This appears to be a replacement for the first gen pencil, i.e., as a lower cost alternative to the second gen pencil. It only charges using USB-C, but will still attach to the side of an iPad like the more expensive model will. It will work with any iPad with a USB-C port according to the specs.

The first gen is still for sale at a higher price. It has pressure sensing which this new low-cost model does not. The new one support hovering on iPad Pros which the first gen doesn't.

Umm... It doesn't respond to pressure. So this definitely isn't for artists. I'm guessing this is just for note takers. Here's the graph

Oh wow that's like something entirely else than what the rumors said it would be.

Very weird pricing as well (taken the actual street prices of the apple pencil 1 and 2), for who or what is this?

Can we talk about the PRICE CUT without a reduction of functionality or selling the last-gen version??

EDIT: Take that back, it lacks a number of features of the 2nd gen. Seemed to good to be true for Apple.
You expect way too much from a company that's amassed 3 trillion dollars. They didnt get to that kind of wealth by doing the right thing.

Looks a lot like the Hommie pencil I bought for less than half the price. Identical functionality or lack of functionality (pressure sensitivity).

I can say though that I never had any use for pressure sensitivity (owned the 1st gen pencil before). So in general this is a great option for note takers that still want something from Apple.

so there will be another pencil release to update it to gen 3/usb-c.
The Gen 2 doesn't need an update currently as it doesn't have a physical connector.
What a worthless product . Just Buy the Apple Pencil 2 for $85 on sale regularly….
Unless you have the iPad, which doesn't support wireless charging. 🤦‍♂️

I'll eat crow on this one. I totally did not expect them to release an accessory separate from a minor or major product revision. All the more weird because the product has an odd value proposition that nobody would reflect on if there was new hardware to talk about...

Is this compatible with the iPad (10th generation)? If so, this is perfect for my girlfriend. The new iPad has USB-C. I bought her that iPad and wasn't going to get her the Lightning Apple Pencil. If this new pencil is compatible, then she'll be able to charge it with the USB-C port on her iPad.
