They REMOVED the wireless magnetic charging.
WTF?!
they havent removed anything.

Read it again.

This is the 'budget' version so no wireless charging only wired via USBC now. The magnet is there to attach to the iPad but not charge.

If you want wireless charging you have the option of the more expensive model.

So this is a 1.5 Pencil, with no wireless charging, or pressure sensitivity(which Pencil 1 has), but magnetically attaches for storages? I feel like the pressure sensitive thing was a very important thing for drawing, like the most important feature of a pencil.

I think folks are missing the point here. This release is not meant for the high-end user but for the kids with the gen01 compatible iPads worldwide. Not everyone requires the pro-tier line. These are for the teacher who keeps going crazy b/c students keep losing the endcaps of the gen01 pencils.
I actually mentioned something similar in a thread about ipad and apple pencil for kids. :)

If you are not sketching or pursuing art professionally.

I have a third party pencil that my kids use. Occasionally they also use my pencil 2 but the brushed they use don't utilise pressure sensetivity. They don't care about the feature.

Shame this wasn't released a year ago with the iPad that needed it. Still, this shouldn't need to exist - all iPads should support magnetic charging.

Really feel like they should have found a way to make the 2nd gen Pencil work with the 10th gen iPad so that all new designs had the same pencil. And then eventually just retire the 9th gen iPad along with the older 1st gen Pencil.
This made me just realize that when Apple inevitably discontinues the 1st gen Pencil, 10th gen iPad users will no longer be able to buy an Apple Pencil with pressure sensitivity, because their iPad will only be compatible with the cheaper Apple Pencil going forward. Granted it may be Apple’s conscious business decision and most 10th gen users probably won’t miss pressure sensitivity anyway, but it’s unfortunate for that iPad to lose functionality. It would be nice if the 11th gen is compatible with Pencil 2 (or maybe 3 by then), but I doubt the entry iPad will support Pencil wireless charging/pairing any time soon. Maybe the more likely hope is that Pencil 3 (and 4 and so on) will support usbc charging/pairing in addition to wireless.

I bet the 3rd Gen Apple Pencil launches with the OLED iPad Pros and new Magic Keyboard if I had to guess. I am in no rush to replace my M1 12.9 iPad Pro, and the gen 2 pencil does everything I want, but I do draw on my iPad and would love the rumored magnetic tips. I used to sketch a lot early in med school using Notability. Here are three of my drawings from Anatomy head/neck exam notes. Notability actually reached out to me to use these on the App Store. I screen shot the App Store when they were on the App home page.

RIP Apple Pencil 3 hopes.

Maybe this week will be like a couple years ago where we get a new product release each day Tues-Thurs or Fri. I think that was October 2021? Was it last year? Was it 2020? I don’t quite remember. I think one of the releases was new colors for HomePod mini? Anyway, maybe this week I’ll be like that

What a strange product.
Reading the introduction literally spells out how much of a mess this line-up is.
“Apple Pencil (1st generation) works with iPad (10th generation), and the Lightning port on iPad (9th generation) makes it easy to quickly connect Apple Pencil (1st generation) for pairing and charging.”
Apple, what are you saying?

“iPad users can pick the perfect Apple Pencil that is compatible with their iPad model, including Apple Pencil (2nd generation), Apple Pencil (USB-C), and Apple Pencil (1st generation).”

Apple loves their adjectives, Pro, Max, Ultra… this is where they should actually be used!

“Apple Pencil SE” would have been better, giving the best version of the pencil a “Pro” would have been fine, but what is this strategy?

Examples? Have you been able to directly compare them to this one yet?
I have 2 of them, not bought on Amazon, but one of them for $15 and the other for $40 (but that one has magnetic charging). They all work exactly the same as the pencil as they use the Logitech crayon tech, which is now available to anyone. They only lack pressure and double tap.

I was thinking the same thing.

I own an Apple Pencil 2 but also a cheaper alternative from Amazon that I purchased for £24. The cheaper pen is identical in use and feel - even charges magnetically.

The only thing it’s missing is pressure sensitivity and double tap.
There is too much ignorance unfortunately about this and people buy expensive pencils without knowing these perfect clones exist. My guess is that they believe these are like those airpods clones, who are the same in shape but not in terms of sound, mike etc. While these are exactely the same, except for pressure...
Just look at all the "awesome" comments here, shows how people don't have a clue

this is clearly a product to kill the market for Logitech and other brands making cheaper Apple Pencil with less features. It's doesn't even replace the first gen. But they made the lineup needless complex, maybe they are phasing out all lightning iPads soon.

It's not though, because it doesn't have pressure sensitivity. Which makes it practically useless for art. And they'll keep selling the Gen 1.

A baffling product.
not really, if you are using it for art the gen 2 as mentioned in the comments are always on sale for $99, get that one.. seriously if you still want a gen 1 because of pressure sensitivity to save some money have at it. Someone who wants to save a little money can probably easily get their hands on a used gen 2 in amazing condition for cheaper than this new one slap on a new tip and call it a day for pressure sensitivity.

Not everyone is an artist and needs pressure sensitivity so now they have a lower cost new option while having a better charging method than gen 1. If you are an artist who needs the pressure sensitivity then save an extra $20 or go used.. it isn't that hard

P.S. Owner of a gen 2 pencil here

I bought a cheap replacement pencil for my ipad pro as I've lost mine, in the house somewhere... and seems to offer all what this does, with a usb charger on the side... it was 11.99 on amazon... I acutally prefer not having the pressure sensitivity as I like a consistent line in procreate (I hope there is a button to turn off sensitivity when my original apple pencil eventually turns up)

People need to read the link in the article.

This is not a replacement or next generation product. It's a lower tier product. It drops the following features:

- Pressure sensitivity
- Magnetic pairing & charging (it can be stored, but not charged/paired)
- Double tap to change tools
- Engraving
Apple makes the most oddest decisions ever. They should have just replaced the 1st gen with this new one and kept pressure sensitivity. If you wanted magnetic charge and taps, then buy 2nd generation. 🤷‍♂️

Oh wow! A low-budget model! Finally, I can buy a Pe-
The new Apple Pencil features low latency and tilt sensitivity like the other Apple Pencil models, but misses out on pressure sensitivity, wireless pairing and charging, double tap to change tools, and free engraving.
...Nevermind.

No it’s not, there is one single iPad overlapping when it comes to compatibility between the first gen pencil and this new one: the iPad 10th generation.
