Such a minor update no one is gonna use the hfr anyways, apple could of done more to upgrade this
Small question… other than putting in an overkill A12X/A12Z chip for gaming, which, let’s face it, gaming never really took off on the Apple TV the way that Apple thought it would, I don’t know what else they could’ve added.
At least hardware wise, in terms of software I can think of some updates they could’ve made. The TV app in my opinion is all over the place

its like they know they have to make them and they want the views but they dont actually speak honest, you never hear them say what people are thinking its always showing it in a really good light, I would rather real honest hands on reviews
They're not making money from the ads... ;)

I think part of the problem was that Apple never really pushed it as a gaming device. It was pushed more as a "like puzzle games? Boy, you're gonna love them on your giant TV and our crappy little remote!"

at least a re design slimmer or something, it has hdmi 2.1 so we need games at 120fps

Just like the iPad unboxing article a day or two ago, same handful of shills, same fake looks of surprise and joy.
Well, when Apple sends them products to review, I don’t think they do it with a note that says “really give us all of your criticisms, put us in our place.”
In fact, Apple is better than most companies when it comes to early reviews of products. Some of those Youtubers were quite harsh about the iMac and it’s white bezels during the reviews earlier this week. I’m surprised Apple would allow something like that

Does anyone have an opinion of Apple TV 4k (older version or this version) vs. Android TV? My OLED has Android built in and it's ok. Wondering if this is worth the splurge.

the library tab is usually dependent on your network speed, library size, and the machine its hosted on. Mines relatively small (about 20 movies0 and it loads pretty instantaneous.

Yep - but there have been improvements, and I've complained about the issues to Apple about the Library, and for me and my 100k size photo library and 30k size song library, it works fine now. Yes, still glitches when I update the Mac side but much easier to address and fix those issues now.

The design is fine. It’s a tiny black box, you never look at it, there’s not a problem with it, it works just fine. If they were to re-design it, all it would do would give them an excuse to increase the price even more.
According to software code, the new Apple TV is 120 Hz compatible, it just has to be enabled. I guarantee that Apple will enable it within the next couple years, once 120 Hz TV panels are much more widely in use

If it makes stuttering around the OS less noticeable or gone outright then that’d be nice. With HDMI 2.1 it’d also be nice to see 120fps 4K HDR content in iTunes, seeing as the few movies shot at that frame rate could only be seen in special theaters and definitely can’t be viewed on any current home media format. I wonder if this supports the new 120Hz Dolby Vision mode.
Trust me, you do NOT want to watch 120fps content. It looks like sh*t, and it's not because of the technology - our eyes just aren't built for it. There's a reason that high frame rate films never took off.

Dolby Vision is a BIG upgrade for those of us with compatible displays.
Not to mention Dolby Atmos for sound.
And Thread will be most welcome when it starts appearing in more smart home devices.
And the HFR might not pop up in many movies, but what about in games?

It should be cheaper first of all; it’s just a streaming box while most new TVs have built in Apple TV and Disney plus etc so what’s the real reason for it; they should make it more of a dongle type thing and way cheaper, I have the LG cx I never used Apple TV after that as it has it all built in

Question as a non-Apple TV user: will using an Apple TV bypass "smart tv" privacy concerns? I.e. will Samsung or Sony still be able to monetize/track our family's viewing, etc? Or does it essentially allow the TV to be dumb?
If you are concerned about your smart TV tracking your viewing habits, don't hook it up to the internet. If you use another streaming device like the ATV or Fire TV, just hook that box up to the internet. The only reason your TV would need to be hooked up to the internet would be for updates, or if you use it to directly stream TV shows. Thing is, you can pretty much expect streaming boxes of any make or model to track your viewing habits.

The last one has Dolby vision and was fine 30fps was good enough for tv shows and movies Dolby vision 60 isn’t needed

It looks different but that shouldn’t discount that it’s a creative intent that currently can’t be viewed in any way and Apple could be the first and potentially only place to offer it.

Mine is massive — about 500 movies and over 100 TV shows (which works out to several thousand individual episodes), and it loads pretty quickly even on my 2015 Apple TV HD. It's definitely more about the network connection than the Apple TV hardware, and it's worth noting that the 2021 Apple TV 4K will support Wi-Fi 6 plus a Gigabit Ethernet port which should improve things on that end even more.

Yes…my TV is completely disconnected from the internet, and the Apple TV handles everything.

There is a monitoring scenarios that's possible, but I'm hoping hasn't been implemented: where the TV finds an open wifi network and uses that as a back channel to the mothership.

Many areas of the country have been flloded with wifi from Xfinity/Comcast. That network is not protected, and there's nothing to say that Comcast and the major TV manufacturers haven't struck a deal to allow the transmission of TV data in that fashion. This would get around those pesky privacy-minded consumers that never attach ethernet or connect to their own wifi networks.

Same garbage reviewers..lol

Now’s your chance, people!

Put in the effort and make something of the kind that would please you - maybe there’s an audience?

Question for new ATV4K users - set-up: is it simply unplug the current ATV4K then plug and play the new one, or is there a first-boot option to import the current 'desktop' and apps most recently used by previous 4K ATV?

I wanted spatial audio for Air Pods Max. I doubt you will notice the 120hz because the lack of any real content (that I know of).
Not sure why Apple was in such a hurry to release an update this boring.
I'm in the demo that would buy this in a second but the processor on my Apple TV 4k is not a problem for me.

It's probably because Apple never really marketed it properly. I really enjoyed playing Fantasian even on my 2015 Apple TV HD (I skipped the 2017 one originally as I didn't have a 4K TV back then, and by 2019 I kept expecting a new one to be right around the corner). The biggest constraint for gaming seems to be the storage capacity.

Ultimately, however, I suspect this is an interim release. There are reports Apple is still working on something A14-powered that will likely be more gaming-focused, and could end up being an entirely different kind of set-top box, especially if the rumours that Apple is working on its own game controller are also true...
