We are lucky here in Southern California

All within one hour driving distance I have Apple Stores at/in South Coast Plaza (where I bought my PowerMac G5 Dual 2.7 and wife iMac G5/20), Victoria Gardens, Fashion Island, Brea Mall and I think Laguna Hills.

Plus we have many authorized Apple retailers such as Microcenter, Fryes, MacGuys, etc.

Sorry, Roller, no new news on Alabama. What I do have is a new location on Apple's "Search Jobs" web page for "Southampton - West Quay." Which I take to mean this mall. This is the 7th location in the UK and the first on the south coast. It also gives us the number of locations to meet Apple's forecast of 40 by September 30th. Not that I think we necessarily have the right 40. Some of these will likely be pushed into fiscal 2007 and some other locations are likely to be posted soon that may open before September. I'll just keep posting them as they come up so we know what pool of sites to watch.

I should also say that all of the stores listed above, with the exception of this one and yesterday's announced Montreal store have individual job listings out. That starts the clock on what usually takes 6 to 9 months for an opening.

I'm being a bit slow this morning...does any one have a provisional opening date for the Southampton, UK store? I missed the Brent Cross opening and would like to think I might actually make it to one opening this year! :(

No opening date. In fact Apple has now removed the listing, after MacWorldUK and ifoAppleStore both did stories on the news. It's not the first time they have done this, and follows Apple's mania about secrecy. The listing isn't crucial to Apple's plans for a store at this time because there are no individual job openings to connect to it as of yet. I'll keep looking for the West Quay's reappearance and when the job openings are listed. When the latter take place it is usual for the store to open within 6 - 9 months. It takes that time not only for construction, but also to hire and train personnel.

i was at the derby street shops today and saw this... looks like soon their will be another apple store in MA :D

edit - any date on the smith heaven store in NY or how its coming along? hopefully it will be june so i can attend

Apple's "Search Jobs" webpage has two new listings for Apple store locations. One of the locations is the first in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area (the largest US area to date without a store) and along with the previously disclosed Fairfax location (see post #1080) will bring the total in Virginia to six.

Awesome news as there's a decent chance I could end up in Norfolk this year for pediatric residency. Yay! Now wherever I go there should be an Apple store. :)

ETA - Carrefour Laval for Montreal? I'm rather disappointed it's not anywhere near downtown. Laval's actually a separate island on the St. Lawrence (adjacent to the island of Montreal) and even growing up I've barely gone there. Shame Les Ailes de La Mode isn't exactly stable financially, or it'd have been a perfect shopping complex for Apple. Oh well.

And I also just read that Apple is planing to open a Flagship Store in Boston directly across from the Pru. on Boylston Street, supposedly 4 stories and a front made of all glass.

This will be a gold mine for Berklee Kids! Like myself!

Where did you hear that rumor? I've been waiting for such a store in Boston, Philly, and DC. If you have a link I'd love to see it.

edit: Ok I think I found it, but I sure can't vouch for the information. Is this the site your tip comes from, berkleeboy? Sounds great and I'll be watching for further news.
Major Boston Apple Store?
February 2nd, 2006
Apple is poised to announce a major retail store directly across from the Prudential Center on Boylston Street in Downtown Boston. The store is said to be Apple's most state-of-the-art store to date with 4 stories and a front made entirely of a glass. Boston's Mayor Thomas Menino is expected to announce plans for the store in the coming week

Yea that's where I got it from. I hope they are right, it's about time Boston got a big store. And that location is Perfect!

But I don't know why they would have Mayor Mumble's announce the store.....

Thanks Sayhey, I guess I'll just have to keep my ear close to the ground for now...:(

Irvine Spectrum store to open on 2/11

Apple has officially announced the opening of the Irvine Spectrum store this Saturday, February 11th at 10:00 am. The usual giveaway of the 1,000 free t-shirts will take place. This is the 16th store opened in the LA metro area (with one more - Simi Valley - known to be planned) and the 31st in the state.

