This list is an updated one of metropolitan areas, US and international, that have multiple stores or stores planned. It gives a better view of Apple's plans for certain markets. It should be noted I'm using 2000 Census Bureau statistics (table 3) and metro area designations. The most important impact of the use of these figures is that Miami and West Palm Beach were then viewed as separate metro areas; they are no longer. If both areas are combined it gives a better view of Apple's obvious interest in Southeast Florida with six stores located in the area, so this is the one adjustment I've made to the table. I've added the 2000 population ranking (excluding Puerto Rico) of each U.S. area at the end of it's listing (the combining of Miami and West Palm Beach makes this the 10th largest metro area in the US.) I've also listed high-profile stores in red and stores that are confirmed by non-Apple sources in green. All other entries are from Apple's own site (existing stores and planned locations.)

US metro areas with multiple Apple stores

New York City (18) - SoHo, Staten Island, Roosevelt Field, Walt Whitman, Palisades, The Westchester, Bridgewater, Menlo Park, Rockaway, Short Hills, Tice’s Corner, Danbury Fair Mall, Garden State Plaza, Freehold Raceway (planned,) Midtown (planned,) Smith Haven Mall (planned,) Stamford Town Center (planned,) 34th Street (planned [#1045].) International metro areas with multiple stores

Toronto (3) - Yorkdale, Eaton Centre (planned,) Sherway Gardens Mall (planned.)

Tokyo (2) - Ginza, Shibuya.

London (2) - Regent Street, Brent Cross.

Manchester (2) - Trafford Centre, Arndale Centre (planned.)

note: Raleigh/Durham is the smallest metro area with two stores (excepting the special case of the already mentioned West Palm Beach/Boca Raton.) The areas with only one store (or one planned) that are larger are the following: Cleveland, Tampa/St. Petersburg, Cincinnati, Sacramento, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, San Antonio, Columbus, Charlotte, Salt Lake City, Austin, Nashville, Norfolk/Virginia Beach, and Providence. So these cities are very likely candidates for second stores in the near future. There are a few metro areas larger than Raleigh/Durham (specifically New Orleans and Greensboro) that have no stores or one officially planned. Of these two, given the level of destruction from hurricane Katrina, Greensboro seems more likely to see a store any time soon.

[*]815 Bolyston Street - Boston, Massachusetts

The Boston high-profile store will sure be awesome when it opens, its too bad wdlove isn't here to share the excitement (although he's probably already heard about it).

By the way, there is space that closed on the bottom level of the Prov place mall that is covered in white plywood, which I am assuming will be the new apple store. I'm just waiting for them to put the apple logo and "coming soon" sign up.

Great, I'll be looking forward to it. btw, I sent a pm to wdlove first thing I heard of the Boston store, so he has heard of it. I see he's posting once in a while - just not at the same rate he used to. I'm just holding my breath while the Bolyston store gets through the design process and breaks ground, and I'm sure wdlove is doing the same.

Washington DC/Baltimore (9) - Annapolis, Bethesda Row, Montgomery Mall, Towson Town Center, Clarendon, Pentagon City, Tysons Corner, The Mall at Columbia, (planned,) Fair Oaks Mall (planned.) Population rank: 4

Can't wait for the Apple store in The Mall at Columbia! :) I called the mall and they said it would open on April 1st. That would make the nearest Apple store a 10 minute drive versus an hour one.

ifoAppleStore is reporting a second Apple store in the offing for the Milwaukee area. No confirmation from Apple as of yet.
February 13, 2006
For a awhile it looked like that the 1954-vintage Bayshore Mall (Glendale, WI) would decay and die, hemmed in by I-43, a cemetery, roads and homes that prevented an expansion. But since the mall is the city’s biggest taxpayer, city officials declared eminent domain on an entire city block and paid residents and businesses $18 million to move out. Now a $200 million reconstruction is underway that will create a 400,000 s.f. Main Street-type mall, plus townhouses and condos, restaurants, offices, a theater and lots more. According to lease records, Apple will be among the tenants when the mall opens in time for this year’s holiday shopping season. The mall is about 8 miles north of Milwaukee, and also about 8 miles from the existing Mayfair in Wauwatosa, a western Milwaukee suburb.

Derby Street to open Feb. 18th

Apple has confirmed the opening of the Derby Street store on February 18th at 10:00 am.

Yo, Puckhead, are you reading this? ;) Hope you can make it and tell us all how the store looks. :D

HAHAHA, i don't know... i was planning on going home for the weekend, but an apple opening.... its tempting.... decisions decisions.....

