They say this new one still needs or can be paired, not sure why that would be needed? The Logitech Crayon doesn't need to be paired.

Is this compatible with the iPad (10th generation)? If so, this is perfect for my girlfriend. The new iPad has USB-C. I bought her that iPad and wasn't going to get her the Lightning Apple Pencil. If this new pencil is compatible, then she'll be able to charge it with the USB-C port on her iPad.
Yes. This was clearly designed for the 10th gen iPad.

Naming naming NAMING!

Why do we have:
  • Apple Pencil (2nd generation)
  • Apple Pencil (USB-C)
  • Apple Pencil (1st generation)
Surely you simplify it to something like
  • Apple Pencil Pro/Ultra/Max (or something that makes it higher tier)
  • Apple Pencil (USB-C)
  • Apple Pencil (Lightning)
1st and 2nd generation are so confusing if there's USB-C?!

Maybe Apple Pen? 😆

Your girlfriend is in luck

Hover but no tilt like for 1st and 2d gen?
What the hell is the logic here

Apple often offers several versions of the same basic product. Want more features? Then simply pay for them. Don't need more features? Save some money and get the lower cost version. Easy. It's nice having options.

Just like an iPhone Pro Max with more features costs more than an iPhone.

Well this is disappointing. I was really looking forward to an Apple Pencil 3 with those new tips. It would have been killer for my art process.

It is probably because they intend on axing the Apple Pencil (Lightning) in a year or less and they do have an Apple Pencil Pro in the works. This USB-C option consciously carved out a niche below the premium option. I imagine the new one may cost more than what it replaces.

Crazy to think that they are keeping the Apple Pencil (1st Generation) and at the same $99 price to boot! Which sane person wants to pay $20 extra to continue charging their pencil with a lightning-USB C adapter and no magnetic attachment just to have pressure sensitivity?

A lower cost Pencil with considerably reduced features. Same size and weight.

it's a good alternative to first gen. model.

They still need the 1st gen for the iPad 9th generation (which is still on sale and is a popular iPad)

Can we talk about the PRICE CUT without a reduction of functionality or selling the last-gen version??

EDIT: Take that back, it lacks a number of features of the 2nd gen. Seemed to good to be true for Apple.

The miss-match of features doesn't make sense (For example the USB-C pencil supporting 'hover on iPad Pro', but not pressure sensativity is really odd. But it does make sense for Apple to continue selling all 3 versions. Right there, there people with iPads that are barely a year old that don't support USB-C, so would need the Gen 1. Expect to see that around for a while longer yet as folks typically keep their iPads 3-4 years minimum.

Weird that they'd roll this out right now...a cheap"er" pencil that appeals to more people. They must expect a waive of buyers of Apple Pencils in the near future. Could they be making it useable on the iPhone soon via software?