Midtown store to be open 24/7?

Think Secret is reporting the upcoming Midtown store, complete with its glass cube top, will also be the first to feature around the clock service.
Apple's upcoming midtown Manhattan retail store will mark a first for the company as sources report the location will be open 24 hours a day. The store, located in the underground retail plaza of the General Motors Building on Fifth Avenue between 58th and 59th Street will also be among the first stores to offer customers an iPod Bar.

The 25,000-square-foot store will dwarf Apple's SoHo location and will be capped by a 32-foot glass cube that will stand in front of the building and house the stairs and elevators that will take customers underground to the Apple retail store.

Sources report that construction of the store is on track to be completed in April, with the store expected to open by the end of May.

Also in the news is the confirmation (by way of the Daily Camera and ifoAppleStore) from mall management company, Macerich, that there will be a store in the still under construction 29th street mall in Boulder, Colorado. This is the second Colorado store set to open this year and will be the Denver area's fourth.

Montreal store posts job listings

The upcoming Le Carrefour Laval store in Montreal, Canada has started posting individual job listings on monster.com canada's site. This starts the clock to the opening; which usually take 6-9 months. All new retail locations currently listed on Apple's website are now in staff search mode. Looks like summer will be a big time for openings.

edit: as of this afternoon, individual job listings are also on Apple's web site for the Montreal store.

  21. Suburban Square - Ardmore, Pennsylvania
  22. Summit Sierra - Reno, Nevada
  23. Freehold Raceway - Freehold, New Jersey
  24. The Pier - Atlantic City, New Jersey

  26. Rome, Italy
  27. Perimeter Mall - Atlanta, Georgia

  41. Maruzen Building - Sapporo, Japan

All the above, with the exception of Southampton, Sapporo, Toronto (Sherway Gardens,) and Omaha are - as of March 1, 2006 - already recruiting staff, which puts them on the expected timetable to open by the end of September. Southampton has disappeared from Apple's webpage at this point as well.

The following are upcoming stores confirmed by mall websites, public documents, and press reports. No word from Apple on any of these or a word on possible opening dates as of yet. Unless they get derailed by planning difficulties, they appear to be locations of future stores; all also are very unlikely for FY 2006 openings.

  1. 437 N.W. 23rd Street - Portland, Oregon
  2. 21 W. 34th Street - New York, New York
  3. 29th Street Mall - Boulder, Colorado
  4. Town Square Mall - Las Vegas, Nevada
  5. 815 Bolyston Street - Boston, Massachusetts

has this been confirmed?

Sorry, you got me. It should've read "rumored opening 2/18." As far as I know, it still not official. Not that I'd expect Apple to confirm anything until tomorrow at the earliest. ifoAppleStore seems very confident of the opening date, and this is not something I'd doubt except an overabundance of caution often is needed in all things Apple.

Personally I think it will open. The place looks pretty much done.. If it does open, I won't be able to attend, going up to NH to adopt our puppy :)

I wish they would make more stores in Western NY. The only one close to me is the Buffalo one and that's an hour and thirty minutes away. :(

Your best bet to cut down on your commute would obviously be not in western NY, but in Erie, Pennsylvania. The good news it that Apple is putting in a store in a city not too much larger than than Erie (metro pop. 280,000) with the upcoming store in Reno, Nevada (metro pop. 340,000.) The bad news is that there are 78 metro areas larger than Erie that currently don't have an Apple store or one planned. Unless there is a huge super-regional mall in your area or a tourist attraction I'm not aware of, the odds aren't good.

Good luck with the puppy. When you do get by the store tell us what you think and post a pic if you can. :)

Thanks! :) We are adopting her from the local rescue league (they are affiliated with a NH pet Smart so we have to drive up there to get her).

I will be sure to get to the Derby street store asap (my wife loves it there because of all the home decor shops so it will be easy to convince her).