If I can work up the desire to drive an hour for a possible free T-shirt, I'll be there (Derby St).

That assumes I'll be able to leave the house by ~8:30AM (otherwise, I don't think I'll get the shirt).

That's quite the assumption.

So... there's a ~33% chance I'll be there. My Burlington, MA shirt needs a companion, I suppose.

Ok, to be honest, I've only skimmed the posts in this particular topic, so I don't know if this has been told before. But I just found out that Apple is looking to hire people in their retail store at PROVIDENCE PLACE! It's official, and it's about time! :) I'm way too excited (Now if the store would only open next week so I can but my MacBook Pro without having to drive to Boston, that'd make things perfect!:p )

RE Apple Store in Fresno

The plans have been drawn for the new outdoor Fashion Fair Mall segment. I Can't wait !!!!

Can you please provide more information? What is your source? Fashion Fair would be a good place for an Apple store but the new outdoor expansion is well past the planning stage, it is already built out. Unless you are talking about another expansion?

Eaton's Centre (Toronto) info

Hey all I haven't checked out this thread much in the past few months... I mean we have the Yorkdale shop so I should be happy eh? While I was shopping with my fiancée at the Eaton Centre Sunday, I paused at a very large iPod ad walling off a store renovation (and had a peek in) :D From previous posts Sayhey has confirmed the new location is in the Eaton's centre, I can confirm it's location. (sadly it looks pretty far from done)
...
:( Eaton's centre map is not working!
...
Well then lets see, it's at the south end on the third level... if you enter through the Queen St. doors at street level, take the escalators up to the 3rd level and it's there on your left! :)

Now that I've moved my condo is about a 20 minute walk away... I can't wait till it opens!

Sapporo store confirmed

Apple's "Search Jobs" webpage now lists the rumored Sapporo, Japan site for an upcoming store. There are no individual job listings yet, but a location is indicated. This confirms an earlier rumor from ifoAppleStore and AppleStoreJapan.

Raid, glad you found the Eaton Centre site. Keep us posted, will you, if you see any activity indicating an impending opening? Did you see there is also an upcoming store in Montreal? Looks like Apple's retail effort in Canada is finally picking up steam.

I'll surely be stopping in to the Eaton's centre from time to time and can take a peek in when I'm there. :) I think the opening is a fair bit off though, the place just looks gutted right now with bare walls, loose wiring, and rough floors. I did hear about the Montreal store and I'm glad they are expanding elsewhere in Canada, but they should spread out as much as they can. Both coasts would probably be able to support a successful store, Vancouver is the obvious choice for the West, but maybe Halifax for the east?

...this is probably been discussed on the forums before though... maybe I should get caught up on my reading!

Calgary store?

Gary over at ifoAppleStore has posted a story claiming a new store is in the offing for Calagary, Canada. No confirmation yet.
February 22, 2006
Podcaster Shawn King announced on tonights’s broadcast of Your Mac Life that an unnamed Apple employee confirmed to him the company will open a retail store in Calgary (Canada), at the Chinook Centre mall. King remarked that Apple is notoriously secreet about the stores, and that the employee consulted others within the company before confirming the information. He noted that Vancouver was the next logical choice for a store, since it’s among the nation’s three largest cities, but chose Calgary instead, with almost 1 million residents and 5 million annual tourists.

There is now a confirmation of this rumor by Apple's "Search Jobs" webpage. Still no reappearance of the Southampton store.

edit: myMacPad, the originator of the news on Manchester has more information on both the Arndale and West Quay sites. Check it out!

Dallas store to open March 4th

Apple has confirmed that the new store in Dallas' NorthPark Center is opening this weekend March 4th at 10:00 am. This is the third store in the Dallas metro area and the seventh in Texas. The usual give away of T-shirts to the first 1,000 people is planned.

New Canadian Store!!!

Apple's "Search Jobs" webpage now lists as a retail location an upcoming store in Sherway Gardens shopping centre in Toronto, Canada. This is the third store in Toronto.

Sayhey, Gary @ www.infoapplestore.com says Tulsa on your list has a apple store planned @ woodland hills mall: here

I know. Gary has had the Tulsa rumor posted for over a year, but at this point there is no reason to believe there is any movement on the location's development. Originally, this was supposed to open by the end of 2004, so something has obviously gone wrong. If something changes and I get word of it, I'll be glad to post it. If you hear of anything, please, post it as well.

There are also rumors of stores for Dayton, Fresno, and Birmingham, but I've posted the list based on confirmed openings from Apple's own site, not rumors I can't verify.
