New Apple Pen could be fun purchase.
Though Painting/Drawing isn't favoured being Left Handed.
I could see self Xmas gift.
Always couldn't justify what was costly gift.

An upgrade over the 1st gen Pencil but not a true successor to the 2nd gen. Expecting to see a new 3rd gen Pencil with new features released along with the upcoming iPad Pros.

It's not that confusing.

The Pencil 1 still exists and Apple sells it.

Don't be so dramatic, it's not much worse than the Pencil 1. All it lost was pressure sensitivity which shouldn't be a big deal for people who want a basic Pencil from Apple.

It is: ask a consumer to buy an iPad with Apple pencil and chances are big they will buy something that is not compatible. You need a freakin table to find out. It is ridiculous. “It just works” my ass.
Edit: so pencil 1 is 8 years old and pencil 2 is 5 years old. After all those years, and “innovation”, this is what Apple comes up with. 20 dollar price cut on a 8 year old pencil and lacking features of that one. If you knowingly buy this thing you like being ripped off.

It’s a cheaper Apple Pencil that works with all usb-c iPads. What is so hard to understand?

Perhaps we ought to see this as Pencil SE: ‘A Pencil experience at a price you’ll love’. I can almost hear an Apple VP announcing it in a video shot in a design studio…

Doubt this will be stacking up well against the cheaper offerings on Amazon though. Ok the knock offs probably no hover and the sleep mode gestures are likely no go. But for a big old chunk of change more than a No Name effort from some Chinese tech mill? Only reason I chucked my cheapo was build quality and QC sucked and I scooped a lightly used (still boxed) Pencil 1.

It is not rocket science, but it is plain stupid: so somewhat older lightning iPad does not work with this. It does work with pro level iPads, but usually these people need the pencil 2 (or pressure sensitive penc 1) features. “pencil 3” is newer (ie “better”) but then lacks important features. So for who the heck is this thing?? Buyers of recent usbc iPads, who need a pencil I guess? Let me ask: if this would be Microsoft doing the same with their surface and pencils you would think this is stupid, am I right?

I made a fairly extensive response to this earlier so I won’t repeat myself here.

Post in thread 'New Apple Pencil Announced With Hidden USB-C Port and More for $79'

Maybe all this wouldn’t have been an issue if Apple hadn’t released the 10th gen iPad, but would you rather the new usb-c Apple Pencil work only with said model, or be compatible with all usb-c iPads?

I am not sure what exactly people were expecting here. Were you all expecting a more expensive, premium model with more features and functionality? There was nothing wrong with the 2nd gen Apple Pencil (and Apple has done a great job of keeping compatibility with pro and air models).

It’s the release of a single stylus, and I feel that people attempting to insinuate that this is somehow evidence of Apple leadership losing the plot are grasping at straws, IMO.

Imagine buying this Apple Pencil to save $$$ and having to pull the cap and plug it in to charge versus slapping it on the side and not even thinking about it? Not sure if that's worth the savings.
The internet: The Pencil 1 sucks because you need an adapter to charge it with a cable and you can lose the cap.

Apple: We fixed those things.

The internet: Why did you fix those things?

PS. If you don't think it’s worth saving $40, buy the Pencil 2.

I have tried several of them and they all work exactly the same in terms of writing and drawing, the only difference is in other features like charging (USB C or magnetic), short or long press to turn them on etc, weight and shape (although they virtually all look like pencil 2).
Again people ignore that these use the exact same technology like the Logitech crayon, fullstop.

Neither purchase is inherently better,, it comes down to what the individual user values. With Apple or Logitech you have some assurance of a level of quality and warranty. My experience with knockoffs is some are just fine and others junk. That's not to say I don't buy knockoffs, but am aware of the tradeoffs.

The only ones that don't work the same are the passive / semi-passive ones, the ones that "work" with other tablets too, those are garbage.

Part of the purchase decision is wading through the garbage. Not everyone wants to do that to save some money.

As for "price is your determining factor", I could say the same for a drug vs its generic counterpart, some people feel safer using the original drug and pay more, but the generic one works exactly the same.

That's the beauty of having choices; everyone gets to decide what is best for them.

- your are not saving a few euros, you are literally paying 5 times less...

In this case, while five times sounds like a big savings, it's not that much money in terms of actual cost difference.

That is actually an interesting behavioral economics point. People will view saving say 60 Euros on a 75 Euro price a significant savings while the same 60 Euros on a 2000 Euro sale as much less; when it's the same amount of money n either case.

Seems like this was done to get rid of Lightning. As a bonus, owners of the 10th generation iPad now get to attach their pencils magnetically. As for all other current iPad owners, they have the option to save some cash if they are willing to give up the more advanced features.

You are the ideal customer for Apple, they'll make a lot of money out of people that think like this... Good for them.
Wading though the garbage is very easy in this case, if they say compatible with iPads from 2018 on, then it's Logitech technology.
And by the way, apparently in euros it's not just 60 but more like 80 since this pencil is priced at €95...

And subsequently it’s less expensive.

Buy the 1 or 2 if you need that feature.
Again: the pencil 1 is 8 years old (!!). A general consumer sees that Apple comes out with a new “upgrade” pencil (usbc), which you would assume is at least as good and has all the features of a 8 year old product. But no...
On top of that: this cheapest pencil does not work with the cheapest iPad (9th) that is still being sold on the Apple website. Must be drinking some strong Apple Koolaid to defend this mess. Do not get me wrong: Apple has some excellent products: my M1pro 14 is *cheff kiss*. But sometimes Apple is just acting drunk (hi butterfly keyboard and turn over to charge Magic Mouse).
