Well... this is baffling. No wireless charging, no pressure sensitivity, so if you want to use it for art (my personal use case) it's actually not even feature competitive with gen 1. Was there supposed to be a new, cheaper, note-taking focused iPad to accompany this?

The new Apple Pencil is a cheaper model that sits below the first- and second-generation Apple Pencils in the lineup with a price tag of just $79... The new Apple Pencil features low latency and tilt sensitivity like the other Apple Pencil models, but misses out on pressure sensitivity, wireless pairing and charging, double tap to change tools, and free engraving.
So it appears to be more like Apple Pencil 1.5 with no magnetic charging (it just magnetically clips to the side) or add. features than the Pencil 2.
The Apple Pencil 2 goes on sale every so often ~$99 which is a better deal.

you are right it is a replacement of Gen 1 at a lower cost to the more feature one

Us = new iPads would be nice.....

Apple = best I can do is a watered down pencil with USB C
In the past, Apple has done a 'one press release per hour' approach to launching new products. So there's still a chance? Although a press release for new iPads with Apple Pencil update all in one go would have made the most sense.

EDIT - 'one press release per day' approach is something they've done in the past.

Make it work for the phones Apple!

I doubt it since there is no good way to attach it to an iPhone and most people don't want to carry around a pencil in tehir pocket; and making a smaller one that attaches to teh phone would require special cases and be harder to write with. Jobs had it right when he said the finger is teh perfect pointing device.

Didn’t Apple Pencil 1 have a hidden Lightning port, and people kept on losing the cap to it.

Yeah. I always thought that was a pretty janky design, for Apple. This looks much better, assuming most USB-C cables will actually fit in that gap?

Since the Apple Pencil is always blown out for Black Friday, I'm sensing a $59 red tag on this one. And this was it for the updates? I feel so used. 😂

No Pressure sensitivity? meh… those are $29 at amazon
I was thinking the same thing.

I own an Apple Pencil 2 but also a cheaper alternative from Amazon that I purchased for £24. The cheaper pen is identical in use and feel - even charges magnetically.

The only thing it’s missing is pressure sensitivity and double tap.

It's not though, because it doesn't have pressure sensitivity. Which makes it practically useless for art. And they'll keep selling the Gen 1.

A baffling product.

Awesome for 10.9 owners

people complaining don’t seem to understand this was not meant to be better than Apple Pencil 2. its really for the 10.9 iPad where the new pencil can dock magnetically and charge via the iPads and pencils usbc port

View attachment 2297089So it has less features than the others two...
No, it has one more feature than the 1st gen Apple Pencil (adds 2, loses 1). Not including pressure sensitivity might be a no-go for many people but it wouldn't matter to someone like me. I mostly use my Apple Pencil 2 for note taking and some occasional sketching where pressure sensitivity really isn't needed. I've used pressure sensitivity some times but it's not a deal breaker to me as a non-artist.

The new Apple Pencil features low latency and tilt sensitivity like the other Apple Pencil models, but misses out on pressure sensitivity, wireless pairing and charging, double tap to change tools, and free engraving. However, unlike the first-generation Apple Pencil, it does support Apple Pencil hover on the latest iPad Pro models. It is compatible with all iPad models that feature a USB-C port.

The new Apple Pencil is priced at $79 and launches in early November. The first- and second-generation Apple Pencil models continue to be available for $99 and $129, respectively.
Bah. I was excited to going back to using an Apple Pencil (primarily for the weight). My gen 1 Pencil is old, but it continues to suffer from battery drain when not in use unless I unpair it.

My Mini 5 and 9th gen iPads don't have USB-C ports so I'll continue to use my knock-off Pencils that are magnetic, use USB-C, and DON'T have to be paired. These knock-offs work great (especially at $6 USD from TEMU, $20 from Amazon) but aren't quite as heavy as the Apple Pencil.

Thanks Apple for saving me $80.😃
