Did you miss the literal 10 new features listed on the article?Apple have many a12 chips left over and they thought let’s just put it into an Apple TV and give it one new feature hfr
I think A13 would have been nic right in the middelKind of surprised by this as well. You can never have too much CPU/GPU for gaming so releasing something based on the A12 seems kind of odd. Cost must be a big factor in this decision.
Hopefully it gets audio passthru for true Dolby Atmos in Plex, and I can retire my shield tv
My question precisely. I already have two Apple TV 4Ks and without support for spatial audio on my AirPods Max, I'm not seeing any reason to upgrade.Any hint if the new AppleTV supports spatial audio on the AirPods Max?
I have a pretty light use of my AppleTV 4, just watching occasional TV channels or movies and shows. I don't have a 4K TV yet but maybe I'll get one in the future. So... I'm kinda divided if it's worth it to buy one or just keep my old AppleTV 4 and just buy the new remote...
Any thoughts ?
BummerNope, I just look at the Apple site end it says:
HE-AAC (V1), AAC (up to 320 Kbps), protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (up to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Apple Lossless, FLAC, AIFF, and WAV; AC-3 (Dolby Digital 5.1), E-AC-3 (Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound), and Dolby Atmos
Apple likely picked the A12 because it’s cheap and because it’s used in other products - namely the base iPad and Mini. The A13 will likely stop production when the iPhone 12S/13 is released in the fall and the regular 12 is relegated to to the lower cost option, thus discontinuing the 11. And the A14 is bleeding edge technology that is likely too expensive to manufacture for a $170-200 consumer electronic item. (I still wish they’d gone with the A14 though).I wish that was A14X or M1 on A12 is not much of a upgrade over the A10X I think A12X would have been better
Comparing iPhones on Geekbench, it looks like the A12 have better single core, roughly equal multi core, but worse metal performance than the A10x. Is this AppleTV going to be worse for gaming?Kind of surprised by this as well. You can never have too much CPU/GPU for gaming so releasing something based on the A12 seems kind of odd. Cost must be a big factor in this decision.
The ONLY thing I find to be a meaningful upgrade is the remote, but you can get that separately.Biggest thing is the new remote.
Thank god the old Siri remote is going away. The new remote looks great - keeps Siri and touch controls, but makes the touch not required for basic input. The iPod-like scroll wheel for track jogging looks like an amazing upgrade.
Will be buying a new remote for my current-gen 4K as soon as they're available.
I see what you did there! hahaha SOUNDS good ;-)I'm interested in the new ATV. I don't have a 4k set but the new remote working in conjunction with my home theater sound like a good option. Plus the Dolby features .
Well, Apple TV box aggregates all the apps together in a way for suggestions and what not, and you can run third party apps like Infuse. Plus, the interface is really slick. Is there any advantage to this new Apple TV over an Xbox series X or PS5 with apple tv app installed?
That iPod scroll wheel feature is awesome. The demo specifically mentioned that it can be used to quickly find a scene your looking for. Everytime I mention to someone why I prefer a certain devices over another because of something like this (Nvidia Shield with Plex is pretty fast with scanning through video timelines) everyone always looks at me like I've got three heads and then ask 'Why do you need to scan through movies so much?'. Jesus christ, the level of ignorance. Watch these same idiots now start celebrating this new feature.Biggest thing is the new remote.

The benefit is Apps. With the TV, you're stuck with what it ships with (most likely). With streaming, you never know what the next hot app might be that you can install to get that one special channel or game...Recently got a newer Samsung TV and it has AppleTV baked in, not really sure what the benefit is as newer TVs that support 4K HDR, HDMI 2.1 already have Netlifx, Amazon etc. built in. For older non-smart TVs I can see the appeal of an Apple TV but a FireStick Lite is $20.
Yep, I have the first 1080p ATV. Works great to this day but something faster will be appreciated. But the remote operating all my HT devices is very enticing. $179 is not much considering that basically less than the price of a Logitech HT remote.Don’t forget the new A12 CPU in it.
