This new Apple Pencil model appears to be an Apple version of the Logitech Crayon as far as features and functionality is concerned, but with a sleeker design. I probably would had bought this pencil rather than the USB-C version of the Logitech Crayon if it were available a year ago. I have no need for pressure sensitivity with how I use it.

Why such a confusing lineup for a simple accessory?

Seriously. We now have 4 iPads of very similar physical size, and 3 Pencils.

iPad 10.2”
iPad 10.9”
iPad Air 10.9”
iPad Pro 11”

Apple Pencil (2nd gen)
Apple Pencil (USB-C)
Apple Pencil (1st gen)

I can see how they end up here but could they honestly not put more of an effort to simplify this stuff? I've been in the store witnessing someone wanting to buy an iPad and being confused by all the options. The store employee explaining the differences really didn't help the issue either.

Really feel like they should have found a way to make the 2nd gen Pencil work with the 10th gen iPad so that all new designs had the same pencil. And then eventually just retire the 9th gen iPad along with the older 1st gen Pencil.

So it has less features than the others two...

I think the way to make this make sense is to think ahead – Apple are likely to stop selling the Apple Pencil (1st generation) as soon as they are no longer shipping an iPad with Lightning. At the moment, a Lightning version is still needed.

Then, if you crop that comparison table from your screenshot to remove the Apple Pencil (1st generation) column, all becomes a lot more logically balanced – Apple Pencil (USB-C) as the low-cost basic option, and Apple Pencil (2nd generation) as the premium 'Pro' option with more features.

Weird that they'd roll this out right now...a cheap"er" pencil that appeals to more people. They must expect a waive of buyers of Apple Pencils in the near future. Could they be making it useable on the iPhone soon via software?
Would be cool and a surprise way to boost interest mid season. Max height is 159 mm and the new pencil is 155mm long so it is a fit.

It is probably because they intend on axing the Apple Pencil (Lightning) in a year or less and they do have an Apple Pencil Pro in the works. This USB-C option consciously carved out a niche below the premium option. I imagine the new one may cost more than what it replaces.

Apple is still selling 30-pin accessories today. I would be surprised if Lightning Pencil gets deleted in less than five years.

I'm with everyone who thinks this should have been released with the 10th gen iPad. If the modern iPad has USB C, you think the Apple Pencil for it would have it too instead of this dinky little adapter for the Lightening Apple Pencil.

It's a neat improvement on the Pencil 1, I just don't get why they didn't discontinue the old Pencil 1, especially since it's retaining it's price. Feels pretty confusing for customers.

Crazy to think that they are keeping the Apple Pencil (1st Generation) and at the same $99 price to boot! Which sane person wants to pay $20 extra to continue charging their pencil with a lightning-USB C adapter and no magnetic attachment just to have pressure sensitivity?

That crowd posting in every thread about iPhone 15 going USB-C with comments about lint magnet, wobbly, fragile tongue, etc? Yes, they seem to have just about evaporated since Apple actually rolled out the change but they were so passionate about it even days before the launch. Clearly, this fragile, lint magnet, wobbly is NOT for them. ;)

People need to read the link in the article.

This is not a replacement or next generation product. It's a lower tier product. It drops the following features:

- Pressure sensitivity
- Magnetic pairing & charging (it can be stored, but not charged/paired)
- Double tap to change tools
- Engraving
Does it work on the low end iPad? Or are we still stuck with the first gen with that weird charging adapter for that?

What a worthless product . Just Buy the Apple Pencil 2 for $85 on sale regularly….

If the version 1 and 2 products have regularly gone on sale for $20+ cheaper , it is pretty likely this one will too after the initial demand bubble.

It is likely aimed in part at organizations that do bulk iPad buying for users that use it to replace "pencil/pen and paper" use cases. It likely will get volume discounts for them also.

Everything doesn't have to be for the artist , commercial drawing community.

This product probably should have been introduced back when the iPad 10th gen first initially came out instead of a dongle.

The hidden USB-C port is what they _should_ have done with the Lightning port on the first generation, very elegant solution if you can't offer magnetic charging for whatever reason.

Letting the Apple Pencil (USB-C) work with the iPad 9th generation via a USB-C to lightning cable instead would be better, no? Seeing that the iPad comes with the cable when you buy it.

I guess, but because of the design you can’t magnetically store this new pencil on the 9th gen iPad.

I wouldn't. Apple only offers a 30-pin to USB-A cable and it isn't universally available at every Apple Store location. I was in an Apple Store in Birmingham, Alabama last Friday and they didn't even have Apple branded lightning to USB-C cables on display anymore. They had Belkin and Mophie options that were solid alternatives but they're already trying to deemphasize lightning by the looks of it to me.

Good idea, this is a much more convenient pencil for the 10th gen iPad than this:

It also gives a cheaper option to the rest of the USB-C iPads.

I feel like this makes the product line of the Apple Pencil very confusing. They should have gotten rid of the 1st generation Pencil, and have this new version have pressure sensitivity. Otherwise, you basically have a 1st generation pencil that has one feature -- pressure sensitivity -- that this new generation can't do. SMH.
