That's just silly talk. There are no guarantees in life. If you wait or not there is always room for human error. 8,0.1 was a result of Apple trying to give us consumers everything we want.

I think we wanted cellular service and touch ID.

A little help here?

Can someone please explain to me why previous generation iPhones and iPads are being cut out of using Apple Pay for online purchases? Clearly I can't do contactless payments with my 5s because no NFC, but what's the deal otherwise? Is this just an artificial limitation to get people to buy new phones?

Aha. So does Apple sponsor the implementation of those companies' terminals (the ones in the Keynote), or do they buy them themselves? Do they have some sort of contract with Apple?

Every store is in the process of buying new ones. After the Target and Home Depot breach, credit card companies moved up the date for credit cards with chips on them.

I'm not saying there should be a limit, what I'm saying is the way terminals are in the UK the "contactless" option doesn't enable if the cost of the items is over the limit, so you won't be able to do it (unless it can be overridden by the till operator

This should be an easy fix on the POS device. Remember the limit raised from £15 to £20 without too much fuss.

Do you mean new ones as in replacing existing ones? I know I sound stupid but one thing I do know is that places like Wegmans and even McDonalds have had NFC terminals way before Apple Pay. I'm not saying Apple Pay isn't revolutionary but the terminals have been there.

It might have something to do with the secure enclave for cards.#

If it's NFC enabled terminal then it should work with Apple Pay. To the reader the iPhone 6 is just another NFC enabled card.

The old NFC terminals were crap, only worked half the time. The new ones are a lot better. And everyone is replacing the old ones as they are not safe to use. This replacement has nothing to do with Apple, Apple is just in the right place at the right time...

They have to work with Apple's System. Apple is using a token when you pay, the store needs to know what to do with this token...

I think that makes sense, thanks. Not to mention the fact (and I don't know much about NFC technology) that the hardware components themselves are probably somewhat dated

Can't find Apple Pay (iPhone 6)

So I updated my iPhone 6 to 8.1 and launched Passbook to NOT find Apple Pay setup. Any ideas?

This feature alone may be the my reason to update from my 5S (that I like a lot) to the 6. We'll see how it goes!

So, you DID NOT read the entire article?

Thanks for telling me what I didn't do! I read it and it said that "Apple has not yet flipped the switch to seed it to developers". If that were true, then how would've Hamza Sood been able to access it??

Nobody knows. That's obvious as well if you just look around a bit before posting.

ApplePay is the iPhone 6 feature that I'm sold on to replace my iPhone 5 but there's been no word on availability in Canada.
Maybe I'll get an Apple Watch to tide me over for another year but I hope it doesn't take too long. Canadian retailers already have an extensive NFC payment network.

I get the impression (from somewhere, I can't remember) that Apple Pay will require an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. Why not the 5S - that has TouchID .. ? Or have I got that wrong?

If you have an Apple Watch paired to a iPhone 5/5S/5C, you will be able to use it, per the Apply Pay page on Apple's website. But you can't use it with the iPhone 5-series phones alone.

No Touch ID authorization and the lack of a Secure Element

Exactly.

I bank with a small regional bank... so they're definitely not on that list.

But I'm hoping more banks hop on board!

If your credit/debit card issuer is on board, you should be set. Not too sure on that though. ;)

Now all I need is my bank to get on board. Apparently only the debit and credit cards from American Express, BOA, Wells Fargo, Capital One, Chase, and Citi will work with Apple Pay at this time.

Now, If your debit card or credit card from your bank is a Visa or MasterCard it will work. Every single bank in the country does not need to be on board.

I do wonder how it'll work in the UK.
With the current £15-£20 limit, would apple pay also be limited to that?
If not, would there be a way to limit contactless cards still, whilst not limiting apple pay, with them being the same kinda of technology?

I'm pretty sure the limit is imposed by your bank (similar to the cash withdrawal limit). It's not hard wired into the nfc readers.

Hmmm. That screen shot says "when you use Apple Pay, information about your card, device and location will be sent to Apple and your bank." (Paraphrased)

I thought the whole point was that Apple didn't know where you bought something.

Correct. For taking payments, You'd still want something like Square.. Which will also take Apple Pay in their new terminals they have announced. I have a Square merchant account, so easy to keep one, even for the casual business transaction where you only do hobbyist side jobs, to pay for that beer, etc. Apple is not competing against the likes of Square.. as Square is a company that takes many forms of payments and is focused on that. Soon NFC / Apple Pay.

Apple is actually competing against standalone payment businesses like PayPal. PayPal would much prefer you use them and their PayPal Credit (Used to be BillMeLater, PayPal's version of a CC).. Currently, PayPal is left out of this for the immediate future.

Square treated my non-profit like crap. Because we had a dry spell where people just weren't donating, they canceled our account without warning and when I contacted them to protest and try to reopen it, they wouldn't allow me to because we weren't meeting minimum standards or some such thing.

I understand that they need to make their fees, but our account wasn't costing them anything, and it certainly isn't making them anything now since it no longer exists.
