New Apple Pencil Announced With Hidden USB-C Port and More for $79

I think it does work with all iPads.

It’s compatible with all iPads that have a USB-C port.

  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch
    3rd, 4th, 5th, and
    6th generation
  • iPad Pro 11-inch
    1st, 2nd, 3rd, and
    4th generation
  • iPad Air
    4th and 5th
    generation
  • iPad mini
    6th generation
  • iPad
    10th generation

Well, I don't agree with the majority.
I think Apple has done this with the intent to silence the claims about iPad 10 pairing. Otherwise, why now, and why missing so much features?
This also serves to point out how iPad 10 should had been better.

Not exactly. It claims to work with any USB-C ipad. so Gen 1 and Gen 2 ipads of all models if that ANY USB-C ipad claim holds true............
He means that the 2nd gen will still be sold and will remain the higher end version for ipad's that are compatible with it. Apple doesn't claim this new one to be the successor of the 2nd gen pencil (or 1st one for that matter).

This is the new Pencil “SE” if you will.
My thoughts exactly. Though Apple still has a messy naming convention, they could really simplify it:
"entry"-level: SE (iPhone SE, iPad SE instead of just iPad, :apple: Pencil SE, Mac SE instead of Mac mini etc.)
regular: no-name with a number (iPhone 15, iPad 11 instead of iPad Air, Apple Pencil)
professional: pro for small and ultra for large (iPhone 15 Pro/Ultra, iPad Pro/Ultra, MacBook Pro/Ultra, Pencil Pro etc.)

As an owner of the OG iPhone SE I like to see Apple introducing "entry"-level devices, which are just a nice alternative to getting older devices (support matters).

This is certainly an Apple Pencil for note-taking and technical sketching (essentialy nothing artsy) and while the price is still high it is much more approachable than a Pencil 2 if you want a genuine Apple product instead of a 3rd party.

No wireless charging makes it useless. There's whole lot of bunch of those third party Amazon pencils offering the same for much more affordable price.

Without the pressure sensitivity, this is a completely pointless product, identical in functionality to a $20 Chinese pen – except some of the Chinese pens can be turned off and will make a charge hold 6 months – 1 year.

This is weird as hell.

Why didn't this release with iPad 10th gen a year ago to avoid this:

Though I'm also not sure the side cable situation is any more elegant, either.

So ok is apple going to do one of these new announcements every day this week kinda deal? is thats whats going on here? My guess is thats whats going on, and this is the first. Tomarrow we will get a new Ipad entry level, then a mini on thursday, friday the new air, and they will all go on pre order next week (the 27th) and be avalable on the 3rd of November...

Thats my guess!

I think "upgrade" is subjective. Some would argue that the loss of pressure sensitivity is a huge downgrade.

Of course. If you never use it and just take notes saving money is fine. Personally, I wish the Pencil 2 allowed for off device charging as it is not that strongly attached and I've already lost 1 someplace. Also wish it was available in #2 Yellow...

I literally bought a Metapen pencil a few minutes before the announcement for €32.

The Metapen is better - wireless charging for 1/3 of the price!

Totally confusing to introduce yet another pencil with yet another feature subset. Presumably they'll keep selling all of them. They had a chance to reduce the mess, and they made it bigger.
That’s what I was thinking. What’s the point of having three Pencil models available? Seems confusing to the end user. Maybe Gen 1 sticks around until there are no more Lightning iPads. Apple’s product line has gotten to be a bit of a mess again.

No. The Gen 2 remains available for the Air and Pro. This is a replacement for the Gen 1 pencil only.
Apple is also still selling the Gen 1 (Lightning) so this isn't a replacement for that, either.

Hover but no tilt like for 1st and 2d gen?
What the hell is the logic here
This includes tilt sensitivity, just not pressure.

The miss-match of features doesn't make sense (For example the USB-C pencil supporting 'hover on iPad Pro', but not pressure sensativity is really odd. But it does make sense for Apple to continue selling all 3 versions. Right there, there people with iPads that are barely a year old that don't support USB-C, so would need the Gen 1. Expect to see that around for a while longer yet as folks typically keep their iPads 3-4 years minimum.
Makes perfect sense—tilt is dependent on the Pencil hardware, whereas Hover is enabled by the iPad.
