guarantees in life. If you wait or not there is always room for human error. 8,0.1 was a result of Apple trying to give us consumers everything we want.

If I could store my drivers license in my phone then this would really be great. When is that happening?

Quick question: Don't have a 6 or 6 plus, but does Apple Pay allow you to pay with not Apple Pay merchants? So if you wanted to buy from Wegmans instead of Whole Foods, would the transaction continue?

Yes, you can use all tap to pay merchants. In other words every store that you can use google wallet you can use apple pay.

You could just take a picture of it..

Still wouldn't substitute for having the real one on your person in case you need to provide ID.
