I think it does work with all iPads.
He means that the 2nd gen will still be sold and will remain the higher end version for ipad's that are compatible with it. Apple doesn't claim this new one to be the successor of the 2nd gen pencil (or 1st one for that matter). Not exactly. It claims to work with any USB-C ipad. so Gen 1 and Gen 2 ipads of all models if that ANY USB-C ipad claim holds true............
It’s compatible with all iPads that have a USB-C port.

My thoughts exactly. Though Apple still has a messy naming convention, they could really simplify it:This is the new Pencil “SE” if you will.
and who don't know that you can buy a pencil clone with the same features for $15Interesting! So the rumors were true. $79 is also a much better price for those who don’t need fancy features.
It's not since they still will be selling the gen-1 pencil, this is a third new one in the lineup (no idea why, but here it is).NO, it's just an "improved" gen 1 pencil
At least the clones are also compatible with all lightning iPads from 2018 onIt’s compatible with all iPads that have a USB-C port.

I think "upgrade" is subjective. Some would argue that the loss of pressure sensitivity is a huge downgrade.
That’s what I was thinking. What’s the point of having three Pencil models available? Seems confusing to the end user. Maybe Gen 1 sticks around until there are no more Lightning iPads. Apple’s product line has gotten to be a bit of a mess again.Totally confusing to introduce yet another pencil with yet another feature subset. Presumably they'll keep selling all of them. They had a chance to reduce the mess, and they made it bigger.
Apple is also still selling the Gen 1 (Lightning) so this isn't a replacement for that, either.No. The Gen 2 remains available for the Air and Pro. This is a replacement for the Gen 1 pencil only.
This includes tilt sensitivity, just not pressure.Hover but no tilt like for 1st and 2d gen?
What the hell is the logic here
Makes perfect sense—tilt is dependent on the Pencil hardware, whereas Hover is enabled by the iPad.The miss-match of features doesn't make sense (For example the USB-C pencil supporting 'hover on iPad Pro', but not pressure sensativity is really odd. But it does make sense for Apple to continue selling all 3 versions. Right there, there people with iPads that are barely a year old that don't support USB-C, so would need the Gen 1. Expect to see that around for a while longer yet as folks typically keep their iPads 3-4 years minimum.
